painting a spoiler

ok i have a red spoiler on its way in the mail and a beige car, whats teh best way to spray it.  Is it worth trying it at home or should i take it to a paint and panel place? if so how much do u reckon they'd charge me?

do it yourself champ... you'd get charged a fortune at a panel shop

sand it back so the red paint is roughed up, but make sure its still smooth enough so it wont look dodgy when its painted.. paint it with a light coloured primer, like grey (most primers are grey anyway) then beige away.. too easy  ;D

If you do this yourself here`s a general rundown:

If it has any scratches etc in it which i bet it does sand these out with 240 wet and dry, if they are REALLY deep you might need to use 120 dry and then the 240 route to fix the problem.
Spray a very fine mist coat over the spoiler with black paint - This will be a guide for you while sanding the whole spoiler with 240 wet and dry after you have all scratches out etc
P.S. - Always use a block and not your fingers wherever possible

After you have sanded this back spray it over with a couple coats of spray putty and then another mist of black as guide.  Let cure for day or two in sun so it`s had time to shrink etc.
Sand this back with 600 wet and dry paper

Now apply your undercoat - Wait till dry and sand back with 1000 wet and dry
Allow 24 hours at least before sanding again though

Now you can paint the spoiler the same color as your car - Allow around 5 minutes between coats for flashing of paint.  Allow around 20 mins before applying clear if using it

Now let sit in sun for at least 48 hours for best results before rubbing this back with 1800 or 2000 wet and dry.  You only do this though if you intend buffing it (which is recommended if your after a really nice shine)
If you don`t have a buffing machine etc it might pay to take into shop and get them to buff for you as it is very easy to burn paint etc whilst doing this

if you intend doing it yourself get acrylic paint
you`ll also need thinners to mix into it as well

any auto paint store in your area will be able to help you out

Here's a few pointers....

* If the paint on the spoiler is in good nick, just rub it back with 800 and spray your colour over that.

* Only apply clear if you're using metalic paint.

* once finished, rub back your new paint with 2000 wet/dry paper, and treat it with a really good polish.

* If you haven't got a good compressor and gun, get it sprayed professionally. Don't bother with cans and shit like that.

i havent got a compressor and gun but i dont reallt want to get it done professionally as it doesnt have to look that good cos my paint job isnt in the best condition anyway. Thanks for the help tho  ;D

i'll just do it with cans i think. as long as it looks beige its all good

i got my spoiler today will probably paint it tomorrow or something, how do u know where to drill holes in the boot? Should i just estimate?

measure twice drill once champ.. you dont want a bootlid that looks like a sieve.

meausre the width of the bootlid, get the centre point, measure how far apart the bolts on the spoiler are, take half of that measuerment, and measure that on the bootlid from the centre point. this way, the spoiler is centred.

make sure its straight too.. you dont want a funky new spoiler that is mounted crooked.

if you use a pencil (as it can be rubbed off) mark where you want the spoiler to sit
now put some extra long screws in the spoiler so it sits up high enough to mark the boot where the longer screws come down and that`s where you drill the holes

now the condition of the spoiler is very good... no scratches at all a nice clean surface.
i'm wondering whats the technique or rubbing back paint.
how will i know if i'm doin it right?

If you've got sufficient coats of paint, rub it back until all the orange peel is gone. You can see by holding it up to a light source and looking along the surface of the spoiler.

ok what youll need is a sanding block and some water wet the sand paper wet the spoiler and start rubbing also have a hose on it constanly whilst sanding itd be better to go 400 then 600 as itll take more time to do it with 600 but youll get there and 600 is best for enamal paints 800 is acryllic youlll know when its time to stop as the primer will be exposed and you shoouldnt be getting orange peel texture if you do the paints to thick
