U12 -> U13 Brake Upgrade
« on: Aug 11, 2005, 12:10PM »
Hey guys - I'm looking very seriously at upgrading my calipers and rotors to U13 sized ones - not only do these have a much larger cross-sectional area than the U12 brakes front and rear, but having a greater diameter (and hence more leverage) they have a substantially better effective braking force. The caliper is also substantially larger at the front in U13's, giving it a larger and more evenly spread out brake force area.

This, in addition to U13 slotted rotors and greenstuff pads, should be a very good brake upgrade and at the same time be reasonably affordable. I will, however, have to upgrade my wheels before I can make this mod a reality.

Obviously I'll need to make sure it all fits first, so this weekend or next weekend I'll take one of the calipers from my brother's U13 and see if it fits on the Pintara's hub. If not then I'd have to change over the hub too which would be a lot more expensive.

Anyone considered or attempted this previously?

Both disc and caliper will bolt up no worries. Only problems you may possibly have is the caliper will not fit over the disc.
Most nissans have the same caliper bracket on the struts, the only difference is the distance from the hub changes on different models to suit larger or smaller discs.

I currently am running some 2 piston front calipers with 280mm discs that i had to machine down to 273mm to get the correct clearance from disc to caliper

What car did you get the calipers from Fraz? What rotors did you use?

i got the calipers and discs off a r33 2.5 non turbo. They are 4 stud also.
the rb20 r33 only has the same brakes as the u13 front

The u12 brake hose fits on as the caliper uses the same fitting and its in exactly the same spot.
Brake pedal feel is almost identical, its  a good upgrade, stopping power is not a massive increase, but i can lock my front wheels pretty easily with sticky 17's at speed. They also take longer to get hot and fade :)

i may be selling my u13 front brakes soon - import u13 attesa so twin piston sliding calipers. soon meaning possibly within the next few weeks.

they're certainly good brakes, but i got a real good deal on an upgrade so am going bigger.

They don't make greenstuff's for the back of our cars Rich.  Although Bendix Ultimates will do.

That doesn't surprise me...   ::)

I have Bendix Metal King on the back at the moment... might just wear them down first  ;)

Provided they don't wear the rotor first.

Had Metal Kings on the front of a Corolla, damn things ate the rotors way too fast.  Changed to some no-name brand that the brake place I know recommended, and was all good. Didn't notice any difference in stopping distance/effort.

Maybe Toyota rotors are made of softer iron <shrug>
209rwkW stock ... yes, it's a U12!!

My caliper seized on the rear of my old car with metal compound pads it managed to grind the disc down to approx 6mm from 12mm in a few weeks. The noise didn't sound like brakes either.

Metal Kings are too hard for most stock rotors.

Bendix from SuperCheap cost $39 front or rear and stop very well when the brakes are bled correctly ;-)

Are you sure you didn't leave your handbrake on? 6mm of wear in a few weeks is crazy.

does DBA or one of the other brake companies make rear slotted rotors for the u12?

Mine were on the min thickness about 12 months ago and I haven't measured them since. Maybe it's time to invest in some new ones!
