Turbo and intercooler
« on: Apr 19, 2004, 09:02PM »
hey all

i just want to gather a little info on getting my trx turbo'd.

my engine at the moment, is undergoing a complete overhaul (thanks a stray timing chain - yay!), and i thought i would find out how much and if its worthwhile to turbo the ka24 or just get the sr20det instead.

ive heard Noss and some others have turbo'd theirs, but unsure of the engine which they have used.

im budgeting about 4-5g's for it, which'll hope fully cover turbo, i'cooler( hopefully a larger one than off a 1jzgt),  injectors, ECU ,pipes, mainifold and other bits and pieces.

ive already had the exaust done - new extractors, hi flow cat, and  2.5in stainless steel piping

so, if anyone can help, wether it be just general, reputable place to get it done or watever, it would be greatly appriciated

cheers

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so f**king temperamental.

It's going to cost me $3k minimum to build my engine, and i am doing all the assembly/measurements etc. That is with forged pistons.
No one here has a KA24E turbo YET, but it's only a matter of time.
If you're getting a workshop to do it all, expect a bill of around $10k for it to be done properly. That is drive in, and drive out turbo.
I may be selling the manifolds/dump pipes/cooler piping i am fabricating for myself, noss and evenflow.
There is plenty more info around, use this button:

Well if you want to do the machining for $300 for me i'll send the block to you  ;D
- Looks like a minimum of $800 worth of machine work, including the heads, if not more if i need new valve stem guides
- budgeting $1k for pistons with rings and wrist pins
- using OEM nissan bearings, which at trade i can get for about $200 for the mains about the same price for the rod bearings (i don't remember exactly), so approx $400 there
- about $350 for all new timing gear (going on when i did my heads last year)
- $150 odd for a gasket kit (headgasket, valvestem seals etc), if you can get them cheaper let me know  ;D
- $200 on misc tools (mainly different size mics that i don't have yet)
- $150 odd for cryo treatment of rods/crank/cam etc

so minus the tools, i'm looking at over $2.5k for sure.
turbo is another matter, costing me minimum $1.5k

It all adds up  :-\

Stick_b: Try Charlie's motors in brisbane, one of the guys who owns the place (i think) has a killer U13 bluebird, this is his car:

And not to mention SIR_TRX went there to get nearly all his work done.

Yeah well im pritty lucky im doing it in a work shop wher atleast 4 v8 motors get done every week.

So i dont have to pay for machining and because they buy so many parts im getting my bearings and rings pritty muct next to nothing.

He a has every tool you could think of so dont have to worry about that plus ill be able to use the hoist so the rebild will be done in 3 days.

What rings/bearings/pistons are you going to be using out of interest?

Stick_b, if you are going the SR20DET route, speak to SIR_TRX (Glenn). He will be able to help you for sure as he lives in QLD too.
