Sorry, I guess I should have been more descriptive. It is a 1991 stanza/pintara.
I don't know why it is doing this I have put the old air filter box back on and it ran fine but when I put the cone on it has the crappy idle and sucks down gas like a 15 passenger van.

Just check the connector on the Air Mass Sensor, maybe u knocked it?

I just did all that and she still wants to die.Could  it be because I just have that temp sensor hanging out instead of having it in the air flow?

that could be a possible cause.. if you just leave that temp sensor hanging, it will be sensing the temps in the engine bay, not of the intake air, and as a result you car could go into limp mode and you will only be able to rev to 2500rpm or so.

does the maf adaptor that you have used have a rubber ring embedded in the side that it bolts up to the maf? if not it might be an idea to get some silicone and seal it, however i dont think that it would be causing a poor idle.

on the engine side of your air flow meter, check that you havent accidentally pulled it (the air flow meter) out of the intake piping when you were removing your stock air box..

well I thought about putting in the air flow or something but I'm afraid that the rubber seal on the sensor might be sucked up into the engine.

I had the same problem with mine when I first got the car and the position of the temp sensor does actually make a bit of difference, not just with idle but also fuel consump. would you believe! If you still have the little bit of bent black piping that runs from the crack between the front left light and the bonnet that goes to where the pod is then you will know what I am talking about..... I have just gotten my air temp sensor and extended the wire it is on so that it reaches INTO that bit of black piping where some of the intake air is coming in. I am attached it so that it is connected to the exit bit of the piping by shoving it in a small tight nook that is inbuilt into this pipe. Then the temp sensor is half in the pipe and half in the ambient engine air (because the pod sucks air from everywhere around it, not just the ram airflow coming through this bit of pipe)

I hope you understand that! But the long and the short of it is...you gotta get the temp sensor sensing the correct temp of the intake air and it will make a difference.

Another thing for you to try - jiggle the connection on the MAF sensor. Twice this has had a bad connection on my car and twice the car has idled like an absolute pig. Seeing as the MAF is what you install the pod onto, try it.

last night my car began to idle like crap, i'd been driving for about 20minutes and it had been fine.  it sounded like a v8 (almost) and it nearly stalled but didnt quite. so i pulled over and checked a few things... pulled out the air filter and put it back in and started it up and the engine ran fine.... there must be a loose connection to the maf sensor and i probably just knocked it back into place without realising.

my car is perfect on cold starts

i know its a sensor issue......but god knows im not very confident on opening the bonnet and jiggling around sensors.....maybe ill open the gregorys book and have a squzz......anyone else have any clues or experienced the same problem? only on cold it dosent hold the revs over 1200rpm like normal....just starts and drops to 850 like normal when the car should know what the temperature is......

My temperature sensor is woven into the pod filter....

I have made a bracket for my pod filter, and have screwed the air temp sensor directly onto the bracket. I would take a photo but I don't have a digicam at the moment.

Instead I've drawn a pull apart schematic in paint. It solves the problem of the air temp sensor. Hope you can all make sense of it ;D
