Overheating?? Mabye??
« on: Nov 17, 2003, 02:21PM »
Hey, Well on friday I drove all the way out to Boznia...For those of you who are not familular with Adelaide, It is out North in the sticks, about an hour away.
It was 31 degrees on Friday.. very hot and dry.

My car was fine all the way there and then we left about 2 hours later and drove about 5 Km's with no dramas. Then it stalled on me. It continued to stall everytime It went under 50 KM's

I mananged to keep the revs up a few times  but it stalled so quick it was hard to do anything...

Anyway, the temp was only at half way, and never went further.. Then got about half way home and noticed ALOT of black smoke pouring out the exhaust.. Pulled over and checked the engine bay, couldnt see anything that might be causing the problem so continued...

My ECU light them came on, stayed on for about 20 mins then went off again... it then came on and off whenever...

My car cooled down after driving at a constant speed.. but it didnt stop the black smoke pouring out or the stalling...

Anyone had this happen?? Or know what may be causing it??

By the way, It is regulary serviced and was serviced about 3 months ago, and I flushed the radiator completley and filled with nice new expensive coolant 2 months ago..

I have no idea what is wrong! HELP
Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?

WELL, my old ca20e had a changeover ECU fitted to it (reason unknown) and it used to have a habit of randomly just turning the car off, especially in warmer weather.

Happened one Christmas day when I was driving through a roundabout, and as we all know, no engine power, equals no power steering, equals, me drving onto the roundabout and ending up in the bushes.  Would happen when driving, when stopped at lights, whenever, adn no one could tell me why it was doing it.  When I got a powerchip fitted to it, the thing never did it again, weird.

So to answer your question, I don't know why your car is broken. 8)

Homer!  What have you done to the car?  I don't think it had broken axles before.

Before!  Before!  You're living in the past, Marge.  Quit living in the past.

What, I never said I didn't like it asshat! :P

At least I don't think I did... but if I did, then I'm the asshat.

black smoke is fuel related. Check the ecu for error codes, if the MAF is fucked it'll tell you.

You can find directions here:

I'm sure this information is also on Antrx.  :)

the maf doesnt particularly need to be either 100% ok or 100% stuffed. it could be playing up intermittently. not everything is as it is in the textbooks.

generally if the problem is something that is on again off again, then chances are it could be a wiring problem, so before you go replacing any parts, have an auto electrician check out the wiring to the maf.

some ecu codes are not stored. some are only stored if there is a permanant failure, but not if the problem is intermittent.

anyway, this is documented all over the internet for various models of nissan.. people have tried to replace plugs, leads, oxygen sensors (in the exhaust), fuel pumps, fuel filters, distributors, ecu's, new injectors, the works, one poor bugger spent over $5000 just to find out it was his maf in the end.

anyway, if you dont think its your maf, but you'd still like to check (especially if no ecu error codes are stored) find someone in antrx over there in adelaide with another ca20e and swap the maf sensors over for a day or something & see how your car goes. that way you can test it all out & then you will see if its your maf or not.

also, if you use the search button, or just browsed thru the faq section, there is a copy of exactly what is written in the nissan workshop manual regarding fault codes on the ca20e and the ka24e which have been posted for quite a few months prior to the other thread we have been told about so often in the last week.

ca20e fault codes & remedies as listed in the nissan workshop manual

ka24e fault codes & remedies as listed in the nissan workshop manual[url]

i'm aware that there are more error codes than this, especially for the ka24e, but these are the ones listed by nissan in the service manual. i have a further list of error codes & remedies for the problems, but once again it comes down to priorities, when people can get a listing of these & how to fix them for $30 in a gregory's manual, it doesnt put this high on my list of priorities.

also check your air temp sensor. these are common items to fail at this age, and their codes are rarely stored in the ecu

I've got a spare MAF... If u're not aware, u can do a 'burn off' test which will clean off all the shit on the element inside thhe MAF... Try that first.  Also the ones on the CA20E (same as R31 skylines) can are adjusted (although it's not mentioned in the book).

I didnt use the search button cos i didnt know i needed to search for the ECU (putting in disgnostic mode).. I asked a question wanting help, I did not know what was wrong... Thus why i asked before using the search button

And now i have read the thread.... i cannot put it in diagnostic mode...
i do not have a bridging tool...

its ok.. i want having a go at you. that whole paragraph wasnt even directed at you  ;D sorry if i made it sound like it was  :-\

you can just use a piece of wire as a bridging tool from memory. aussie_gli would know.

the 'brdiging' tool is just a piece of wire that you can put in the two terminals it says to bridge.

I'd like to let you know,

"thread digging" like you have done here isn't exactly the nicest thing to do on forums, escpecially when the thread was made back in 2003. That's a whole 4 years ago champion.

Don't let the opinions of the average man sway you. Dream, and he thinks you're crazy. Succeed, and he thinks you're lucky. Acquire wealth, and he thinks you're greedy. Pay no attention. He simply doesn't understand.

to be fair, it wouldn't be ANTRX if we stayed on topic.

and if someone wasn't cranky at Chr1s for something he said...
