Fast clicking sound above 4.5k
« on: Nov 23, 2007, 10:03PM »
I'll just give all the details in case any are relevant:

Had my car serviced on Monday (at K-Mart Tyre And Auto because my dad paid for it). Driven it pretty easily since then with just simple going down to the shops etc. Today I gave it a squirt for the first time since it was serviced, where the highway goes from 80 to 100 I put my foot in and kicked down to 3rd, revved to about 4,000 rpm before letting off. Everything was fine.

A few minutes later in the same situation I put my foot in all the way, kicked down to 2nd and there was a very fast and moderately loud ticking/clicking sound from 4,500 rpm up to 6,000 rpm where I lifted. I repeated this a few minutes later with the same result. The sound seems as if it's coming from the direction of the speedo but about 1 metre from me.

Any ideas what this could be? Timing chain? (My car has just over 100,000 km on the odo.)

check the oil mate. Sounds like they didn't fill it properly. You check the oil either when the car hasnt' been started (cold) or 5-10 minutes after driving.  ;) Also if your aircon was running I wouldn't be suprised if it was belt related, which is more of a relief than oil missing.

Air con wasn't running at the time, although it had been about 10 minutes earlier. I'll check the oil now.

EDIT: The oil is past the "full" mark (the highest part of the shaded section) on the dipstick. It's all the way up to to the kink in the metal. (and yes I checked it properly, taking it out, wiping it, then putting back in and taking it out again.)

mine did the same thing but that was the lifters making that noise, if you open the hood can you hear a constant ticking or just when your driving.

cheack the oil level. it might not be filled up enough so when you boot it the oil is going away from the lifters causing them to tick. i just filled mine up a bit and it went away after a while.

During normal driving I can't hear any ticking. Haven't listened to it with the bonnet open yet.

The ticking comes in very suddenly when I hit 4,500 rpm.

I gave it another squirt today and couldn't hear anything.

When it did make the noise, it would come in suddenly at about 4.5k and then stop as soon as I took my foot off the gas at about 6k. When the revs were dropping but still above 4.5k there was no noise. Only under hard acceleration.

I suppose I'll get one of you guys to look at it on the next cruise.  :P
