I'll just give all the details in case any are relevant:
Had my car serviced on Monday (at K-Mart Tyre And Auto because my dad paid for it). Driven it pretty easily since then with just simple going down to the shops etc. Today I gave it a squirt for the first time since it was serviced, where the highway goes from 80 to 100 I put my foot in and kicked down to 3rd, revved to about 4,000 rpm before letting off. Everything was fine.
A few minutes later in the same situation I put my foot in all the way, kicked down to 2nd and there was a very fast and moderately loud ticking/clicking sound from 4,500 rpm up to 6,000 rpm where I lifted. I repeated this a few minutes later with the same result. The sound seems as if it's coming from the direction of the speedo but about 1 metre from me.
Any ideas what this could be? Timing chain? (My car has just over 100,000 km on the odo.)
