U12 broken timing chain
« on: Sep 3, 2007, 11:11PM »
Hi my son is looking at buying a u12 Pintara that is not running. Owner says timing chain is broken. Is it likely to have stuffed anything when it broken? Is it an easy replacement or is he better off doing an engine swap? How much would a secondhand motor cost and where is the best place around Melbourne to source either an engine or the repair bits? Cheers Steve.

Definatly replace the engine, when the chain snapped it could have done all sorts of damage. Bent valves etc..much safer with a new engine.

My timing chain broke. It cost me $1800 to get fixed, I was obviously ripped off. Depending on whether you know people (cheaper rates on engine repair) you might be better off getting a 2nd hand engine (in good condition, warranty etc).

Six months after my engine was fixed, it died again, so I got a second hand engine for $1100 incl. labour. I was quoted between $800-$3000. Engine is still running fine after a year. I'm unsure on places in Melbourne (I'm from SA) but the YellowPages will always be your friend with things like this.

I'm sure to replace the timing chain the engine has to be removed or atleast lifted, not a fun job.

Hope this helped. Welcome to antrx.com, plenty of useful info!

If you can get it really cheap and its in good nick buy it. Pull the head and rebuild the head. Replace chain, etc.
Your car may be able to go faster.
But I can go any where. except into a garage, underground carpark, bridge...
