Odometer Problems
« on: Aug 27, 2007, 11:37PM »
Hey guys my odometer doesnt work at all, hasnt for a year or so. My uncle helped me remove the dash cluster etc and saw that the cog was worn.

I replaced it with a new cog I bought and we reinstalled it back in the car.

Took it for a spin and saw that the neither the odometer or the trip meter moved.

We removed it again and checked again and saw a bit of the old cogs rubber was in the motor area. We cleaned it and checked and rechecked and reinstalled it but still doesnt work.

My uncle (who is a awesome mechanic :) ) Told me it could possibly be because the it has been run in awhile the sensor or electrical component could be lazy or faulty as the cogs do spin correctly.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice... do drive it for a week or so and see if the lazy sensors works or do I have to buy another odometer ( I think most wreckers will make me buy the whole instrument display). Cheers guys.
Ill fight you. May even throw a bar of soap your way. Maybe a few wax strips and some clip on brembo brake calipers for your fooly sic civic.

He's tried a new gear.

The only thing I can suggest is to recheck that the motor and gears all mesh together properly, if that's ok then I'd say there's a problem with the motor.

Lo and behold went on a cruise on the M1 from Brisbane to Gold Coast and as I was merging I dropped it into 3rd gear than gunned it for a few seconds.

After doing this the odometer started working all of a sudden... yay. :D

AFter a day out and coming and having done about 161km when I gunned it at a set of lights the odometer stopped working.

I think (from a noobie perspective) that the cogs are working and that there is something wrong with the speed sensor/plugs. Does anyone think this as well?

Its bed time now as I had a long day but tmw gonna check the plugs for it. Dont know where it is tho, just looked at the corsair manual and it looks like its at the bottom left of the engine if looking from the front of the car. Is this right? Cheers guys.

Thrashing cars to fix it is the same as "the old hit it to fix it technique ay chief" (in Maxwell Smart's voice) lol.

Well took out the dash again and took out the speedo. The new cog is fine (tho its become soft) then noticed that the gear it is sitting on has another cog behind it which links the odometer and the travel meter.

I noticed it was actually broken off and that some of the teeth were stuck so cleaned it out.

When to an instrument supplier who said they cant sell to public unless its sold to an agent or they install it and to leave it with them.

Had a voicemessage left on the phone which basically said that the circuitry was stuffed and that it be too expensive and to go to a wrecker to buy another dash.

What was interesting was that when I gave them the cluster I had purposley left a screw loose and this same screw was still loose when I got it back which looked like they hadnt even opened it!!!

I range Able instruments who have the right gear I need so will be picking it up tmw and it should be okay now.

2 questions tho, the plastic cog I had put has come soft (prob cuz of the heat) is that normal?

And secondly ima paint the black part of the instrument cluster, what kind of paint should I use, I kinda tried the wrong acrylic type without testing meaning a bubbly wont dry paint on the cluster... when I washed it off it kinda looks like marble....hmmm.... an upper class TI Pintara with marble cluster ;D

Lol are we referring to odometer cogs now or you???  ;D

Anyways I got the right part it was a large gear I got from Able Instruments in Loganholme and the odometer works sweet now.

If anyone is interested the large gear which connects the trip meter, odometer to the small cog which connects to the motor, the part number from Able is 4350 Large Odometer Gear.

Btw it aint cheap for the small bastard.... $22!!!
