Cross member mounts
« on: Aug 19, 2007, 07:49PM »
hey all, about 2 years ago i mounted a kerb head on while doing about 120km/h OUCH. after repairing the cracked sump and bent control arms i noted that the section of chasis where the rear bolts of the cross member mount to the body had been damaged, it was cracked and slightly shifted. about 6 months ago it finally gave out, a small piece of body containing the captive nuts had broken away from the body leaving the engine hanging by only 2 bolts at the front. i had the piece rewelded into place, but it gave out again. I thought I had to bite the bullet and get it repaired properly so i had my engineer attack it. He removed the piece, shaped it up again and it now has 2 more reinforcing points than standard. When he got the old pieces out while it was opened up he noted that the entire mount had never actually been welded into place, there are 2 'arms' that go straight up against the firewall.

(its my life story lol)

Has anyone else had this problem at all, or was my case just a one of a kind??
lol Phantom and I at the wreckers

i had a bastard of a time with my rear crossmember bolts. I cross threaded them and battled for ages to get bolts of different sizes to stay in, I tried helicoils and failed. The end solution was to fill the holes up with weld and drill and tap a whole new thread, as far as I know my cars new owner has had no trouble, and neither did I.  8)
