Pintara Ti Auto issues

Hi all, i am working on my gf's auto Ti atm. We bought it for $500 paid RACQ $154 for CTP and got a RWC for $85. The place passed it in around 30 mins. He told me the suspension, brakes including master cylinder, steering, cv's and electricals were all in good condition or near new with brand new 14" Michelin tyres on stock Ti alloys. Nothing to fix  . The previous owner told me it had passed RWC approx. 3 months earlier when it was transferred into her name.

The interior is immaculate, Cruise control works a treat  and has aftermarket extractors fitted, yet to work out what brand they are though. Body work is a little rough with a few minor shopping trolley dings and scrapes.





Problems so far are when its slowing down the gearbox and/or motor seems to rumble and shudder when slowing down from 2000 down to a low 700rpm idle. Once on throttle over 2000rpm it smooths out and runs very smoothly and quietly. I have checked the transmission level and added about 1/2 a litre of dex3 atf. The up and downshifts are quite smooth now right level on dipstick also. I changed the spark plugs and got it a lot better but its still idling to low.

I believe that the motor may be causing the problems as it shudders and idles roughly in Park and Neuitral. I will be performing the self diagnosis mode to see what faults it has. Originally when we got it the fans were starting up straight away hinting the water temp sensor wasn't connected properly wiggling the plug at the RWC place and the fans switched off.

As soon as I can afford I will be fitting new distributor cap leads and rotor to it.  Tomorrow I will be cleaning all the connectors with CO contact cleaner and checking the injectors for internal and external leaks as it is using a fair bit of fuel and it wouldn't start after it came back from its road test until I cleaned the cap rotor and checked the air filter. When it started it ran roughly for a little while then smoothed out.

Anyone who has had these problems also any possible ideas on what's causing all the dramas as I'm not familiar with the KA24E maintenance issues apart from a week of intensive antrx thread reading. It is also the first Auto that I've driven for years and the only other auto i've worked on was an auto magna with carby and kickdown cables.

hey mate, id say raise youre idling speed to around 950 to stop the shuddering. Mine used to idle at around 700 rpm and with the aircon on it used to shudder when the revs were dropping.


If you dont already know, the idle screw (If you are standing at the front of youre car with the bonnet up) is on the left hand side of the plenum on that thing with all the hoses sticking out of it called the AAC valve. Its a little plastic screw try adjusting that and see if it helps the shuddering problem.

as for the fuel economy id say deffinately change the thermostat, they seem to have a tendancy for getting stuck open and wasting fuel. numerous members will tell you that it makes a huge difference for a $30 item

check your engine mounts.  mine shuddered badly aat idle.  changed mounts and is now super smooth.  be prepared to pay $250 for the set of three.   i did mine one by one and the one that made the most difference was the irst i did and that was driver side at the front top of the motor.

Thanks guys. I bumped the idle up using the throttle body adjuster as the AAC adjuster did squat I will check this one also but its made a huge difference but the grille and bumper bar are vibrating and causing most of the noise. Leaning on the bumper stops the vibration but I'll pull the Corsair engine mount to see if this is part of the problem. The motor is running much better now with new spark plugs.

Cap and rotor are pretty much stuffed so will find out how much they will cost at work tomorrow.

Also need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket and put new head studs in. Seems when the extractors were fitted half the studs must have backed out and been replaced with bolts instead. Also can hear a small exhaust at the extractors to head gasket.

Thanks mate, looked at the right hand engine mount and it looks a little perished. Checked underneath the engine and found it rests on the crossmember. As mentioned in my Project CA20E to KA24E I will be getting solid rubber Magna mounts custom fitted to the stock mounts for the Ti to keep the auto cushy

As stated the engine mount's are probably stuffed. The first thing I would be doing is having the auto box serviced. It might have been done over 100 000km's ago or if ever. I dare say that the transmission filter in the box is probably full of crap from over the years. That is probably one of the reasons the transmission doesn't shift smoothly.

When I test drove it it didn't change gears smoothly and seemed a little lost. I added fluid and switched off the overdrive  first auto i've ever owned. It's actually really quick in power mode.

I'm getting the service kit through work along with new transaxle seals and will get a specialist auto place in Brisbane my family use to adjust the belts and check everything out.

I've just sourced engine mount prices from Repco:

MT8619 Engine Mount Right hand manual/auto $191.99
MT9663 Engine Mount Left Hand auto $ 152.99
MT8593 Engine Mount Rear manual/auto $69.99

I don't understand why the rear mount the most complex one is the cheapest but hey who's arguing. I'm going to do all 3 mounts in the Ti. The rear from Repco and the other mounts replaced with tougher solid filled rubber mounts looking at around $210 all up.

There aren't any belts in autos, only bands

shop around you should be a ble to get the mounts cheaper than that.  i got mine in south australia from the parts boys and were $50, $100 and $140.  that was about a year ago.  good luck.  its an easy job to do.

I sourced the right hand mount cheaper  replaced it and found all the noise has gone away. I bought the rear one also and fitted it to a new crossmember I am fitting tomorrow. The old one had bottomed out bending it out of shape.
