What oils and filters do YOU use?
« on: Feb 25, 2007, 06:04PM »
Howdy all,

Thought I'd throw this out there and ask what everyone's preferences are to oils and filters (air/fuel/oil, etc)

Personally, I use a combo of Castrol GTX3 and Moreys Upper Cylinder Lubricant with a genuine Nissan oil filter

Air filter wise, not a great deal of choice for OE panel filters; looking to replace with a Pod style setup, when my old filter is due to be replaced..

Looking forward to hear what your preferences are..

Dan  :-\

With semi-synthetic or fully synthetic oils, its not adviseable to use in a higher mileage vehicle because it gets past the rings and out the pipe correct? Would this be somewhat improved by a fortifier such as Moreys?

due to my timing chain/lifter noise I use a whole 1l bottle of moreys oil stabiliser and the rest of the fill is valvoline 5w30 full synthetic. combined with usually a valvoline or purolator oil filter does the trick.

I was using valvoline panels for a long time, I've now picked up a k&n pod and its a good improvement.

Oil 20w50 semi cheap (not 6 dollar Supercheap)

Filters Ryco (I know what part numbers etc.) Occasionally I use a Purolator filter, but I change my oil every 5000 km anyway.
I'm so far behind at work, I'm almost retro!

I hope you're not using the Moreys upper cylinder lubricant in with your oil dude....
Upper cylinder lube is supposed to be mixed with your fuel. It's usually used on cars that run LPG, to lubricate the valves and stop them from burning out.

I use on my rebuilt engine:

Nulon or pennzoil 15w-40. Not full synthetic.

Oil filter generally is valvoline.

Air filter is can't remember. Soon it will be a k&n panel filter.

Probobably not the best oils/filters but it does the job very well and dosn't cost a fortune every service.

My engine is a CA20, about 270,000km new (:P), and had a hard life for the last 50,000km.

I use a K&N panel filter, Ryco Z145A oil filter and Fuchs 20w-50 mineral oil.

My car smokes under hard acceleration, but I think that's the valve stem seals. I haven't bothered to fix it because it doesn't consume too much oil. Probably a litre every 4000km, by then it's almost time for another oil change.

Mine is well overdue for an oil change (my odometer has been non operational since mid december, and just fixed it today, I estimate its been about 6000ks between then and now) so about 7-8k since the last change.

Finally got my clutch done today (Exedy Sports Tuff), forgot how a new clutch feels  ;D

Sorry to sound stupid but,

What are the advantages of thinner/thicker oil.

I probably will go a thinner oil eventually. But for now it will do.
What would you guys reccomend considering my car is  stock engine wise.

it just puts a little less stress on the engine and shit, allows it to spin easier..

since u would have a tight engine, your clearances would be right, so the oil wouldn't seep through and burn off...I could run 0-30 without burning any oil, but meh, its abit too thin lol, with 10-30, it runs good.

How many km you done on it now ? Have you noticed the difference in power as it loosened up, the way the powerband opens up is weird lol, it just starts to pull harder and harder everytime you give it a squirt, then it just stops at one.

I use genuine Nissan oil and filter. They are the same price as Magnatec and valvoline oil filter.
20W/50. 280 000km's on the motor. It doesn't burn oil. Still going strong.

Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
Your car may be able to go faster.
But I can go any where. except into a garage, underground carpark, bridge...

2 sticks and manual locking hubs. have to get out to drive it around
Good old Nissan.

KA's are the shit. According to all the info on the site, they are better then sliced bread and thats saying something.

Done about 3000 kms now. It has loosened up heaps. Pulls way harder now even though it is stock. Makes me wish I had chucked in a few performance parts. Anyway at least I have a good base for future mods.

On a unrelated note I just got pedders sportsryder springs and velocity responsive dampning shocks. Lowered an inch and a bit all the way round.

Just changed my oil/filter today and used a combo of Valvoline XLD Engine Armour and Moreys Oil Stabiliser (2.5:1 ratio) and used the trusty Valvoline oil filter.. forgot how much of a shit it is to try to get the filter off (harder that my old Falcon anyway, but not as difficult as my old 3S-FE Corona import..)
Anyhow, its good till at least 138,000km now :D
