Author Topic: Auxiliary Air Control (A.A.C.) Valve problem (Read 6928 times)

I have had a really bad idle ever since i have had my car (almost 12 months) and its always been bad. Accualy about 4 months ago it idled normal at cold start (1300rpm) and i thought there was somthing wrong. Anyway its getting worse lately. At cold start it will just die in the ass. It will just start (it has never stalled) and it will just sit around 550-600rpm then i can rev it and it will go up and back down to 600 then shutter and go back up to 700 then straight back down to 500-600 and it will idle rough. I have ajusted the idle ajustment/screw and the idle once it does normalise it sits at 1000rpm now so that wasnt it.

I red up on here and on the fsm that the Auxiliary Air Control (A.A.C.) Valve is what adjusts the idle when under load and this sounds like mine isnt working. My question is where is it and how can i clean it/ check to see if its broken and get a new 1?

Also forgot to add that my idle drops even more when i turn the stearing wheel (power stearing).

thats a perfectly normal function as your are putting a load on the engine.

brake pedal will do the same thing.

i had the same problem, i tried pulling it apart and cleaning it. to no avail

i went to the wreckers and got one for 10 bucks, it fixed the problem right up.

I red that the AAC lets in more air when u put the car under load and increases the idle to counter the load.

well yer, if you move the wheel when its idle the revs will drop momentarily then the aac will copmensate. if yours isn't doing that then I think you were spot on with your fault finding.

no mine doesnt compensate. it just drops and shutters, then when i put it back in the middle it go's back up.

on a 15yo car Its probably a good idea to replace shit like that.

You said, "Cleaning the throttle body" is that the same as the ACC?

Ok now that we have astablished that this is the problem, my next question where is the valve and how/where do i fix/get it from

ash, when the engine is idling, it's not under load.

the AAC/IAC valves do control idle speed.

the AAC is the cluster on the left of your plenum. it does have something to do with idle speed, its got the idle adjuster on it. rip it off and give it a good clean and check it. mine was wedged open which gave me a high idle rather than a low one, but its a thought

The Idle Air Adjusting unit (IAA or IAC ) is circled in red - its the round bronze coloured thingo.
The Auxiliary Air Control valve (AAC) is cirled in green

Also, I highly reccommend that you download the Factory Service Manual

Have the manual and have been reading it alot over the last 2 days, thats how i thought of the AAC valve. The Drawn picture that i was looking at basicly was an arrow pointing to the back of the engine, not much to go off. THanx for the pic tas + Karma. Sorry for my idiocy

Nope i didnt. Funny u should say somthing today As i decided to pull off my rubber hose and sprey heeps of crc cleaner in there and leave it over night to see if it helps remove the gunck and shit. Dont no if it will work or wheather it will blow up my car or not but it was worth a try. Tell u tomorrow if it works or not. If not i plan on getting jono or some1 else to help me pull my intake off and clean it all out.

I will see if that fixes it and reply here.

yeah ok thanks, does youre problem sound similar to this?

cold engine = 500 rpm even stalls in winter

engine after a minute of driving = perfect idling speed

not the worst problem ever just annoying that it doesnt idle at 1500 on cold like most other cars.

Yep thats what mine is. Mine did idle perfectly when i got it but it got worse. Question. Do u have a shitty pod on ur car? Or had a shitty pod on it for a long time, cuz i think chris descovered our problem in his project thread

Did you guys read this? Milford said that cleaning it didn't work for him so he went and bought a replacement which FIXED the problem.
