After seeing Chucky's spray job, my friend and I have been thinking of redoing his whole interior. He is the unfortunate owner of the brown interior on his corsair, needless to say it looks crap. We are considering taking off the whole dash, door panels etc. and spraying them black to make a black interior. We will replace the door trim with proper black vinyl (inspiration from Gli and his blue vinyl) and simply spray the rest. My mate has an air compressor so we can spray it properly. Question being, will it work ? He wants to do basically every single piece of brown vinyl or dash in the car. I told him he is better off in just making selected bits black and maybe some silver in there so he'd have black, brown and silver. What do you all think ?

black brown and silver is actually not that bad of a combination.

however

if it were me, i  would be going with just black and silver.
what color is his car? because black with the wrong color can look crapola :)
i would be going for the majority of bits being black. maybe make anything that is vinyl into black. then get an alternativ color, like a slate gray (a dark gray with a little dark blue in it) and use that as a secondary color, for say, most of the stuff you want to actually paint. then, use a dull metallic silver for the highlights, so maybe switches and dials and stuff. lastly, make sure you get a new black steering wheel ;)
and seats too
and carpet
etc
etc
heheheh
just amke sure you have the right type of paint before you start doing major work. otherwise it will look worse than the brown in the first place   ::)

The colour is what I like to refer to as "corsair cream". Its not quite white and not quite custard but somewhere in between with the brown interior *gags*.
Yeah cool idea mate, so for the dash Im thinking paint is the best option (same with most things in there). So maybe do that (the dash and console etc.) in the bluey/grey, the door trim black and the surrounds of the gear stick black, black stearing wheel and chrome silver dials and frames around the locks and window winders etc. What type of paint would be the go I wonder ? If the proper planning and time is taken, it could be a very cheap and yet very effective project dont ya think ?

absolutely!!

you would want a paint that adheres to, and dries evenly on, the vinyl and plastic surfaces. if you get some you think might do the job, it'd be well worth getting some bits and pieces froma wreckers or something to experiment on. you might need to prime the surface in the first place....

i know the color you're talking about... not the most attractive around, granted..... howeveer sometime down the track you could sand it all  back yourselves and do a white paint job.... surprisingly not too hard to do!! a friend did it on his old corolla, took 2 people one weekend for the bulk of the work. the sanding is the hardest bit (physically).

once you get all that going, you'll have a pimpin' machine to fear!!!  ;D

im good for something! honest, i am hehehehehehe

word of advice, prep your surfaces properly..... give yourself heaps of time to let it dry and dont touch it coz fingerprints are a fucking BITCH to get rid of. sanding, painting, etc etc etc, save yourself the hassle and let it all dry overnight, but yer, make sure u post some pics when your done....

good luck champ

My mates decided we are doing his interior gloss black ( we have an air compressor so we can use real auto paint for the interior) with the chequer board steel stuff (the steel stuff that looks like it has the SBS sign in it) in the doors. We are also pop-rivetting it into the floor instead of floor mats. It will look sweet ! How the hell do you get the dash out ?! And those bits that are on the sides of all the windows, on the interior.  The bits that are on the sides of the windows that go up to the roof. We are going to replace all the carpet with moulded black carpet aswell. What do you think ?

If you can't be bothered taking it all out to put gloss paint on, one idea is to use a liquid cut & polish on it as you would with the exterior paintwork. I've done this with my mirrors and it transforms them from being dull, off colour and just totally lacking in anything vibrant, to a really nice, shiny look (but still the wrong colour ;D) haha give it a try man!! Since black absorbs the most sun, you'll want to do this anyway, or your dash is going to go a funny frosty grey colour and will crack up worse than my stepdad when my brother uses the internet too long. ;)

to get the dash off u have to take just about everything else out as well, its pretty simple when u look at it and most of the screws are the same size so it doesnt matter if u put a different one in a different hole or whatever when u put it back together.

yeh sounds like it'll look sweet make sure u post sum pics

have u got a quote on the carpet yet? i got quoted 550 if u get anything better than that let me know  ;)

i cant quite see how ure gunna get that checker plate stuff on the doors...

oh by the way , blakeyboyr DO NOT  poprivet the checker plate to the floor , you will get so many vibtrations, road noise , engine noise , exhuast noise that you will go deaf ,
most cars have alomst an inch of insultion under the car , i would recomend glueing insultion to the floor then glueing ( liqid nails or sumthing simular ) the checker plate to this insultion , that should elimate alot of noise and also save drilling dangerous hous in the car underbody
maybe you could use brackets to join sheets , angles or curves, i think you might underestimate this  interior modification.
another idea is to purchase that fake plastic checker plate ,, alot cheaper and easier to work with , might look abit tacky though

For that to work we'd have to cut holes out of the carpet for the chequer board instead of just rivetting it on top of the carpet .... Hmmmm. Thanks for the warning though man, its not up to me, its up to the owner but I will make sure he reads what youve just written  ;)

Not to mention, the real stuff is going to be adding weight.  I dunno how much it would weigh, but i'm guessing more than a set of speakers for example...

I think we have decided to use the fake roll chequer board for the doors and the real metal stuff for the floor instead of floor mats. Its $10/kilo and they cut it to size for you. We figured if we used the fake stuff on the floor all the feet etc. would destroy the finish on it leaving it dull and crap basically. We thought the real aluminium/steel stuff would be tougher and take the punishment better.  As for fastening it to the carpet ? I thought maybe velcro so we can replace it if need be. But It shouldnt need replacing so maybe just pop rivets it over the top of the carpet ? That way the carpet and insulation under it would act as a sound deadener
