I just finished making up a custom gearshift boot as the factory one is bloody ugly and I couldn't find a decent one in the shops that wasn't ridiculously priced.
excuse the poor quality picture, something wrong with my camera

I also retrimmed the lid of my centre console bin. The blue is a bit darker than it is in the picture

anyone interested in a little "How to" article or want me to make you a boot

Next you'll be asking me about my knob...

nah, I'm going to either buy a cheap short shifter off ebay or cut mine up and make it into a proper short shifter, there's no point just chopping a bit off the top.

I'll do a DIY when I can, it's piss easy. You just need two bits of material cut to the desired shape and then you reverse sew them (either with a machine or handsewn) together,

then sew(has to be hand sewn) the bottom of the material into the original plate that the factory boot mounts on, then you put the little black trim (thats hidden under the stock boot) over the top of the stitches.

I'll probably make up a template to put on the net to make it easy for people
You can use any material, leather would be best but I used the vinyl (fake leather look) that I had left over from my door trims.

you could also use 4 triangle pieces which would give a more even shape

cutting the stick is pointless, it just makes it harder to shift as you have less leverage. you need to increase the length of the shifter below the pivot point to give a shorter shift. my shifter is currently around 4-5" longer below the pivot point, but thats a little too long.. i'm going to reduce it to 2" when i get the time

yeah I was going to do that, but I kind of like the uneven look, I might do a 4 piece one though. I've got plenty of scrap material.

BMW's have two piece boots so it's good enough for me

yea looks aiite man,
i was thinking of doin the same thing about three weeks ago when i done my doors in red vynil trim. my doors look madness, much like yours do. with my left over vinyl i attemapted to make one of those rear parcel shelves out of mdf and cover it with the red vynil but it didnt turn out, im to uncoordinated to make one of those (instead i jus made real dodgy spacers for my 6x9') i think ill go and pull my gear boot of and have a look at making one of those custom gear shift boots, it looks pretty trick and would be alot more cheapr then buyin an aftermarket one

got another pic that isn't all pixelated now...but photobucket decided to make the picture small

the reason it's all baggy and doesn't sit perfectly is because I wanted to leave some extra material there so when I fit or make a short shifter I can just pull the whole boot down, cut off the excess at the bottom and sew it into the frame without having to make another one.

same knob except mines a black one, did you have trouble getting the [i seem to suffer from tourettes] on? i had to screw the clamping screws straight into the metal, i couldnt fit the rubber over the stick

yea i couldnt fit the rubber over either i tried cutting it and still wouldnt fit so i just screwed it on and now with no rubber it rattles at high RPM but its still fastened

Hey all the trimming you did looks fantastic! I just had my gear-boot retrimmed with a nice black vinyl. I've been thinking about retrimming the door panels myself for sometime now, ever since I worked out how to take the panels off. Could you do a quick dot point step by step write up of how you retrimmed your door panels? Would really really appreciate it.

Thanks, but I got really sick of the blue, far too "look at me" for me now.. I'm slowly changing it all over to black and grey (2 thirds black and one third grey on the doors) grey centre console lid and I still havent decided if I want a black or a grey shift boot...

That probably sounds dull, but it is starting to look quite classy

Oh and I'm also making totally new door pods that will incorporate a map pocket like the stock trims.

The above is for if you just want to change the top part of the trim and retain the original vinyl at the bottom... IF you want to change the whole lot then it's even simpler.

Oh and I don't recommend using contact cement... the best stuff to use is spray on contact adhesive. Also you should put some thin foam underlay or thin wadding under the vinyl for best results.

**A staple gun is a must to get the job done properly, you can get OK ones from bunnings for around $20**

I'll probably do a proper DIY when I get around to finishing off my door trims, but no promises.

Im not liking my gear cover and knob anymore also my steering wheel i want to change it over to something more simple
