what gearbox fits KA24E?
« on: Oct 20, 2004, 10:23AM »
as some of you might've known, the tranny on my KA24 is done for (synchro + bearings problem).
So, I'm wondering if CA20E tranny is direct bolt on to the KA24, since I can get a much better deal on it than the KA24 tranny.

pictures of the CA20 tranny can be found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7928554846&fromMakeTrack=true
BTW, I'm not getting the tranny on Ebay, I'm just using the link above for picture reference.

but I'm having doubts whether or not this is a CA20 tranny since if memory serves me right, the CA20 runs cable operated clutch and the KA24 got the hydraulic operated clutch...
As far as strength goes, I understand it won't be as strong as a KA24 unit would be, but if it fits it works for me since I'm not going all out in the engine department with my KA24 either.

The other tranny I'm considering is the VG30E U11 maxima tranny (same number as KA24 tranny). Many of them can be had for lower kilometres than the KA24. Only thing bothers me is if the input shaft were of the same diameter.

The new tranny will be "loaner"; in the long run, the plan is to rebuild the KA24 box with straight cut gears, thus eliminating the synchros and other weakling components, not to mention trimming excess weight off the tranny internals.

And if I'm so lucky, shorter gearings as well..

Unless you machine an adapter plate up, the CA and VG trannys will have different bell housing bolt patterns.

hmm... I didn't expect having to machine an adapter plate since the U11 VG30E got a RS5F50A tranny...as does the VG30DE J30 max, KA24E U12, and KA24DE U13.

Yes, they are the same transmission, even the SR20 uses this tranny (i think), but use different bellhousings.

The tranny from a ca20 u12 will bolt to a vg20e/vg30e but not a ka24
you can get out of a ukrainian prison for 2 packs of marlbro and a bottle of vodka....

I think it's quite a task, the spare RS5F50V (lsd) tranny i have here has the bell housing integrated to the rest of the box housing, so to swap them would be a tedious cut n weld job. It would be nice if it was as simple as swapping all the goodies from one box to the other.
