Custom interior? how hard and how much?
« on: Jul 28, 2004, 02:20AM »
i was thinking in the future(hopefully not so distant) i wanted to get a pair of your good old racing type seats in a blue and silver colour and also getting rear seats recovered in same colour. Ive seen Sir_trx's fully sick interior and was wondering how expensive it is to redo the dashbourd, roof lining well basically the rest of the interior that needs to be done for it to look good?

That all depends on what you want to use as a material and whether you'll be doing the work yourself. It is time consuming and requires a lot of patience but all in all is an easy job. Vinyl is a good material for door trims and the roof, but for the dash you may want to look into vinyl spray due to the sheer difficulty in redoing the dash. Ill post up detailed costs of vinyl etc. when I do a writeup on interiors (soonish, maybe on the weekend but dont hold your breath)

Expect to pay about $15/m of 1.4m wide vinyl, from vyfab in moorabbin (im assuming you're a melburnian as i cand be stuffed to check profile). Other dealers elsewhere should have similar prices.

If you do the seats, Id be interested to know how much they set you back as i want to do this sometime in the future.

If you want an interior like SIR_TRX's, he paid $2750. It cost him a bit more cos he supplied racing bucket seats to get trimmed and fitted which took twice as long. Before that it was gonna cost $2200 with standard seats.

This included getting roof done and dash, pillars and most plastic bits properly painted with plastic primer as base. He got his carpet dyied black as no place makes a moulded carpet for them. All seats were double stitched so it looks like leather.

Hope you dont mind me saying that Glenn.

Andy.

it cost me $500, did all the work myself and that incl a autotechnica steering wheel with boss kit. this incl roof lining, dash, all doors, all plastics (brown to black) and custom 16mm mdf parcel tray with "/////Alpine" embossed on it. it was a basic sorta thing considering i have had some basic background work in this sorta stuff... but the dash would have been the hardest part. i didn't do it all in one go but if you just took all the plastics off and sprayed em then the dash would be alot easier to get out. but i re-trimmed all the doors not just sprayed em i recovered them in dark grey valour and the top bit in black vinyl. these materials were, $25/meter for valour and $20/meter for vinyl, suplied from northfield car sound. you would need prolly nearly 4 meters of valour to do the roof lining and all doors and parcel tray and bout 1 meter of black vinyl for the tops of the doors. the rest of the plastics i just sprayed with black vinyl paint, which is $13/can.

when I was talking to Not So Stock Ride he said there are 3 screws under those vents near the windscreen. Undo those and all should be sweet.

the only advice i can think of is dont rush and dont force anything take your time and if in doubt think like an enginer ;D

with the dash most of it is textured plastic and the dash itself is a strectched presed on vinyl probably better to spray it unless you realy no what you are doing.

btw good vinyl spray paint is expensive but very good, for soft leather there is a 20 buck sparay for vinyl seats at more paint store and an 11 buck spray from super cheap they will both work but one will be better for some things.

cover the doors and roof with vinyl and spray the rest thats what i am doing i sprayed everything yesterday and i will start puting the dash back in the car today not hard but timeconsuming if you take your time (dont leave any screws out you wont like the rattles)  i will post pics when it is done

mine coast 11 per m of vinyl and 11 for spray all up i think i have spent $100 and so far so good

Whats the best way to do the doors?? is it easier to cover them in vinyl and then spray them? Or would it be easier to make new trims altogether?

my steering wheel alone cost 450 without the boss kit so thats damn cheap what u have done.

vinyl the main part of the door (ie the big wooden bit you're left with once you take everything off). On the front doors, spray the mapholder/speaker cover bit if you want to change it (personally i left mine). The top bit of the trim tou can either revinyl or just spray. Remember though, when you vinyl something you increase its thickness, making it less likely to go back on  >:( I have this problem wih the front and rear plastic trims that cover he roof lining. I probably should have sprayed them, but didnt really think of it at the time.

He got his carpet dyied black as no place makes a moulded carpet for them.
Damnit. I wanted to get some new carpet, theres burn marks in mine. Any idea on how much the dieing cost??

modyourcar.com currently has a special on some obx seats $538 for a pair of Forza 2000's (fixed) and if your from perth you dont have to pay shipping!

but yeh as browny said you have to put the price for rails on top of that

anouther hard long day at work on my car ;D

ok i have just put in the dash and new carpet and damm was i pleased with myself i might not be the best but i sure am a very happy person
on anouther note dont screw arround with new carpet unless you get it pre moulded if not it is extremly hard to put in and it wont look that good i should know mine resembles a patch work quilt :-[ when i have more money i will buy new stuff i think it gos for arround 200 bucks for some moulded stuff.

as for the doors i takle them tomorrow i will be re-vinyaling mine as well as the roof after that the doors go back together the roof gos on then the roof mouldings then i will be all done for now

however i plan to do some el gauges and new carpet (mouldered this time) then my interior will be all done

i will send some pics by the end of the week i went for red and black the spot light girs did the colour co-odernation for me i must admite i had my doubts about there ability (i have no coulour sense) but damm it looks fine. trust the opinion of the home maker women thats all i got to say

i got quoted $550 for a place to custom mould some carpet, your probably best off dying your original carpet (as mentioned above). look foward to the pics!  :)

i was going to diye my carpet would prob cost arround 45 to 50 bucks for the cans and my carpet was not to good anyway so i thought that for 50 bucks (of the roll) i could buy new carpet and glue and cut to fit it worked ok for the front not so good for the back though although the secound time round i did get better.

pretty sure you can moulded carpet for the u12's its like $120 for full carpet (front and back). and what i did was do ALL the work myself hence why it was so cheap for me. and $450 for a steering wheel are you crazy? all it does it turn the wheels man....mine was $119 and it was the simplest one i liked just black and polished metal in the middle.

To get the dash out took me bout 2 hrs to get it out spray it and have it back in. there is 3 bolts across the those vents near the windsheild then 2 down behind the kick panels on either side of the car, then various shit to unglup like vents and stuff like that. i would reccommend spraying the dash, coz the stuff i used doesn't scrathch off the dash coz its soft vinyl, and to cover the dash and get in under and around the where the cluster goes in would be pretty damn tricky.

www.knoxautocarpets.com.au sell moulded  car carpet, but they dont seem to have a listing for the U12 but theres a listing for R31s.  maybe email them and ask about carpet for U12s

the price for basic front and rear loop pile is $120 inc. freight

EDIT: this has been discussed before, see this thread: http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=1005.0
