To rice or not to rice?
« on: Aug 17, 2002, 05:28AM »
What is the go with everyone going all ricey nowadays?
Give me a shit box anyday over a car with neons, stickers etc. But thsts just me.
But seriously....What do people prefer? Cars that dont go, and look way too over the top.
Or cars that look bare as a babies bum but go well?
And no..you cant have a mixure of the two...its one or the other.

to rice or not to rice that is the question

i choose the latter

a fast car will leave the good looking car in a puff of smoke and then it wont be so good looking will it now

There are a few categories actually.  (a)There is performance cars... which go mainly for performance, obviously. No neons, no stickers, no nothings.  Basically just look stock standard until you poke ur head under the hood.

(b) Show cars -  This refers to a car mainly built for show, not performance.  Therefore, all the lighting and decals and paintwork.  These cars don't go on roads, they are way above that.

(c) This category is classed as a performance showcar - Refering to a car that "goes fast" and a car that is made for show.  Examples for performance show cars include the new WRX STi series.  The Holden HSV Maloo and HSV Manta Sedan.

YES, there is a mix of the two.

Thanx for pointing that out.
My car aint rice......its standard! So you can obviously tell, im not into rice.
Sorry to tell you this, But STI's, HSV's Type R's GTR's you name it, dont have neons and stickers saying apexi and nismo as standard items. So..yes, they are beautiful luxury cars inside and out, they can no way be classifed as a mixture of performance and rice. They are merely beautiful performance cars. NO RICE INVOLVED.
ANyways, you mis read my question.  Do you prefer cars that dont go, but look too over the top with neons etc or cars that look or are stock (eg. sti's hsv's in the category) but go well?
Or take our cars for example. Mine is a stocky. Not built to go fast, but id rather leave it as is, then make it into a rice car. Personal opions everyone?

I would prefer an old datto with a SR20DET in it than a stock lancer gli with a evo kit on it. I prefer performance over rice but I also like a nice comfy interior...so I wouldn't buy a datto or the lancer....gimme a worked S15!

However I don't think it is as clear cut between the two (rice and performance) as you make it out to be mitza.  Quote:

"STI's, HSV's Type R's GTR's you name it, dont have neons and stickers saying apexi and nismo as standard items. So..yes, they are beautiful luxury cars inside and out, they can no way be classifed as a mixture of performance and rice. They are merely beautiful performance cars. NO RICE INVOLVED."

So...a wogged out HSV with massive holden logo, maybe a brock signature, tuned by HRT sticker etc with 20 inch chromies doesn't represent a mixture of rice and performance??

The same applies for STI's, Tyre R's and GTR's. Almost all have some influence of rice, be it stickers, neon, gear pedals, stereo's, exhausts that r loud, tinted windows, massive wheels...the list is....endless. Of all cars probably the GTR's are the least riced up cars around...because they have total resepct stock however most people would class the GTR stock bodykit as ricey!

Maybe you don't have riced up performance cars in NSW? We have heaps of them down here.

If I had a stock performance car...then yes i would rice it up a bit to my mild specs. You say a pintara isn't made to go fast....was a turbo 4wd bluebird made to go fast? (yes) Same chassis as our car, so therefore we can make our cars go fast even if it means changing every single part for a bluebird 'fast' part. Therefore our cars are not a lost cause, and many of us are looking at avenues to make our cars faster (turbos, superchanrgers, dual/quad throttle bodies etc etc).

Also btw..please find me any car that has Apexi stickers and neons as standard (factory) items?

Also  I don't think your comparison is valid or realistic:
Quote:
"Do you prefer cars that dont go, but look too over the top with neons etc or cars that look or are stock (eg. sti's hsv's in the category) but go well?"

For a car to look over the top but not go, means a car probably about the $15000-30000 mark, say a lancer gli with evo kit, RX impreza, stock commo with clubsport kit etc etc while a car that looks stock but go well, you give sti's and hsv's as examples. These cars are clearly over $40000, to $80000 and therefore are out of the price range for people with 20-30K to spend. I'm sure if you gave them 80k to spend on a car they wouldn't be driving a lancer gli but a laner evo (for example). The majority of riced up cars are cheaper cars, due to the fact that no matter how you look at it, rice is cheaper than performance. I think everyone would agree, they would rather the EVO than the gli...but how many of use can afford the EVO? (for example)

My personal opinion.

id have performance any day

id rather have a car with go not show.. looking at my car it has more show than go, but because its a daily driver and completely relied on for my job i am not up for go at the moment, id rather keep my car standard maybe tweak it up a bit but thats it..

and get a second car as a hobby car, but it would not have show just go.

The difference is probably cause of the fact that I am a girl  ;D  I prefer show for a hobby car.. and go & show for a drive car.  Building both up equally at the moment.

an sti v5 or 22b rear wing is very ricey if u ask me. so there is rice & performance.

i wouldnt call the tons of cars you see around with stickers on them as ricey... rice is more when u have a 1.3 litre non-vtec honda civic, and then put mugen, vtec and type-r stickers on the sucker. but then, if there was a type-r vtec civic with a mugen body kit gettin around (there used to be one on my way home from work... very nice) then thats not ricey.

if you, for example, have a mitsubishi lancer (stock) and have a whoppin big trd (toyota racing develoment) sticker on it (i actually saw this her in melb) then that is rice gone wrong.

i'd go for mild performance with the looks myself.

Simple.
Too many stickers, flashing lights = Rice

TRD sticker on a Nissan is just wrong. what idiot would do such a thing?

I hope no one would think the stock body kit of a GTR is rice. Because then they are just not thinking at all! Come on...its hot. And besides, I dont believe anything standard is rice and would be wrong to call it so. I mean, Yes, the lancer evo and wrx's have huge body kits, huge wings, but they aren't rice. They are factory. Look at the bonnent of a pulsar gtiR. Its looks awful i think, but still can't be classified as rice.
Gernerally speaking, I think most people go rice bacause they can't afford performance. And if thats the case, so be it. Personally I would prefer to buy a shit box, save money for a decent car, than a rice mobile.
You said somethign about neons and apexi stickers as standard items. You'll never find that I never said that, you must have misread what I wrote.
In Sydney, we have heaps of VN, VP with the current HSV body kit on them. I think that is rice, espeically as it is a standard item on the present car, and a commodore with a HSV body kit, looks like a wanna be.
I agree with you. Most people would prefer a evo over gli, but can't afford it! I just dont see why you would waste money on trying to be something you're not. Even if they can't afford it, rice does get expensive and after the cost of a lancer gli, a fairly new one, with the rice body kits interior stickers tacho even, you could easily buy a stanard GSR with change! SO maybe we are both wrong?
Lets face it, we all want our cars to go well, and look good. I would prefer mine to go better and look worse if I had the option. And I guess thats what I was asking.
If you had to choose between the two...which would it be. A car that went well, and looked bad, or a car that went bad and looked good? Thats goes back to the money. Id rather spend money on my engine than ricey stuff. No use having a nice ricey car, if it breaks down when your going for a cruise in it! A $30 ricey sticker is the same price as a new Nissan Thermostat. A new interior roof, round the same price as extractors. A whole new interior then you're looking at some serious engine work.
I have some great ricey pics Id like to post on here, but dunno how. Can someone tell me?

My opinion leans towards performance. I have spent more money on performance than looks. Sometimes the 2 even crossover - I think extractors and quad throttles LOOK better than their stock equivalent! Also wheels and tyres can improve both looks and handling [if done right]. Tinted windows serve more purposes than enhancing the look too - keeps out heat/light/UV rays etc. It all comes down to individual taste / preference.
My next car will be a looker with power: r34 GTT, cant wait!

See, all I basically meant to say was...  Well.. I'll take my old girl for an example, most of you guys have seen her.  Not only does she look relatively good, but she also goes good.  I'm not saying that she is a performance car and she doesn't even come close to comparing with the figures of even your cars.  But, I know for a fact that if I get in the car right now and drive to Melbourne or Brisbane there would be no dramas.  Not that I'm going to cause she's bumper less  :-/

And what I meant by the performance show.. was.. when a new series of a car comes out.. at the opening or introduction of that car.. it has stickers all over it and it looks really really unreal.  I've been surrounded Holden and Opel (Brittish/south african version of Holden), for basically all my life.  I went to the introduction of the Maloo and Manta in Vic.  That was all I mean Mitza.  When introduced to the general public, of course they won't look like that, that would put another extra $10 000 on top of the arm and the leg you have to pay already.

Although performance would be unreal over looks.  I prefer working on it at the same time.  That way.. my car won't look ricey and have no performance.  Or the other way around, but both will be kind of equalled up. ;)

Crap loads of money to spend when you are working both, but in the end it's worht it eh?

Cheers

Those would be my choice of performance (providing they were worked) and 'mild' rice blended together.

Speaking of rice, has anyone checked out the 'new-wave' of sticker rice on ebay? There are replicas of the sticker kits from 'The Fast and The Furious'
Check em out:

Youve got it all mixed up. True good looks come from true performance. Wings, Vents, Big Wheels, Low Profile Tyres, Air Swallowing Front Bars, are all derived from hi-po vehicles. Has anyone seen that sexy black S15 thats always in Car show coverage in Hot4s and FF? That looks dead horn, but all the stuff on it is functional, the way it should be. All the good bodykits look good cos they are functional and not outrageous.

Yes, but how functional are some of those things for road use? A aluminium GT style wing on a 200sx can be classed as functional, but since there don't really come into affect well over 100kph, then for a daily driver, I would class them as ricey, not to say I don't think they look half bad on the right car.

well, I'd take performance over looks, definitely...

think about it, would you rather a sleeper (say a Pulsar with a worked SR20DET in it), or a Hyundai Excel with huge wing, nescafe tin (caterer's pack) sized exhaust tip, stickers everywhere, etc etc...

I would have much more respect for the sleeper, because when the lights go green, it shows the ricer who's boss...

what use is a huge wing on a front-drive car anyway? isn't the point of a wing to provide downforce? putting downforce on the rear wheels, and effectively taking traction from the front wheels, not really a good idea when the fronts are driving the car...

a bit of looks modifications can look alright, if done properly, and not over the top (no cutting springs, no huge wings, etc). I do like the look of a car with reasonably sized alloys on it (15-17", depending on car), small spoiler, and slightly lowered, especially if it has a bit of the good stuff where it matters, under the bonnet...

but, definitely performance over looks.

I don't think there is anyone here who acturally thinks a 'Hyundai Excel with huge wing, nescafe tin (caterer's pack) sized exhaust tip, stickers everywhere' is a good looking car!

I don't think there is anyone here who acturally thinks a 'Hyundai Excel with huge wing, nescafe tin (caterer's pack) sized exhaust tip, stickers everywhere' is a good looking car!

true, but it's the typical example of rice, isn't it? cheapie $13,990 car, being made up to look like it's lost and looking for the racetrack.

i was just saying, one extreme (trying desperately to look fast), versus the other (sleeper), and you choose which one to go for. Personally, I'd go for the sleeper, as would a lot of people on these forums I believe

I find the power of a stock 2.4l TRX to be enough for me. I don't have enough money, nor the time to go all out and mod my car for performance. Hence I like to try and spruce my car up a little with some "rice" modifications. I know a mate that does audio and interior work so i get it cheap as. All im getting now is a good quality underbody glow kit, fully installed with a switch inside to turn it on and off. Might get it lowered later and hopefully, with the increased hours i am working now, a complete stereo system. It comes down to the what the person wants and how much they are willing to spend. If they want a rice car so be it. But a stock 2.4 L TRX can sure pack a punch, and its a memorable moment when u burn a commodore and see the driver in shock at how this car got the best of him!

Im also buying a ANTRX sticker..to prove my devotion to the TRX brotherhood, and because they look damned good!

And for the money you forked over for that neon kit you probably could've bought a cam or extractors etc.
