carbon fibre bonnets - where to get them done?
« on: Aug 18, 2003, 12:35PM »
i want a carbon fibre bonnet for my trx.. does anyone know where to get them done? i've rang around all the big bodykit dealers that claim to make custom carbon fibre bonnets for them to say they dont do custom work!

anyway, if anyone knows where i could get it done, i'd like to know where.. i'd do it myself, but i dont have a shed to work in..

cheers.

you'd probably have to tell your insurance company as they'd cost a fortune to replace.. i mean they're about 8-10 times more expensive than a standard bonnet.

Apparently if you've got a good mold (or can make one) it is easy as to make a fibreglass/CF bonnet/panel etc.
However getting a perfect finish on the mold takes time and a LOT of polishing.

well yeah, this one is so expensive because it would be a one off and would have to include the cost of making the mould..

Great idea! Paper mache bonnet, and boot, and fenders... held together with araldite or something.. that would be such a weight reduction!

I figured out how to make a half decent fibreglass/CF bonnet:
- Using the existing bonnet, cover in foil and glass over the top (same goes for the bottom if you want the re-inforcement structure which is a definate)
- I reckon 3 layers of glass either side should be strong enough, not too sure how i'd go about sticking the 2 sections together so they'd be the same height/profile etc as the original metal bonnet.
- Sand, sand, sand and more sanding. Layer of bodyfiller, more sanding for a PERFECT surface finish on top.
- Send to mr. CF guy and have him do the rest (sticking it in an autoclave for any decent strength and light weight).

Steel bonnet: anywhere from 15-25kg
CF bonnet: approx 3-5kg.

Far out! $2200 is outrageous.  Think of all the other stuff you could do with that linda money! Noss i say, take out the spare tyre and the jacks and get a tin of gloss paint and paint your bonnet black.  Thats what i call a buget job! hehe  :)
