my car decided to die thismorning... My dad had to move it out the drive way and his story is that he turned it on - all good, then he put it into R and nothing happened and he gave it some rev's and still nothing and he tried D aswell and nothing. So im guessing this means my transmission (automatic) or whatever its called is dead yeah?? Ok now i want to know if anyone knows how to try fix it or something.... anything. My brother is pretty good with cars mainly fords tho. So if you know a way to fix it i could try get him to fix it. If not and the only option is to go to a machanic and they tell me that i need a new one etc then has anyone been in this situation before and knows how much it will cost me to get it fixed or replaced. Im very poor at the moment so i will probably have the car sitting in my backyard for 10 years anyway. So any input what-so-ever about anything to do with this would be great.

was your speedo moving but the car wasn't?? if so your driveshaft has popped out. and requires 7 bolts to fix.

also your gear selector cable may have become disconnected. I've seen that happen before too. easiest way to check that is to get someone to watch for reverse lights. and take note of the engine speed when you put it into gear/netural etc.

Check your transmission fluid, not having enough fluid will cause exactly that problem.

if worst comes to worst and its dead, theres a 2.4 auto pintara at u pull it londsdale that you and youre brother could grab the trans out of and probably pay less then $100 if you put it in yourself

Replace your Torque converter,It will work fine after that.

thanx Borgtj i suggested that to the brother and friend and they said yeah it could be but also a lot of other things too... so today my baby was sent away to the machanics. Gonna try get my parents to pay for it if its not too much.

It was heart renching to watch my poor baby being towed away from me

the guy was fat and ugly and disgusting and he better take care of her!!

I was going suggest checking the fluid also. But jono know's his stuff and beat me to it. Just a suggestion if your car is over 200,000km's, check fluids etc at least once a week. My 2006 Navara gets the same as the U12, I check everything once a week. Spending 20 minutes a week can save you alot of money and downtime in the future.

Make sure you check it with the engine running and gearbox in "Park". If you check it with the engine off the dipstick will over-read.

Oh btw ended up costing me $2250 to get it fixed
The dude showed me all the bits and then how they shouldve looked... yeah pretty fucked. Everything was either bent, scratched, broken, snapped or worn down to as worn down as it could get.

Congrats..you got screwed,did they show you your parts or somebody elses? Suddenly the car doesnt move with all that damage? should have puked sooner. I'm not trying to be a jackass but being in the tranny biz since 1986 I feel I have the right to say EXPERIENCED! good to hear your up and running but sad to see you paid that much.

I am assuming they replaced all the clutch disc's and valves. Thats a lot money but at least you shouldnt have anymore drama's.

Harlot, it actually reminds me of the classic 'girl gets ripped off' scenario... which I think is something the others are getting at.

And yeah, a 2nd hand tranny could have been had for $500 or less installed (by a good place). U12's are worth nothing now-days.

yeh but thats second hand tho... whats the chance this bullshit will happen to me again. I dont have much luck with the whole car thing.

True. My bluebirds auto box was changed over once... then the 2nd hand box would stick in 1st when it was cold (a blockage in the governor). So that was so annoying I converted it to manual, problem solved

$2250 is a lot of money, the problem could've been sorted for a lot less (esp. if you did the work yourself/got help from some of the people here) but as you said at least this way it's not going to have any more dramas any time soon. Did it come with a warranty of any kind (normally not that long for things like transmissions)

haha yeh... only person game enouf to teach me is making me do it in his bloody clubsport. Im just thinking about not breaking/crashing the thing.. haha.

If you've been driving for a while in an auto, its pretty easy to learn manual.

I learnt in a grumpy '83 Hilux that I drove around while my bluebird was in the workshop being converted

Don't worry about crashing it, learning manual is easy.
I was driving around in auto for 1.5yrs before I learnt manual.
I jumped straight in a found I could drive manual straight away. I only stalled it once when I let the clutch out too fast at a set of lights.

The biggest challenge for me is to learn how to drive a 18 speed truck in 2.5 months.

I think it is eaton, it is a Mack fleet/valueliner, ex boral truck.
