Driving Lights Wiring...
« on: Jun 28, 2003, 06:55PM »
Hummmm..

Ok here is what came with my driving lights, no instructions at all (cheers noss :P).

A red wire, which has a fuse half way along it.  The connector fits onto the switch perfectly, dunno what that weird shaped fork bit connects too though.

A yellow wire, which has the same size connector as the red wire on one end (and plugs into the switch perfectly, just like the red wire), and a bigger one on the other end...

The switch

The bag of bits and pieces.  I think i'm supposed to make some wire to run from the two lights, into the big end of the yellow wire... but i'm not sure really...

Anyway, I'm not going to attempt to wire anything up until I know what to plug what into.  I simply want the lights on the seperate switch, for me to turn on and off as I so please.  I never forget to turn off my lights, and I always check the switch before leaving the car, even in the middle of the day!  So thats not an issue.

If anyone can help clear my head of what goes where, that'd be great.

cheers!

The red cable with the fuse definitly connects straight to the battery's postive terminal. So connect the fork end to the + terminal, run the wire through the firewall and the spade will connect to the switch.

The yellow cable goes into the switch also (using the spade bit), back through the firewall and connects to the postive terminal of both of the driving lights.

You then have to ground the lights to the chassis, so that the circuit is complete.

Find a good spot for the switch, easiest would probably be somewhere near your left leg area when sitting in the drivers seat, or if you're feeling adventurous mount it in the dash, or the spot near the handbrake. :)

hope that helps   :cwm12:

Ok, cheers for clarifying mate.

They are grounded through the mounting bracket (which is directly bolted to the chassis through some aluminium).  I'll be wiring them up today.

Corsairs never came with them.  Didn't even come with the holes for them  :)

Here they are wired up and working fine-

Taken without the flash...

Taken with the flash...

They are aimed a little low at the moment.  The angle to the sides is right, just need to re-adjust them to face up a little more.  Although I don't want them blinding other motorists (they are 100w each).

I'm going to try to get some switches from a wreckers, the hazard or rear de-mister switch, and put one of them in under the existsing ones and just paint over the hazard or de-mister symbol.  So it looks more stock-o.

Yeah, its a pinny bumper chucky.

Well, drove around for the afternoon today.  Went out to a wreckers looking for corsair/pinny bits.  They had a corsair just in, but they were not wrecking her yet...

Anyway, I had the driving lights on for most of the day as it was raining and crappy all day.

They were working until about 5min from home, got up the drive, looked at the fuse and the fucker was melted.  Totaly fucked.

Could the rain and a short have done this?  Or was connecting the fused wire right to the battery a bad idea (not a smooth current or something)?

Any ideas guys?

are all the "+" connections covered? the water may have shorted the circuit.
also, is the fuse that is being used the correct rating for the lights??

Just checked out the fuse (its all black, but i could just make it out).

Its got 15A on the bottom of it.

Would it make a differance if the + connector got a little water on it?  I'll cover it on tape and silicon anyway :)

Should i get a new bigger fuse?  Are they cheap-ish?

Nah the way i described earlier is the proper way.

Lights do draw quite a bit of current, but i can't think why the fuse holder would melt but the fuse wouldn't blow ???

A 20A fuse wouldn't hurt, but don't go anything over 20. If anything, the rain must have shorted one of the lights, the fuse blew and then melted the plastic. That's the only conclusion I can come up with.

good luck anyway :)

Well I got a 20A fuse and new holder for it from jaycar a few days ago.  Its all working fine now.

I've also covered the + connectors on the lights in alot of electrical tape as well... even though they are no-where near the - grounding bracket.

Just need to put the switch into the dash and i'm done!

Here is the switch I got off a wrecked corsair all installed in one of the dash holes.

I just printed out a little sticker for it, to cover the rear-demister symbol.  Would looks silly having two rear demisters wouldn't it!

Thats great Gli!

Lol, those switch holes are kickass aren't they ;D

Once I get a few neons I'll wire them up to the hazard switch I have spare, make a little logo for it as well  :P

Edit- Whats the third switch for?  Driving lights like mine?
