I'm engaged!
« on: Mar 30, 2006, 11:59AM »
Hi everyone...

I haven't been on here in a while and the reason for that is that I am now engaged to my long time girlfriend Marina. We're going to get married in March 2007.

Just thought I'd let you all know. We've been very busy making plans, etc. so I've not really had a lot of time for more leisurely things.

I know I'm only 21 and I don't expect everyone to understand or agree with it, but we're both the same type of monogamous people and we've always (quietly) planned on getting married since we started seeing each other 3 years ago.

Good stuff Rich!

I'm getting married the Saturday after Easter. Must be something malicious in the coding on antrx.com...

nah seriously, just remember - you're only going to get married once, but there's not much point spending more than you would on a new car just for one day.

Thanks guys - it's already been pretty hectic with the planning, and she's already starting to stress out, although I'm doing my best to calm her... her parents are getting in the way a little trying to have their way of doing things respected (for the engagement party anyway), they always have (as some might know we weren't allowed to see each other in the first year - we did anyway), but that's not a big issue. The wedding is still ours to plan.

Yeah the old TRX is still going to be maintained in pristine condition, or as close as possible to it. I might just do little things here and there or collect parts for bigger things over time, as I did before I was earning any real money. The wedding is certainly going to be expensive, and we plan to buy a house before then too... more expense. But it's all worth it. Good luck with your wedding wombat, all the best!

Congratulations!

I'm not married but I've been best man or tangled up with the matron of honor for a few weddings (1 as groom, 2 best (or worst?) man, 1 was dating the matron of honor)  and there are a few little redundant bits of advice (no doubt the aunties and mothers have given it all anyway).

Allow LOTS of time for the photo's.  last wedding I was in (October last year) they allowed 4 hours and we still didn't get photo's taken everywhere they wanted to.

get an early start at getting ready.  less stress, more time for pampering.

make sure meals are organized (lunch and breakfast) as it's no good fainting at the alter (gives a bad impression to the other family)

the bride may need someone to feed her lunch if she's having fancy work done on her nails.

if your in your nice dark suit and spill a drink on it, don't use tissues to wipe it up (sounds stupid, but I've seen it happen).

make sure your collar is a bit loose when measured for your shirt.  most of the grooms found it hard enough to breathe without being choked.

make sure you get a good photographer.  I haven't seen it first hand, but having an asshat of a photographer telling you what to do in an arrogant fasion can lead to really poor photos (it's hard to smile when you are 3.2 seconds off choking the bastard!)

book everything well in advance, and confirm at least two weeks and one week before the wedding that the bookings are still ok (mate had a DJ roll up 3 hours late because the dj's missus had left him and taken the booking diary)

something that may appeal (or upset, depending on the people) is an away table at the reception. it's where you put photo's of the people who couldn't be there (the "dearly departed") so at least it feels like there is something of them there. (kinda appeals to me since I lost my father when I was ten)

oh, and try to make sure you get the dress done locally.  a mate got hers from a Melbourne company that got them made overseas and it didn't turn up until FOUR days before the wedding, and then it had to be altered and the veil was missing.

other than that, relax and enjoy the day, it's a once in a life time thing.

best of luck and even though it's  a very long while away yet, I would love to see some photo's posted up after the event.

hahah antrx guard of honour :P

I thought it was a good idea too actually....

I'll have to get a photo with the car just leaving... might get the yokies doing some smokies... or maybe not. Bad impressions and everything.

We're already booking places, and most places already seem to be booked out, we're looking at a few more tonight.

And to answer SSS's question, yes, she's Croatian, and she's great! That's why I'm marrying her!

Congratulations!

I just got married a few monthes ago and it cost me and my family a fortune. By brother-in-law who works for Ford got us a couple of falcon XTs for the cars. I took one for a spin and it was pretty brilliant to drive... although it used a lot more petrol than my Corsair.

Taiwanese families have a lot of expectations about weddings and how much money husbands are supposed to have. I didn't forfill any of them... but I go away with it. I guess your you have to deal with a lot of the same sort of thing.

If you want any tips about orgainising weddings you can IM me if you like. For one thing I know a dress maker who makes dresses like you buy for 3 or 4 grand and she only charges about $200 plus the materials (which in our case amounted to about $500. Maybe getting one mades a good option.

My wife doesn't seem to like the idea of spending any money on the car than is needed to keep it going. Hope you have better luck with yours :)

I'm not letting anyone tell me I'm too young - for every one person who's told me "You're too young" and there's been a few who have, other people have said "if you really are in love then you're not too young." Plenty of people have said they were married at 17-18 and 15-20 years later they're still very much in love. It's encouraging.

The people who say "you're too young" probably aren't really happy with the way their life turned out. My mum is one of those people, as is my nana.
