Still leaving the bonnet up made it worse, just let all the smoke escape and nice clean oxygen in to help burn. Whilst proverbial, it's quite literally fuel on the fire.
In that situation I'd prolly try coast up to someones house (or nearby), leave the bonnet down and the car closed up (but leave it accessible enough to open the car and bonnet quickly, easily and safely) then get out and seek a hose or something quicksmart.
