Anything special to look at when buying a U13?
« on: Jul 14, 2004, 11:02PM »
Apart from the usual stuff whenever you check out a car, could anyone with a U13 tell me if there are some chronic problems with them that I should look out for.

They are still a newish car and haven't done that many km's so the ones I am looking at all look in great condition.

Any help appreciated!

According to the 'Dog & Lemon Guide'

Clutches become difficult to adjust.
Manual gearboxes will fail sometime after 150,000 kms
CV joints are prone to wear
Watch out for oil leaks from the power steering rack as this is a sign that it needs rebuilding
Coolent sometimes leaks from heater. Check the under the carpet for dampness.

Hope this helps. That may seem like a lot of things to check but for comparision, the VB-VL commodore takes up a whole page listing common problems.

Thanks for that Jimbo,

lol re:the commonwhores...you would expect that though!!

Cv joints I already knew....but the gearbox packing up after 150k? Thats a bit quick isn't it.

it would depend on how you treat it.. if you're gonna be doing massive clutch dumps then you'll kill it. nissan boxes are notoriusly weak in stock form but its not hard to beef them up.

i know i asked this in another thread but no-one replied, and advice on anything to check for on the u13 attesa?

ive taken one for a test drive and the only thing is the auto is a bit dodgey, they are gonna sell the car with seperate 5 speed though so this really isnt a worry for me.

There a bit to the auto to manual conversion Kotter, especially when dealing with big assed nissan AWD boxes.

If the auto is dodgy, I wouldn't touch it to be honest.  How many ks on the SR itself... how many ks has the turbo done since it was rebuilt?  Has it ever been rebuilt?

yeh i wouldnt be doing the conversion myself, maybe get some quotes then decide.
or i may just get the auto rebuilt or serviced or something. it only slips a tiny bit between 1st and 2nd, and that was thrashing it :)

edit-  the guy just rang me then,
its done 115k's and the turbo hasnt been rebuilt.

he also said he's missing the linkages for the manual conversion, but yeh I'll probably still buy it,

sorry to hijack this thread, just wanted to know if there was anything specific to check for on the import ones , thanks budgie

maybe this thread about the s13 would help?

http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=6467.0

really the only things you would be looking at that are different to the local models is if the rear diff makes any noise and the turbo related stuff.
