Off the road again...
« on: Nov 7, 2007, 10:48AM »
Well, my little blue and white dotted baby is off the road again. It went like so...

Driving my little brother home from school, get about 200m away from home, and a really loud "POP" kinda sound... Steam gushing out the drivers side wheel well like buggery, not good. Got it home, filled it with water (took about 4 litres), but it was leaking out somewhere, and wasnt hitting the ground under the car... Also bubbling on idol when radiator was full (i think, it was a symptom of blown headgasket and/or cracked head). Filled it with water, drove it, and it just drops all its water.

In short, expensive to repair, not on road for a while  :'(

Sorry to hear. However this maybe an opportunity to do things to your car like fix your paint, manual conversion or whatever. Just might have to save a few bucks first.

It's not manual? Do it now! Best time to do it and if you look hard enough you should be able to get all parts for less then $500 more like $300 or less.

Im going manual end of this year, or early next year Luke, depending on when i can scrape the funds together. Then i will be buying a wreck, probably Ti because i need other little bits like elec windows and mirrors, chrome handles etc etc and LSD would be nice...

Yeah Dad had a look, he has doubts that it is the headgasket or the head now, he thinks it might be a hose popped off and it only leaks when it is under significant pressure i.e being driven for a few minutes. My dad was a mechanic before he busted his back, so i have no hesitation in believing him. At the time the steam gushing from under the car was highly embarrasing... lol.

He got me to take it for a cruise after we filled it with water on idle for about 10 minutes, no leaks on driveway, and as i was driving it didnt leak anything. Then when i drove it normally the next day, it was leaving water again, so it got parked and isnt going anywhere until saturday, when its going to my mech. If its expensive, and we cant afford to fix it, ill start saving for the manual conversion and hopefully get it done at the same time.

Do you guys think that 400-500 bucks in labour is a good price or not? My mech said if i supply him with all the necessary parts hell do it at that price... He's my dad's mate.

At your second attempt Luke, you were right. Right near the firewall, back of the motor, at the bottom, split hose, only gushes out my water when under pressure..

Mech's report was as follows...
Radiator chucked, second hand radiator sourced. System flushed. Hose at back of motor near firewall replaced. Dye put in air con to find where the prick is leaking!!!

The radiator was chucked for a reason, the very reason my car was running hot... The old radiator was 90% BLOCKED!!!

Getting the car back tomorrow night (Thurs) at about 5.30, puttin my 2.5inch catback on friday, for the SA crusie friday night. Hell yeah! Back on the road as of tomorrow night for the millionth time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers guys.

I couldnt really give you a good price, my mechanic does things cheaper than half price, in his own time. From what i understand, it is near the firewall, but not really sure where. My mech had it on the hoist, easy to find from there apparently..

yeah i wish i hadda got here faster... i had a much similar problem about a month ago now. just blew a warn pipe in the exact same spot by the sounds of it. only cost me 10$ and a bottle of grog to get the car home, parts, and fixed. i thought the same considering the first words from my mechanic when i told him were "no point, she's thrown a rod by the sounds of it" hopefully you got out cheap also, but on mention of the "blocked" radiator i should probably do the same
