Pinny Blowing alot of black smoke even at idle
« on: May 3, 2006, 09:02PM »
I did a search but still didnt no what to do about it.

I recently got my injectors reconditioned and the EFI guy that did my injectors also did the plugs for it which i thought would make the car run alot better and it did, for the ride home.

Also i dont have a licence till sunday so the car doesnt move execpt on fridays when i can get others to drive it for me. ANyway it sat there for 2 days after the injectors were done and then i degresed the engine bay and washed it while it was cold. Then i started it and i got a shitload of black smoke coming out of my exhaust.

Im talking alot of black smoke even at idle. WHen u rev it the black smoke comes out alot faster then when u let the accelerator go the black smoke stops then starts again at idle.

I was thinking it would have to be the injectors but was wondering could there be an oil leak or somthing or maybe (hopefully) i just have to replace the leads.

I drove the car for about 5 mins and the black smoke stopped and the car ran as normal. Then i let it get cold again and started it cold again tonight and once again black smoke.

What should i do?
Go back to the injector guy?
Buy new leads/plugs?

btw plugs are about 1 month old and the leads havent been changed in over 1yr (easy)

blue smoke = oil/water and other things burning.
black smoke= excessive petrol.
suggest you install a couple of spark plugs connected to a coil on your tailpipe and burn up that excessive fuel in style.

so something is making the car run rich. do an ecu diagnostic to see if its any of the senors. I reckon one or all of the fuel injectors could be stuck open if that reveals nothing.

SSS had problems where, after getting all 4 of his injectors cleaned and such, 3 of them leaked afterward. Maybe he'll post about it if he sees this thread.

My car sortof does the same, I think my injectors need attention. The car blows black crap out of the exhaust when you start it up after it's been sitting for a while, and it runs gluggy until I warm it up a little and give it a decent burst of throttle along a straight stretch of road to get a heap of air pumped through the engine, i make a huge cloud behind the car (prolly like 20c worth of petrol lol) but it runs fine afterward.

It is definatly running rich, so it's a fuel problem.

Id probably suggest your injectors are leaking internally after being cleaned so when the car cools down, fuel leaks in and once you start it up your running rich from excess fuel in the system.

It's alot cheaper. But I've heard alot of bad things about injector cleaning/reconditioning.

The only thing you can do about it IF it is your injectors is get new ones :-\

Black smoke is often a real pain in the butt to cure. I had black smoke problem  under acceleration. Four different mechanics had four different views. One said running rich, the other said the computer diagnosis says running lean, another said to him it looked like blue smoke and finally got rid of the problem at RACV auto shop where they finally diagnosed it was the lazy Air flow meter that was causing the problem. Now the car no longer blows smoke and more importantly it runs like a Cheetah (although fuel price restricts its run).

My advice will be - don't go to any mechanic who does not have computer diagnostic tools for fuel check up. They will end up guessing the problem and charge you for anything they do. Go to any good mechanic even though you might know he will charge relatively high.  Otherwise you will end up with more money and frustration moving from one mechanic to the other.

lol, i told you to not waste your money on injector cleaning.

just to be sure, undo the plugs on the MAF and the coolant temp sensor (the big one) and check for corrosion etc etc, spray a bit of wd40 in them and see if that helps.

does the car drive normally when the black smoke has cleared? If it does, it sounds like your injectors are haemoraging bad when the car is idling/off; when it's off the residual pressure in the fuel rail is forcing fuel through the injector and into the ports/cylinders, when the injector should be stopping fuel flow.

That sounds like it sss. Yes i no u told me not to get it done and i wasnt going to but the mechanic had to take them out to put new plugs on them and said he can clean them for a few dollars more  so i thought, what the hell.

So now we no the problem, is there anything i can do about it and if not what will f*ck up if i leave it like this?

Yes, get new or second hand injectors and yes, it will consume more fuel.

Yeah, you're going to have to get another set of injectors, unless you can rig up a test bed with a fuel pump and regulator to see if they are leaking when they aren't being triggered.

no offence ashman, but he was just trying to fleece you out of some more money, (i fell for the whole injector cleaning thing too :() you should take it back to him and try and get your money back for cleaning the injectors.

Further more, the only "safe" work that can be performed on injectors is replacing the mesh filter in the injector inlet (if they are removable) and changing the plastic pintle cap. You can clean injectors by setting up an injector flow bench and pumping cleaning fluid through them by operating the injector as they would normally operate in the car.

He ultrasonically cleaned your injectors yes?

I dont no i remember him saying that he ran through the program a few times on my injectors to get them back to perfectly stock. But im pretty sure he never said ultrasonic anything. Thats a word u can remember some1 say.

Anyway i went back to him today and he is a really good guy so he changed a pipe to the regulator i think but he said that probably isnt the problem. THen he said that he would be able to find the problem if i give him the car for the night and he will check the pressure or somthing and the regulator and the 2 other problems it could of had. Then he said that if the injectors are the problem he will pull them out and see if he can fix em again.

Sorry i couldnt tell you exactly what he said but he did say he would check the pressure across the regulator, fuel pump and somthing eles. So he might/probably is doing what u said in ur last posts.
