YOUR opinion on wheels
« on: Jan 8, 2004, 03:33AM »
I am getting new mags VERY soon! now.. i am deciding between 16" and 17"
http://www.hrracingwheels.com.au/images/products/hr-125a.jpg
these are the ones. 1st thing: forget cost.

The things that are getting me confused and indecisive are the following:
-Legalities of having 17" on a U12 pintara ? (isnt more than 2" higher illegal?)
-Having 17" will give me a rougher ride and ill be more likely to damage the mags!
-but 17" looks better

Any opinions?? any input is helpful!

17" is fine.. wheel size seems to be a confused issue. the size increase is if the diameter of the tyre changes. apparently anyway. there are quite a few posts trying to clarify this (with info i got from vicroads & the adrs) but then some people still like to post their thoughts on it which arent always entirely correct and they confuse matters more.

ride will be rougher because of less rubber between your wheels and the road, anyone that wants to drive around like a total fool (not saying you do) shouldnt get mags if they're worried about them getting damaged.

the hr 12 5's are nice wheels and are quite good on the wallet. you can get wheels & tyres in 17" for $1500. not bad at all i reckon.

i'm not sure if white wheels would suit the colour of your car though. maybe opt for the bronze. otherwise many wheels shops offer painting services. i think charcoal wheels would suit your car nicely.

just another thing to add, the "oh fully sick get 17" wheels" attitude isnt the best to have. keep in mind that 17" wheels have more inertia (takes more to get moving) than 16" wheels. so 17" wheels in most cases are detrimental to your performance unless you spend big dollars on lightweight racing wheels which are out of most people budget and not to mention a big favourite on a theif's list of goodies.

although i have posted this before, i cant find the info, so just to clarify this once and for all, i just got off the phone to vicroads, according to the australian standards which are enforced by all road authorities in australia (i.e. queensland transport, vicroads, the rta) wheels cannot be more than 25mm wider than the largest wheel fitted standard to that vehicle from the factory, the overall diameter of the rim with tyre fitted cannot exceed the overall diameter of the stock rims with tyres fitted by more than 15mm. this means that, the size is dependant on the diameter of the tyre, not the rim.

so, for u12 drivers, you can fit any size rim provided the overall diameter of the tyre is no more than 15mm larger than the diameter of your stock tyres, which has nothing to do with the diameter of the rim, and the wheels are allowed to be up to 7" as the widest rim fitted to the u12 from the factory were the 6" trx wheels.

Not to be difficult or anything, but I personally think that the 16" would be the way to go... I think that 17 would look a bit over the top? I dunno... I just think that 16 would look better, thats my opinion!

I personaly think 17's look better, although I think 16's would be better for u12, especialy if u want to lower your car, and they are better for performance on a u12.  I am going 16's very soon.  Just my opinion anyway.

16's were easiest on my wallet at the time, but all the TRX's i've seen with 17's look mad.
And by the way, on a T, legally the widest rim you can get is a 6.5" wide.

if the car hasnt been lowered in some way, be it saggy springs the car would look as though it is on a higher platform... well thats wat my car looked like..

Like noss has been saying.. as long as the overall diameter of the tyre stays the same or +15mm, 17s are legal...

in the end ive decided to go for the 17s.. booked em and all that. 1 week from now!

They were offering me the 17" HR125s for $960 for a set including tyres, and i thought "yeah!!!" but the tyres they include were fkn sh*t 2nd hand and 'just' legal. so i asked about trade-ins and they said that theyd take my stockies, and my 15" auscar rims (with heavy damage, i bought them like that...) and they'd fit brand new 45 profile FALKEN tyres!

Rims=$220ea
Tyres=$215ea

TOTAL=$1740

With trade in: $1000 =)
$740 pretty damn good for my stock gli wheels and my stuffed 15" auscars

nah sssgtr, you can fit 7" legally as its based on the widest wheels offered on any of the cars in the range, not just the particular model.

According to RACV I can't go any wider than 6.5".  can go as big as I want but, as long as they're no wider than 6.5.  I'm pretty sure my 16's are X7 though... DOH!

Yes, RACV don't seem to recognise the TRX's wider wheels as 'of the same model' if you own a Gli or a T.  They will tell you the biggest you can go is 6.5" wide.  Even though you can go 7" on the TRX and they are of the same series.

Corsairs are differant, they all have 5.5" wheels so they biggest I could legally go was 6.5" wide... although mine are 7" wide.

Had the same problem with RACV - Got 90% through the application before they realised their policy wouldn't allow them to insure the car with 7" wide tyres. Their loss, Just Car Insurance's gain.

yeah same as me, but i made sure i got 6.5" wide.
Might get 7 or 7.5 if i get some track rims.

yeah that is the shit thing with insurance when it comes to owning a trx, they dont recognise the fact that the trx has 6.5" rims stock, so essentially you can only go 0.5" wider on a trx for insurance reasons.

the other bits mentioned earlier are in regards to defectability for those that are maybe getting confused.

40 offset is about right i think but you'd be pushed to fit 235's man. 215's/225's max i'd say.
