Title: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Alister on Jul 18, 2005, 04:46PM
With fuel prices being ridiculously high, I thought this experiment might be worth conducting...
I also encourage other U13 Bluebird owners to do it too so we can compare our results :)

Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Vehicle: 1994 U13 Bluebird LX Auto
KMs: ~187000
Last service: ~180500
Extra weight: Standard Nissan U13 tow bar fitted but actual tow ball fitting removed
Mods: no mods taking up excess weight
Fuel: Shell ULP (91 RON)
Driving type: 67% highway, 33% city
Driving style: very sedate
Tyre pressure: 38PSI
Aircon/window usage: None (unless vital)
Cruise control: not used
Current average fuel consumption: Between 9-10.5L/100KM (depending on type, style etc of driving)

Prediction
I predict that my fuel effiency will drop below 9L/100KM but range between 8L/100KM and 9L/100KM.

I've removed all the junk from my car and left in all the seats and the spacesaver spare. As above, in order to gain maximum fuel efficiency i'll be changing my driving style to very sedate/granny :)
I'll be checking/maintaining the pressure of my tyres weekly and carrying no passengers if I can avoid it.

I've just filled up my tank (until the first click) and reset my trip meter. When I have covered about 500KM, I will fill up my tank again (until the first click) and calculate my fuel consumption. In case anyone doesn't know how, fill up until the first click, reset trip meter, fill up (until the first click) after a reasonable amount of KMs (500ish), note how many Litres go in and how many Kilometres you have covered. Divide the Litres by Kilometres covered and multiply by 100...

Example: 50L / 500KM * 100 = 10L / 100KM

I'll post my results probably on the weekend or early next week if I do a fair bit of driving...
Or else, in a couple of weeks.
If other U13 owners can be stuffed, give it a go please :)
Cheers.

PS - "Mods: no mods taking up excess weight" means that sure I have an aftermarket stereo and tail lights, they are practically taking up no more weight then the stock components would. Say if I had a heavy sub box (that I didn't want to remove for the experiment), i'd mention it under Mods or if I had any performance mods which would alter fuel consumption.

PS - I will not be driving with the aircon on or windows open at any time. UNLESS i'm dying of heat and in that case - aircon on fan speed 2 if doing 80-100KM/H and window open if doing under 80KM/H. Window open at high speeds = increased drag, aircon on = increased load on engine...
I will not be using cruise control as it is more inefficient than holding your speed manually.

This is an excellent little experiment Alister.

I will post up data on my car as well (doesn't have to be U13 only does it ;))  My current record keeping has an average fuel economy of 13-14litres per 100km.  I would however say, my driving is far from sedate at times :P.

Thanks for giving it a go guys  ;D
I've been babying my car around the place since yesterday and not using cruise and it's getting really annoying  ::)

Budgie: Cheers, yep everyones welcome :)
Might be worth moving it to general so everyone can take part in it.

the most out of a tank i got was 510km thats with premium unleaded fuel and a ratio of 90% highway driving - 10% city driving the least i have gotten was about 420km lol  :-\

Vehicle: 1989 RNU12 Bluebird ATTESA Ltd (Auto)
KMs: ~102288
Last service: ~98500
Extra weight: Subwoofer/amp
Mods: 3" zorst, increased boost, bov
Fuel: Shell Optimax, Mobil Synergy 8000 & 6000
Driving type: 50% highway, 50% city
Driving style: moderate, sometimes quick
Tyre pressure: 35PSI
Aircon/window usage: None at the moment, too cold!
Cruise control: N/A
Current average fuel consumption:

Last three recorded tanks-

389km - 50litres (12.8 to 100km) - Synergy 8000
357km - 49litres (13.7 to 100km) - Optimax
357km - 50litres (14 to 100km) - Synergy 8000

My current tank was filled with Mobil Synergy 6000 due to the stupid price of fuel.  No pinging as yet, I will see how economy suffers!
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: BoGAn on Jul 21, 2005, 02:04PM
IMO, the difference in price between unleaded and hi-octane (mobil 8000) is easily justified by the extra klms you get out of the hi-octane, making the klm/$ about equal for the two. If you have the car set up to run on its fine, and not much of an excess cost.

This is a good idea. Ill consider doing it, but im relucatnt to change my driving style just now, and im not overly concerned with petrol prices. Theres more important things than that. (Note that i dont mean anything bad by that last sentence, im not having a dig. Just that petrol prices arent the only thing that matters). That being said, I do try to work it so that i fill up on days whe petrol is 'cheaper'.

Oh yeah, antother thing. I remember an article in Wank 4s or some similar magazine a while back where one of the writers did a similar experiment. His normal driving vs granny driving. I think he saved about $10 or so. Not bad, but he didnt think the saving was worth the cost of not enjoying driving.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Budgie on Jul 21, 2005, 04:33PM
Yeah, after a few days of granny driving i'm starting to agree with the wank 4's guy.

Off boost is no fun in a 1.8litre car :(

I will just stick with it for this entire tank and see what I get.  I also fixed an intake leak, and my tyres were WAY to low (26 psi instead of 36!) so it should be better no matter what!
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: JIMB0 on Jul 21, 2005, 05:25PM
I tried this once and driving like a granny did not save me any fuel at all. I have a 5sp CA20e.

10L/100k - Mostly city/urban driving

The best I have ever got is 7.5L/100k on the highway with aircon going, cruising at about 100-110kmph.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: wombat on Jul 21, 2005, 08:45PM

Model: R31
Engine: CA20E
Gearbox: FS5W71C
Modifications: Mobile phone holder, no wheel covers, boot full of crap.

over a few tanks - 123.8 litres to do 1343 kilometres - 9.2 l/100km or 25.5 miles to the US gallon

not bad for an old George.

My old corsair would do 600ks to a tank... with the CA20E.

I miss that aspect of the car very much!

Just got my best fuel economy ever :P

378ks - 44ltrs - 11.6ltrs to 100km

Probably because it was 96 Octane Mobil Synergy 6000 and would cause the car to ping if I tramped it at all, so I took it very easy!

Post by: aussie-gli on Jul 25, 2005, 02:39PM
I found after returning my ignition timing to stock, i get much better fuel economy.  I average between 11 and 13 liters per 100.  I find that driving like a nanna or driving aggressive has minimal effect on my fuel economy.

Considering I'm sitting on 340,000 Ks with original stock injectors, I reckon that's a fair effort. I run Bosch super 4s + Bosch leads.

My old car (91 Camry 2.0L 4cyl) did a best of around 9-9.5L/100KM in the time that I had her, and that was taking it easy and never using the aircon either.

That is great. Just to clarify that it's an auto u're driving? What mods have u done, what sort of driving conditions? Would u like to share a bit more info? ;D
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Alister on Jul 26, 2005, 02:43PM
wicked: Yeah, it's an auto :)
No real mods that would affect fuel economy except for a standard U13 towbar fitting which adds extra weight...
As for driving conditions, pretty sedate, but I gave it an occasional boot, raced an old Holden, got it up to 100km/h quickly on a merge onto a highway (daily).
Approximately 67% highway, 33% city driving.
Check my first post for more info.

PS - Best economy figures ever :)
As for $$ savings, around $6 saved a tank.

Also, official fuel consumption figures for the U13 Bluebird Auto are:
City  10.0
Highway  6.6

Figures for the Manual are:
City  9.5
Highway  6.4

13L/100km average
15L/100km hard driving.

For comparison, my GF has a 2001 Holden Astra City (3 door, 1.8L auto, 35000km) and she got 7.64L/100KM with 85% highway, and 15% city and she drives like a granny all the time :)

That's debatable, in my old car a 91 SV21 Camry having the aircon on any speed would result in the cars power basically disappearing and fuel economy rising...
No noticable difference in power and economy with the aircon on a lowish to medium setting on my U13. Never have it on high :)
Yeah, windows down = drag, less fuel efficient as a result...

Wicked: I'll be interested to see your fuel consumption figures :)

Wombat: Bring it on! :)
Heading for sub 8.5L/100KM this week, and then i'll try my luck on BP Ultimate over a few tanks.

Ashman: Not bad figures...

While I have the engine out my Attesa, Im going to extend the wastegate actuator rod so I can run close to 0 psi. This should make it easier try drive nicely in first and second gear and give better fuel efficiency. Because I have a dual stage boost controller, if I want it to go better I can just flick the switch. Once the car is all back together I will try the fuel economy out.

just a bit of  a problem i have with the mythbusters thing

* Test was done at 50MPH, about 80Km/h
* Drag rises the faster you go

I reckon that at 100 km/h you're better off using the air con, but that's my opinion.

The best I ever recorded was 7.9L/100 - the average is 9.5L/100km. I have a pretty big spreadsheet that I've used since this time last year and have accounted for every drop of fuel that's gone into the car since then. I might upload it tomorrow so you can all have a look.

Yeah i'd only had the car for 2 or so weeks b4 that so i was still "running it in" :) But nah back to normal driving for me. All petrol problems were fixed and engine (apart from starter motor) is running perfectly (or as well as a 14yr old engine at 209000km does)

I couldnt be happyer with it!

550km - 60litres (9.16L to 100km) - BP Ulitimate ($1.15 a/L)
You divided the km by the fuel, not the other way round. Your consumption is 10.9l/100km. I was surprised how little fuel I used, I didn't check the exact mileage, but I got an extra 50-80km out of that tank compared to my normal delivery driving ::)

I get around 12.5l/100km doing delivery driving and the daily grind to and from uni :-\

Fuel Efficiency
Vehicle: 1994 U13 Nissan Bluebird LX
KMs: ~206000
Last service: ~200000
Extra weight: Air Con
Mods: whiteline front and rear swaybars
Fuel: Woolies Unleaded (95Ron)
Driving type: 10% highway, 90% city Or 90% highway, 10% when I go on trips
Driving style: Very sedate as I have kids
Tyre pressure: 32 PSI all round
Aircon/window usage: Aircon most of the time in summer, heater in winter, windows always up.
Cruise control: Whenever I drive on the highway.
Current average fuel consumption: 40L gets 550km's on the highway = 7.27L per 100kms, 40L gets about 300km's to 350km's in the city = 13.3L to 11.4L per 100km's

Last full tank:
About 300kms from 40L city driving.

I am really impressed with my bluebird when I drive on the highway I can get over 500km's on the highway easily but when in the city the fuel economy is shithouse!!!!!! O2 sensor has been replaced and I run fuel injection cleaner through her every couple of months and keep her serviced too.
I drive conservitively as it is the family car and kids are normally in the back.

I thought these U13's were meant to get 10.4L per 100kms in the city, well roughly.

Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Alister on Oct 7, 2005, 01:25AM
Not a bad result wicked :)
Cheers for taking the fuel economy test.

MrMultiValve: The official LX auto figure is 10L/100KM for city driving, while the LX manual does 9.5L/100KM.
Now 11.4L/100KM in the city aint too bad, the fuel economy test manufacturers perform aren't really real world figures so you should always expect to consume a bit more.
At the momen't, i'm getting anywhere between 8L-10L/100KM depending on how much city and highway driving i'm doing and how aggressive my driving style is.
11.4L/100KM in a pure city environment isn't bad for a tired, old engine.

Possible causes:
32PSI is quite soft for tyre pressure, i'd recommend you pump them up to 38PSI and check your pressures monthly. A general rule is the higher your tyre pressure, the better your fuel economy (just don't go pumping it up to around 60PSI ;) ).
What oil (viscousity) are you using? The KA24DE runs better and more efficiently on thinner oil (5W/ etc).
Can you smell a strong fuel smell when the car is idling? It may be running rich.
Check that your air filter isn't clogged or better still install a high flow air filter.
Carrying any unnecessary weight? Get rid of it.
Reconsider your driving style.
Reduce drag - keep your windows up. Or if you must, use windows for cooling at speeds below 80KM/H and aircon for above.
Replace or check your leads, plugs, and coil.

Anyone have anything else to add?

I forgot to add that I have a $3,000 stereo in the bluebird but I cannot get rid of that  ::)

11.4L is the best I can possibly get in the city and that is only once, at the moment I have done about 40kms on the first 1/4 of the tank, but I am about to go on a highway trip.

I have spent about $2000 in the last few weeks on her doing maintenance etc.. hoped that the O2 sensor would improve the economy, I will change the plugs and see what happens. My air filter could be clogged up a bit I have a pod to put on it.

How much does a new coil cost?

Thanks

If you have a nice heavy sub box get rid of it :)
Just buy a new air filter, if you don't want to spend much grab a new high performance Valvoline panel filter (about $15 from memory). Spend a bit more ($80 for uni filter, $140 for K and N) for a decent high performance/flow panel filter. Don't bother with a POD filter unless you locate the pod out of the engine bay to a place where it is sucking in cool air. If you just put it in your engine bay, it will be sucking in hot air giving you shit performance and fuel economy.
No idea on the cost of a coil mate.

48.04 Litres
559.9 km

8.58 Litres per 100 Km - combined delivery driving and highway to/from work.

This means I beat Alister, at any rate!
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency

My best so far... I'm not sure what it is with my car, but something is still 'off'

47.31 litres
494Km

9.5 ltr - 100km  (75% highway driving and the rest very tight city driving, melb CBD and around geelong).

The tank after that, only driven to work and back and to a mates back a few times over two weeks...

295 km & 44.26 litres used... so 14.9 or so to 100km!  But I give it a little a fair bit on the way home from work and to work early in the morning.

it will be pretty much all suburban driving, with a little highway
ive put the foot down a few times as well.

That's a good figure. Now that you've mentioned standard unleaded petrol, I remembered watching one of the current affair programme on TV. They did a test on the mileage of each fuel with some newish Hyundai cars, circling around. Here's the result with best mileage to worst: E10(Ethanol 10 %), E5, Unleaded, Premium unleaded. Interesing figures isn't it  ;D

Hehe, i've switched down to premium (95 octane) instead of 98 octane optimax or synergy 8000.

Fuel economy seems to have improved!  Almost 200km from still over half a tank... which is damn good for my car around town!  I used shell premium.

I have swapped to Mobil PULP (RON95). Seems like a good compromise between fuel price & power( n smooth idling).
Here's some calculation:
$25 - 20.9 litres 95 RON PULP (Mobil $1.195/l )
$25 - 21.8 litres unleaded (Mobil $1.145/l)
$25 - 20.08 litres 98 RON PULP (Assuming shell $1.245/l)

Assuming fuel economy of about 9.5l/100km and comparing both PULP against ULP,
An extra mileage of 9.47km would be required to cover the cost of RON 95 PULP.
An extra mileage of 18.1km would be required to cover the cost of RON 98 PLUP.

Tell me what u guys think about the calculations? ;D

Ok, I've done my test... and the results are in...

Car: 93 Bluebird LX
Engine: KA24DE
KMs: 244000 (This motor about 60,000)
Last Service: 240,000
Mods: Drift Pod Filter on WAI, Hi-Tech Hedders, Ground Wire Kit
Extra Weight: 12inch Kicker Sub in box
Tyre pressure: 39psi all round
Tyres: 205/45 R16s

Last fuel test reading:

375.2kms - 28.95lts = 7.1ltrs per 100kms

I'm pretty happy with that.. and I think I owe it to my ground wire kit... the last test I did, (before the Service, WAI and Ground Wire Kit) I was using approx 9.5-10ltrs per 100kms

I believe... that should put me on top of the leader board :)

Tim.

If the ground wire kit really does improve things that much think i might do it myself one day.

My car is not doing to good at the moment. I think last reading i got was

$30 of Caltex Vortex (96) gave me around 24.08L and i got around 220-240km. Not sure on the exact milage. Always forget to check. But tomorrow am doing new sparkies, fuel filter and cleaning the POD so that might improve things.

That's a great results. I never thought that 7 plus litres/100km would be possible in the bluebird. I guess that a key factor in this result could be the reduced drag with 39PSI on the tyres.  ;D

Just reviving this thread..

On the weekend I went on a fishing trip, did a 320km trip there and back, and used roughtly just a touch over half a tank - i'd guess 32 litres.

10L/100 on the highway, pretty much the same as when it was non-boosted :) That was with 3 people in the car and the car chocablock full of supplies, and the occasional stomp on the go pedal.

before I go of in a useless rant about what I use to get, What's a ground wire kit?
edit: scratch the ground wire - found it! (this must be my month of the 'tard attacks!)

I haven't actually done the experiment yet (pinny's off the road - dam money!)

back when I was driving it full time I use to get about 550 K/tank (approx 50 L) on standard unleaded (back when it was about 79 c/L long time I know!)  it was about 90-95% open road, the rest was city driving, I had to do about 3 K of dirt track first and last thing (the joys of living on a farm).  about 50 K/tank was a direct gain from the cruse control. I use to run my Tires at around 30 psi.

The main thing I remember was I could get about 300-350 k on half a tank, then it use to drink the last bit.

of course these figures are based on me behaving the entire time, the worst I ever got was a touch over 380 on just under 50 L.

once I get the old girl back on the road (new drivers seat, fix panel damage, service, I think she needs new rings sometime soon, oh and I'd better fix that oil leak!)

PS if anyone thinks this rant isn't at all relevant let me know and I'll delete it back to the original question.

well, here i my info.. i have bought this thread back up because i was very dissapointed with my fuel consumption last night, until i actually calculated everything and then read this thread.

Vehicle: 1990 pintara 4 manual
Kms: ~245,000
Last serviced: oil - 500km ago, plugs ~4000km ago
Extra weight: sub box, amps
mods: cai, r4 cam
Fuel: mobil ulp
Driving type: 80% hwy, 20% city
Driving style: normal driving with the occasional squirt at the lights
Tyre pressure: 36-38psi
Aircon/window usage: air con doesnt work. occasionally had the drivers side window down a touch
Cruise control: n/a
Current average fuel consumption: just got 545km from 43 litres of fuel which is a very respectable 7.89 litres/100km

i'm still running the stock ecu, which is a lot richer than my stage 3 chips.. when i get my ass into gear i'll chip the t and hopefully be able to squeeze a bit more efficiency out of the old girl

What did you get with your Stage 3 chip was in the TRX?

A guy came into work last night in a white U12 TRX so we had a chat for quite awhile about it and he reckoned that the KA24DE is quite a bit more efficient than the KA24E.
His TRX had over 330 000km on its original engine  :o
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: noss on Mar 9, 2006, 09:23AM
Yeh that result is pretty bloody good. I was originally disappointed because I was expecting to hit at least 600km by the time the fuel light came on, but the fuel light was well and truly on at 500km.. it seems though that my light comes on quite early (around 15-18 litres left in the tank)

I had decided to see how far I get on different brands of fuel, currently living in the outer northern suburbs and working on the gold coast (~110km each way) gives a lot of opportunity to do so.

So far the mobil is on a winner, I’m running on shell at the moment and so far I’ve gotten 340km and my needle is showing half a tank.. but I’ll get more accurate figures once I fill up.

In the trx i did a fuel efficiency test between Melbourne and Brisbane and back. I got around 10.2 litres per 100km on the way up, that was with stock ecu, 2.5 exhaust and the r4 cam, on the way down with the rb25 air flow meter and stage 3 chip installed, I was getting a solid 8.7 litres per 100km..

Keep in mind that the t has a rebuilt engine and a stock exhaust which may be why the figures are so good.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: SSS on Mar 9, 2006, 12:08PM
The DE would be more efficient in terms of fuel usage as it has a higher compression ratio, a central spark plug which would promote a good flame front and a better fuel burn. An extra exhaust valve and better flowing ports help also.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: noss on Mar 10, 2006, 08:53AM
ok, on shell ulp i've just done 556km on 46.1 litres of fuel which equates to 8.29 litres per 100km.. so it appears that the shell isnt as good as the mobil.

i've just filled up with caltex to give it a run.

Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: RichTRX on Mar 10, 2006, 09:46AM
Mine averages 8.9. Does not move within .5L from there either way. 80% city, 20% hwy. Driver's window nearly always down. 32psi all round. 80-100% highway driving yields quite significant results. I got 400 from a 1/2 tank with 95% highway driving with 2 people and a full boot with heavy suitcases, etc. then went driving in the city so only got 300 out of the rest of the tank. Still, pretty good effort.

Fuel light nearly always comes on between 540 and 560km/h. I repeatedly get over 600km/h from a tank. I usually chicken out on the fuel light at about 610-620, depending on whether it's still going on and off. I don't usually drive lead-footed but I do give it the occasional redline run.

Title: Re:Fuel Efficiency and premium fuels

IMO, the difference in price between unleaded and hi-octane (mobil 8000) is easily justified by the extra klms you get out of the hi-octane, making the klm/$ about equal for the two.

Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Taiwan Corsair on Mar 10, 2006, 10:23AM
The RACV did some pretty carefull testing on this and they showed that the best fuel efficiency came from 95 RON fuel, which out performend both 98 and 91 RON. This is because if you have too much of the heavier hydrocarbons (ie octane) the benefits will be offset by the fact that some lighter hydrocarbons burn more readily than octane. They also found that the 98 RON fuel produced more polution than 95.

They suggested that running 95 RON fuel can be 3-5% more fuel efficient, which still means you are loseing money compared with the cheaper 91 RON, because its often more than 5%cheaper. However, there may be benefits such as engine cleaning, which would have to be measured over a much longer time (the life of your engine) that probably make it worthwhile. You'll also be makeing less pollution.

Older cars are generally not engineered to take advantage of the extra octane and therefore don't gain significantly in terms of fuel efficiency, though on cars designed to run on leaded petrol there is often a benefit.

If anyone else has read that (RACV magazine) then please correct me if I'm misquiting them off the top of my head...
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: SSS on Mar 10, 2006, 11:04AM
Those tests i believe were performed for your average joe schmo, not those after performance. If you can tune for it, the higher the octane the better.

Personally once i've sorted my fuel system, i only plan on running ethanol blend fuel due to it's high octane rating and price.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency

My car hates shell 95 octane noss.  Pinging like a bitch on it.  Runs ok on mobil 95 or BP 95 octane however.

On another note, I am currently running a tank of BP Ultimate for the first time ever.  My car absolutley loves it!  Compared to optimax or synergy 8000, the car has loads of power in the top end and its actually dropping boost towards the redline as well, 9psi down to 7psi from around 4500-5000rpm to shift point as I've got the boost controller wound all the way in (so its running 'stock' boost).

Car is faster than it has ever been, just from changing to BP Ultimate.  Fuel economy is much the same as any other fuel.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: SSS on Mar 25, 2006, 10:47PM
Just a side note, i think i have found the reason for my poor fuel economy: a stuffed thermostat. It was opening fully when the coolant got remotely up to temp, and was not maintaining a constant engine temperature like it should have by regulating the flow rate of coolant to the waterpump. It just stayed open basically.

This next tank of fuel should yield much better numbers.

wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in the new shell fuels? comparing a few premiums, this was my result..

caltex 98 - 480km off 54 litres! (11.25   litres per 100 km)
bp 95 - 570 off 48 litres (8.42   litres per 100 km)
shell optimax (before fuel efficiency formula) - 560 off 47 litres (8.39 litres per 100 km)

shell 95 with the new fuel efficiency formula - 606 off 49 litres (8.09 litres per 100 km)

i've done some mods to my car since my last posts on efficiency and my car has shown to be slightly less economical (i.e. closer to 9 litres er 100km on average)

caltex has been consistently poor in my results.. the 11.25/100km is actually worse than the result that i got with the standard unleaded.. so my only recommendation - steer well clear of caltex!

It seems to get more fuel in when the front of the car is pointed slightly down hill; less when slightly uphill. This is about 80% city driving, 20% highway. But I am usually a conservative driver.

ie. I might run the fuel down to approximately the same level, and consistently get 56l (I usually drive for approx. 40km after the fuel light comes on) in at one servo, yet consistently get 52l in at another servo. Seems to make all the difference.

Usually I'd be spitting chips if the fuel light came on before 500km, and would be a little bit sour if it came on eariler than 550km.

Noss, thats almost entirely highway km though isn't it mate?

When the ECU is running in closed loop mode anyway (cruise, low throttle)...  Is that right mate?

ah i've actually been doing a little bit more city driving, on each of those tanks i have tested since i've added the chip and afm to the car consisted of driving to work (120km each way on the fwy) 2 or 3 trips to mum & dads (about 20km each way normal burbs type stuff) and 1 trip to the city valley (about 45km each way much like springvale road or pennant hills rd for the sydney peeps)

so i'd say its about a 80-20 to 70-30 split if your looking at it from a time actually on the road perspective (opposed to km perspective).. i did two tanks of pure city & suburbs driving about 2 weeks ago and got around 510km to 45-ish litres both times around, once on mobil, once on shell. i tend to drive a bit harder when lights and traffic and corners are involved ::)

I just filled up with the new Shell ULP 95 today so i'll see if my KM/L changes. With 100% city driving on Optimax, i've recorded 13.9L/100KM in my VX LS1.
A few people at my work have been using the new fuel and reckon it has increased fuel consumption if anything but who knows how they've been testing it...

Apparently an LS1 Edit (diff computer tune basically) gives you a good power increase and actually reduces fuel consumption. Might want to check it out Alister

Yep, looked in to it already mate. The going rate for a MAF tune is $900 whilst MAFLESS is $1200. Cash I don't have at the moment though :(

The new Shell ULP 95 is a winner for me, recorded 12.58L/100KM with 60% city and 40% highway driving and I was giving it a good boot occasionally :)
That's a crazy figure for a LS1, especially an unedited one. The last tank in my U13 was nearly as much as that!

might post up some of the figures ive recorded over the past fortnight:

using Bp Ultimate (98ron) 380km from 58L (15.2L/100km) all "city" driving

using Bp Ultimate again    455km from 57L (12.5L/100km) this was 50% city and 50% highway and included our cruise on this tank, ive also noticed if i the odd boot or three i give it each day, over the course of the tank, ill loose anywhere upto 100km off the final kilometerage (?) of the tank.

one thing ive heard though, this is when i went to book my dyno a while back, it that higher ron fuel detriorates quickly, the fella told me to fill up the morning of the dyno run, as 98ron fuel will drop to 95ron levels in 48hrs and so on, the only way to combat this is to drop some octane booster in when you fill up, and ive done this a few times now, it makes a marked difference to the final L/km.

Given the Optimax Extreme a try yet, Sticks?

I filled up with it last week and managed a poor 14.72L/100KM and that was with about 20L of ULP 95 left from the last tank!
I won't be trying it again, i've heard good things about ethanol fuel if you tune your car for it, but it's not doing anything great for my stock LS1.
Also, it's way overpriced - 17c/L?!? Bah!

some fresh figures from my latest fill up today:

Car: Pintara TRX Manual
Took: 45L
Travelled: 510km
Economy: 8.8L/100km
80% city 20% cruise and 100km/hr zones

Quite happy with that!

90% highway 10% city driving

Well, try save up. I hear it's worth it.

Took the car down to PowerTorque today and got a LS1 edit done...
Very, very, happy with the result, the auto's shift points have been firmed up but are still nice and smooth for comfort.
The car pulls much harder now. Over 3000km, the trip computer read 14.0L/100KM which was mainly suburban stop start driving with a couple of highway runs each week.
I reset the trip computer for the drive home and now it's reading 12.7L/100KM. Keep in mind that was with flogging the guts out of it driving it home through the suburbs from Brendale.
When I drove it in an 80km/h zone it dropped to a bloody amazing 9.7L/100KM. Crazy stuff.
As for power, they reckon the tune is good for 260-270kw at the fly. Not bad ey?

Hardly any Adam. Adelaide doesn't really ever have bumper to bumper peak hour. That tank was back when i was at Uni and even though the trip there is during 'peak hour' the traffic still flows fairly well on my route, just takes longer. Without any 80/100kmhr stuff I have gone back up to 10L/100km now.

For as little as 10 grand (less if you find a VT II Exec) you can get into an LS1. A custom MAFless tune should see you break 300kw.

Question for you guys getting 8-9L/100km's, how much of that is peak hour traffic?

nearly all peak hour for me, but in a half/half kinda way..  basically heading toward brisbane its bumper to bumper, once i get over the gateway bridge heading away from brisbane towards the coast, its heavy traffic for maybe another 10km and then its all sweet.

also, since i've been living down the coast, i've noticed that with the car sitting for a week, the 'new formula' shell 95 has pathetic economy, so i'm back to mobil 95 while my car is sitting around doing nothing.

the new shell 95, i get about 350km to the first half a tank.. the car sits for a week and i drive home to brisbane for the weekend, basically the fuel line is on by the time i get to mum & dads to pick up my mail (120km)

the mobil 95 obviously still drops its octane while sitting around, but seemingly not as badly, i get maybe 200-250 off the 2nd half of the tank after its sat for a week.

The LS1 is still a great engine, the L76 (in the VZ II Holdens) is great too.
The LS2 is only in the HSVs.

Filled up last night after work and the result is 11.6L/100KM.
About 150km of that was highway driving and 185km of that was city/suburban driving. I was driving it hard for about the first 150km then I started driving it sedately.
Next week when I fill up, i'll post my result.
Also, when I filled up and turned on my car, the distance to empty read 680km, the highest I had ever seen when I had filled up before the tune was 570km.
On the highway, the instant L/100KM display hovered between 7.1-7.6.
It's made a huge difference as the tune enabled the lean burn on cruise feature.

Well, after 999.93km since the edit, i've calculated my fuel consumption to be at 12.46L/100KM AT THE PUMP. The trip computer is reading 12.6L/100KM. To give you an idea of how much of my driving was city/suburban and highway, my average speed is 51.6KM/H.

I was simply stating if the car is running properly (ie. roadworthy) - driving style has the biggest effect on economy.

That converts to 7.67litres/100km. My Bluey personal best

I dont try for economy, and my driving is all around town, lots of stops and starts, and very short trips, I sort of live in a 5 k radius of everything, anyway I use 15 litres of fuel for every 100 ks.

my navara weighs 1600 kg and is a manual, I think most of you guys cars weigh in the vasinity of 1200 kgs ? max.

Sorry to dig here lads, but i have an interesting experiment. As some will know, and some wont, my pinny is on LPG. In this thread we have been calculating how many L/100km. I obviously cant use this effectively, as mine will be way higher. Instead, i thought we could calculate how much it costs each of us to drive that 100km, using the x amount of litres times the current price of your fuel. Mine is as follows...

Use 48 litres every tank.
Get 320km driving very un-sedately.
Therefore, 48/320 = 0.15 x  100 = 15L/100km.

I only buy my gas at 53.9c/L now or lower (price has risen so much in 10 months)...
So, 53.9c/L x 15L = .539 x 15L = 8.085

i.e $8.09 per 100km.

I do not intend to start a debate about power loss on LPG etc, as i know that i have lost power, just thought it would be interesting to compare the costs...
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: cruizer on Nov 7, 2007, 01:19PM
60 litres gets me 450km.
60/450 = 0.133 x 100 = 13.33L/100Km

Assume price of 132 (98 octane)
132 x 13.33L = 1.32 x 13.33L = $17.56

Fark i need to get a new coolant thingy...

My XR6 Turbo has a trip computer that says 14.1l/100km at present, although that is over several thousand km.

Filled up the other day, 58l got me 480km
58/480 = 0.121 x 100 = 12.08l/100Km

Filled the tank at $1.28 (V-Power)
128 x 12.08 = $15.46 per 100km

Wow... just got the best tank I've ever had in the year I've owned the attesa (sr20det)

59L = 511km which is about 11.5L/100km, around 150 of those kms were highway rest was suburban giving it a fair bit of stick every now and again, very impressed :) the norm is 370-450km from a tank

cost per 100? lets see.

filled her up at $1.29 (vortex 98) so that's $14.83/100km

I do not intend to start a debate about power loss on LPG etc, as i know that i have lost power, just thought it would be interesting to compare the costs...

I'm thinking of putting the daily driver on vapour injection LPG should fuel costs increase a tad too much in the next 6-8 months.
My parents have that system on their R50 Pathfinder and there is no noticeable difference in power between petrol and LPG. It feels a little torquier down low on LPG to be honest.

previously i was on about $16/100km for the last tank of fuel, that should improve with some changes i have made this week.

Heh heh heh...

U11 Bluey + CA20E+T + CA18DET injectors + needs a tune badly.

The last tank was 15.9l/100km.

15.9*1.369 = $21.77/100km  :o

I've got a potentiometer in the AFM signal wire going to the ECU which I use to lean out the mixtures a bit. The CA18DET injectors are much bigger than the factory CA18ET injectors, so much so that it was fouling the plugs with soot before I put the pot in.

Now because there's a lower load signal going into the ECU I assume it's running fairly advanced timing. Because of this I have to richen the mixtures, as I can't adjust the timing easily except by turning the dizzy, and this is sort of going backwards anyway because it'll be less drivable off boost than it already is.

7.0l/100km... with petrol up at $1.40, still gets me 100km for under $10  ;D  Loves the highway!!!

If I get 10l/100 city driving, I'm happy; ca20e but then again I suspect(know) I'm a more agressive driver than most

8.8 L/100km, 553km on trip meter when i put in 48.57L. (so calculated 8.78L/100km)
This tank and last are just BP 91 ULP.

Need to do a little more work on my fuel maps in closed loop cruise conditions to try and get sub 8.5.

I will have a result for you soon adam, i've started work in Melton... see what stocko' fuel economy is like with a good nick KA24E.  330km to approx 1/2 so far, but we all know U12 fuel gauges are dicky :)

8.3litres to 100km

490km - 41litres

Thats almost 90% highway, some hilly sections to Bacchus Marsh (wollpack rd) then up the cutting to Melton West.  Including the shit through Geelong in peak times as well...

I'm pretty happy with that, the car goes well on the highway!

Vehicle: 1991 holden Calais v6 ( yes i do own a Nissan but just no rego on it)
KMs: ??????
Last service: don't know only 4 weeks ago
Extra weight: Sub woofer/amp/ cap 3 people
Mods: ported polished cheap n nasty  $30 pod filter e.p performance exhaust
Fuel:  bp 98% unleaded
Driving type: 50% highway, 50% city
Driving style: moderate, sometimes hoon aka fast take offs  day to day driving
Tyre pressure: 38 PSI
Aircon/window usage: Not that much only hot days
Cruise control: only used on long trips
i found the bp 98 unleaded  lasts twice as long as normal unleaded and  91 unleaded also cleans the fuel pump  fuel injectors and also noticed a slight increase of power. might be a bit dear but worth it as it lasts  twice as long

8.5litres to 100km

560km - 48.1 litres

To melton and back, also into the city ... yarravile during peak time, then back with 5 mates after the cricket friday night... car being driven by another mate who's not used to my car :)

AC on maybe 20-30% of the time

Well, sice we're so into saving fuel and money, I've started running my Corsair on LPG. The last tank got me 490KM on just over 43 litres or 8.775L/100km. Thats almost all city driving to work in Carlton and back each day, stop start driving. No aircon used because I need a new coolant compressor. Each tank I've measured over the last couple of months has done between 470 and 520 km (the highest being on a trip to broken hill and the lowest being stuck in peak hour traffic every day for a week). Thats an economy only very slightly worse than petrol, but with LPG at less than half the price per liter, sometimes around 1/3rd, its a really big saving.

I hardly notice the difference in power, and I can always switch to nice high-octane petrol when I need some extra exceleration. It also runs more evenly on the gas than it does on petrol.

There's always the weight of the gas tank to consider, but at least its located right between the back wheels, and its offset to some extent by only having the petrol tank at less than 1/4 full most of the time.

Just wanted to know, has anyone else considered makeing tha switch? I'd recomend it, as it saves me a lot of money and the cost of the conversion was mostly covered by a government grant.

578km to approx... 53 litres

Someone else used the pump (on the opposite side) before I could take note of the exact litres.  Fuel econ is bad'ish due to me hammering the car around on the weekend...

Am using a tank now, of 95 octane 'United Plus' petrol (10% ethanol) which was 4cpl cheaper than other unleaded...  Have taken off the spoiler.  Will see how this tank goes!

An overdue update...

My cars been returning 10 litres to 100km or worse (almost all highway) so I was getting pissed off.  Its also always idled at 1000rpm, no matter what I did with the idle adjustment.

Last weekend I put the ECU into diagnostic mode (never done it on the TRX before).  Re-started her and the idle is dead on 850rpm as it should be and shes back to returning 8.5litres to 100km.

Last tank, tonight... put 51litres into the car for 595km (all through geelong, out the bacchus marsh rd and then to Melton).  So approx 80% highway 20% city.

Gotta love the TRX, I wasn't going to fix its timing chain but I am now.  Love this car :) 256,000km on the ODO now.

i got my best last week. Only 2nd tank after new clutch went in.
did 535kms on 1 tank of regular unleaded, from a 60L tank. Fuel light was on for some time.
535/55=9.72L/kms ( althou not 100% on how much fuel went in, i know it was more then 50L and cost me $72.92 )

Filled up with Shell Premium, have driven 265km and has used half a tank. The whole time the climate control was on though, so will compare this when I refill again and drive without it on eh.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Kranzy on Sep 9, 2008, 06:13PM
When you say climate control are you talking about air con? Air con should be the only thing that effects economy.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Habibosaurus on Sep 9, 2008, 06:34PM
Yeah Air Con on the whole time, I actually want to see how big the difference will be without it on... I know there is one but wanna see how significant.

Also because its the first time owning the car have I had the Air con working as well... fark it works well in regulating the temps... 8)

Oh and so far most of the driving has been Brisbane City to Gold Coast and vice versa.
Title: Re: Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Post by: Habibosaurus on Sep 13, 2008, 08:53PM
Okay was just about on empty, reckon I could have got another 10km so the total was 400km. Half was highway, half was suburbia.

I have just filled up again with Shell Premium and intend to see how big the difference without Air con has. Mind you most of it will be suburbia driving. So far have done 10km.

Experiment - Fuel Efficiency
Vehicle: 1991 Nissan Pintara T.I Supermtfhatch
KMs: ~ About off the top of my head 170800
Last service: ~Month ago
Extra weight: Budgie's Cellulite
Mods: I know its stupid and will be rectifying it soon with proper CAI but I have a pod...in the engine bay... :o
Fuel: Used to use Shell Racing (never looked at the mileage but I remember when I first got the car I think it go like 250km lol, after a few full tanks easy 400+
Driving type: In this instance prob 50% Highway, 50% Suburbia
Driving style: very sedate, occasional quick take off at the lights.
Tyre pressure: 36PSI
Aircon/window usage: None as per above post had mentioned, earlier had gotten around 400km with air con on constantly, now I am driving without it on and with one window down... the passengers as mine is a bit temperamental...
Cruise control: Used but and I know it sounds weird but I swear it chews more with it on.. will have to somehow measure that one.

Now that is out of the way, previously when I got 400km, it roughly meant for every 1/4 of petrol I had used, I had driven 100km.

As this pic shows (taken yesterday), for the 1st 1/4 I got around 176km.

As the next pic shows Near half the tank is gone and I have driven almost 260km...

At this stage I had a few passengers and did take off quickly a few times.

With this in mind I reckon easy 500km pass, prob if I play my cards right 550... will try to push for 600km lol.

It also signifies the effects of air con on fuel consumption (which is obvious) and while it doesn't take any of the power of the car... thank you KA it nevertheless is something to consider.

Updates soon stooges....  8) 8)

i thought i would imput my incredible figures, i look at it closely as its an indicator that something might be wrong and plus it might have a leak....( only some of the time which is wierd), and trip computer may be out of whack a bit, averaged odo and trip meter, they are about 10 kms out from each other

u13 sss

weight:extractors, 2.5 cat back 14 gauge, 17"s (and heavy ones at that), 12" sub, 2 tyres in boot

505kms off 48.8 L- 80% city( bumper to bumper) 20% at 140km on highway, driving was irratic
=9.66 L/100
616 off 52.3L- all highway except for a few town stops, quick launches onto highway, 1 extra person
=8.49 L/100
632 off 46 ish L- way home, very hungover, fearing cops, very sedate eg. sat at 2200 all the way in 5, not one downshift on the highway, no overtaking, no stops
=7.28L/100

my blueys was in pristine condition before i got it, 1 owner, logs, service every 5k, 161000km, manual

First real figures for my U13 SSS.

340km - 22.5litres (I fill it until it clicks off, then squeeze in another 1.5litres every time)

6.6litres to 100km !!!  Normal unleaded.  Thats almost 75% highway, great ocean road (!) with A/C on alot!!

Bloody amazing fuel consumption figures! Loving the KA24DE!

getting about 13.5L/100km in the VE, about 70% highway. That is LPG too btw.
