Title: Power Steering.
Post by: FLOGTARA on Mar 16, 2005, 02:04PM
My power steering motor is playin up real bad (ie.. wrenching the steering to the right or left by itself) *scary stuff*

PLus my hoses are all old and leaking oil everywhere.  I've only noticed this lately and have kept a close eye on the oil level.  Which goes down every time i drive it.

Question???  Can i simply disconnent the powersteering motor, take the belt off and just run normal unassisted steering???

Or am i completely barkin up the wrong tree???

Thanks blokes...

Ben was telling me there is something like different gear ratio's or something that have to be changed if i wish to run steering without the power steering??

Any one got ideas on how much powersteering hoses r? I'm thinkin expensive?...

cost me about $90 to get a high pressure hose made up at a local hydraulics place.  Go see Enzed/pirtek or any hydraulics shop and see if they can make  one for you, it's much cheaper than buying one off the shelf at Nissan or repco etc.

My power steering rack was leaking at one point when i was building my car...so i never filled it up and ran it as manual steering until i had the money for a new rack. Your cars may have a different set up so im not suggesting its ok...just saying that i have done it with little problems.

I got a good high pressure hose from the wreckers for $65(with 90day warranty) 4 months ago(still good).

However for erratic steering - check ball joints, tie rods, bushes, bolts, steering freeplay etc.- jack up front, holding each side of tyre, move it back and forth to check. Hold top and bottom of tyre and move to check wheel bearing play. If a joint is really bad, it should be easy to find.

yeah it should proberly work yet it wont feel the same as a pinny with a manual rack, well i'm 90% sure of that as noreraly the ratios are differnt

If you disconnect the power steering, it will be extremely hard to steer at low speed.

yeah, the gt ho had manual ratios and no power, for quick stearing that you can feel on the road, though only problem was around town you vertually had to lift it around corner
