I want Cupholders!! :(
Well, theres no other way to say it. Being an interior thing I guess this is the right place to ask, so... I'm not sure what to get or where, everything I've seen is just not suitable - they're way too small and shallow, pretty much useless! I'd also like to integrate them as permanent things. I saw some somewhere that were retractable too, something like that would be awesome!
But I don't know where to start!! Arhh, help me! I need to put my slurpees somewhere :(

i have a super cheap one sitting infront of my centre vents with the air on it keeps a drink mighty cold and if you dont whant to much air in the car just turn off the other vents so the on that is on is on the drink works a treat.

I've looked at those things, stuff from supercheap and all .. not what I want, at least from what they stocked. Things are either too narrow, something that'll hold a can maybe but nothing larger, or too shallow - anything large will just fall out around a corner.
I can't really find anything more suitable. I've looked around a few places, there is shit all.
Maybe I could nick some from another car which comes with decent cupholders, I could go to the wreckers and find something there? What cars should I look at etc?

i reckon you could maybe bolt in some cup holders into the end of the centre console, the bit that hols crap. it might not look any good but it should work

I'm actually thinking pop-out ones would be awesome. Recent Subaru Libertys have them, as does the VY Calais. I'm going to be gathering some opinions / check out the VY's for myself and see if I can get some from Subaru/Holden/whoever depending on whose I like.
A good install might be the side parts of the dash which goes against the door when shut, they are pretty hollow. But they slope downwards pretty heavily so it mightn't work, maybe I can do it in the doors somehow.

Some newish hyundais have pop-out cupholders too. Hell, its probably the best engineered part of the car :P

..... and I'm still using the same OEM cupholders from my P10 some 8yrs ago in the U12... yes, they're shallow, and are practically useless for anything short of a J-turn maneuver other than for storing the cigs and lights...

id look at sticking something in your glove box (the one behind the hand brake) maybe a bracket of some sort sitting in there with a hole in the top

Thats where I've been putting drinks at the moment, in the centre compartment thingi. Waay to inconvinient because its a bitch to take the drink out and put it back in. Also large cups dont allow the lid to close completly which annoys the hell out of me because I have to bend my arm awkwardly when I go to use the handbrake / gearstick.
I'd much rather something that is in front of me rather than behind me.
I took a look at the VY Calais and the cupholders aren't so bad. A bit shallow for large cups (Maccas, slurpees etc) but they do have rubbery things which hold things in quite firmly, so I will investigate the dash to see if I can fit them and maybe contact Holden to see if they sell them as seperate parts. An alternative I thought of was to put some kind of Rings in the doors (Which fold up) and the bottom of the cup sits on the front plastic part of the armrest.

I have considered that, and yes I could. I do think some other cars (Camry's, Hilux's) have cupholders that go there? I'm not sure which cars though. Also the wrecker Pick n Payless (cough, more) here are pretty fkn big and very closeby however they dont let general people near recent cars since too many dickheads deliberatly go breaking stuff, so, getting to the cars to nick the cupholders could be a problem.. As for making anything custom, well, I'm not sure how to go about that....
Thing is, with EVERY mod I do I want to have as little negative effect on practicality as possible. Blocking up the radio, ashtray, centre console bit etc, I'd rather try better alternatives first.

yeah the pintaras have nowhere to stick cups :( I used to jam my maccas coke between the centre console and the passenger seat, far from practical....

Yeah, those VY ones have been on Saabs for ages. We have the cup holder comp at each Melbourne motor show and saab has won every year, expect for last year when rover won. :)

Would it be possible to buy these Saab-styled cupholders anywhere? As parts from Saab or Holden or whoever? Or are there any good aftermarket ones + where would they be found?

My cars got quite a lot of features for its age .. and then I find the lower models dont have tacho's or power anything or even a LID!?! Sheeesssh!!
Anyway I got the length of the VY cupholders (The position they would be in when closed in the dash) and they are around 9.8cm long. I inspected my dash and either side of the radio there is a nice gap which should be deep enough to house the cupholders! So I might ring Holden up during the week to see if I can pick them up as parts, and see about installing them! Yay!

My mum's Toyota Avalon has pop-out cupholders too, they are awesome and have come in handy on numerous ocassions. In the trx, i just put the drink between my legs and hold it. ::)

I just get a passenger to hold it, or I drive one handed eheh, changing gers on straight lengths of road.
Does anyone know of any cars pre-1992 that have good cupholders?

not sure about pre 92 but why not look at R32's or R33's i think one of those has cupholders and the r32's are pretty similar to our cars interior wise (well if our cars were 2 door) well any way you get my drift

my pinny exec doesnt have a lid on the center concole, no tacho, etc. i always stick me drink in the center at the back. its not in me way and it doesnt slide around much..... handy....... sometimes though i wish i had a fancy shmance console with a lid........... :-\

Sheesh, there must be quite some variance between the low and high end pinnies/corsairs!
I dont mean to brag but, My Ghia has power windows, power mirrors, steering, the upper KA24E engine, central locking, it had an alarm with it (That broke though), fold down seats, the clock, tacho, towing accessories, a Lid.... Pretty much everything you'd find in a much younger car. Mind you we bought it ex-demo, so the car was probably decked out from the dealer to impress :P
..But alas, no cupholders ... yet! I might ring Holden parts soon...

yeah but isnt ghia like totally upper class or something? meh. the only thing power on mine is the steering. no central locking, no cruise control, my locks are weird too. i cant unlock the passenger door from the outside and i cant lock the drivers door with out the key. you get used to it though. but yeah, prety dull for an executive model vehicle.

"Executive" is just a nice way of saying its the base car.. Commodore "Executives" and such are all the most basic, bland cars... Its unfortunatly just a selling point.
Ghia's are are basically the Ti, which is the top of all the Pintaras, (With the exception of the TRX which is leaning towards sport and not luxury). Just without Limited Slip Diff. (I think thats all) :( I want to fit LSD to my car. (Or better, AWD)

Got Air Con, but no foglights (Corsairs don't even have the spots in the bumper, remember :(), nor cruise control ... I wouldn't mind cruise control though.. Could I retrofit that too, with LSD? ;D
And the arial too. Mines non-elec, but buggered anyway!!

i've got power stearing but it was an optional extra, so lankfuly the person that bought it got it, oh and the Brown interor........ but the old owner got central remote locking/imoberlizers, oh and i got no aircon

Climate control aircon rake... thats what the Ti's have, not just the A/C on off button.
I remember chucky wanted to fit the cruise off a Ti to his Ghia once, i think he figured it was too hard and didn't bother.

what about getting tech and making ur centre console near the handbrake into a esky ;) keep ur drink cold and its big enough to hold a slurpee cup

Either way I have a little peltier fridge which'll keep 6 cans cold for cruises :) Also installed a second ciggerette socket so I can power two things at once!

Actually, the TRX didn't have electric windows, cruise control or electric aerial.
Series 2 has power mirrors... But I think they had to be careful on the weight thing because they added the weight of the kit. *shrugs* I know there is a weight difference, cant remember it off the top of my head.
But yeah... I been thinking about stealing cruise control off a Ti for mine *lol* I need it to avoid speeding fines. :)

Things I'd like to take from a Ti or TRX:
- Limited Slip Diff
- The better airconditioning control, perhaps
- Cruise Control
- Foglights + Front bar
- Electrical Arial
Hmm, can't think of much else for now but thats all for a diffrent thread anyway.
Budgie's HNU12 has factory cupholders in place of the empty thing below the headunit slot is! Arg .. must steal. Maybe I can get it as a part from somewhere?
In the meantime, I have discovered that a Maccas cup tray squeezes in very comfortably into that empty slot, and it seems to hold cups quite firmly. Even though they are more shallow than what I originally thought would be suitable, and made of cardboard too, haha! Still looking for a better, mroe pernament solution though.

trx doesnt have climate control, doesnt have cruise control and doesnt hae electric aerial. the models that have an electric aerial dont have their aerials iin the same location as the manual arials (a pillar) the electric ones are located on the rear quarter panel.

The Pintara Ti is actually looking like a better car to get things from, as the TRX seems to lack all of these things .. But to my understanding, all of those things - power mirrors, windows, arial, cruise control etc could be optioned into the TRX? Hmm.

i think they could be but never were. check the brochures that budgie uploaded in the faq section.. i think he has an article in the tech section too.

yeah, I looked through the brochure before, hence why I said what I did :P .. I wouldn't say that those things were never optioned into the TRX, its just a matter of finding a TRX where the first owner has had the things installed.

*shrugs* I'm happy with my aerial, air con, fog lights etc... I'd like cruise control but I'm not annoyed that dad didn't get it as an option... I dont think he was offered a choice. But whatever.
As for cost, I did investigate the cost of the unit from a wrecker a while back but lost that notebook. I'll call up and find out. *lol* I know that we sell cruise control and power windows and stuff at work, but dunno how much they would be to get installed. I'll get prices tomorrow on units.

Cruise was not an option on the Ti, nor was power windows. Both were standard Ti equiptment and thats it.
A sunroof was an option though :P

There was the Ti at the wrecker. I stole the cruise control button, but thats all so far :p something like that might be more difficult to take out though so it might not be something that's easily taken like, heh, a button :P

Don't like or trust those .. I don't know, they just don't seem like they'd be able to stop a litre of slurpee from ending up all over my pants and interior.

No, that's like... generic cruise control kit. i guess i could see if we can get stuff from nissan but i doubt they'd still have any.
ring a couple of wreckers or even a place like all-jap and ask their prices. I've gotten some good info by ringing around like 6 different places and asking. ;)

I know the Ti at the nearby wrecker has cruise control. As long as someone else already hasn't, I could take it. Problem is, I don't know how it works or anything, how to remove it from the Ti nor install it into my car... Might see if theres anything in the factory service manual

Generic super cheap cruise control kit is $199.00 - But I have no idea how much it'd be to get installed (or how hard) or even if it'd fit. Just pulled out a price today, will look into it more if you want me to. *shrugs*

Nah, it's cool - Thanks anyway :) I feel $200 could be better spent though, and it's not money I have. I won't bother unless I can get a proper one methinks, as I've outlined theres plenty of other things I'd like to get from a Ti/TRX, mightaswell just do it all at once.

why dont you ring nissan for a price? although i doubt they'd have them anymore.
also thats cheap for cruise control. my ex girlfriend enquired abotu getting me cruise control and it was $300 supplied. that was about 4 or 5 years ago.

If they wanted $67 for an Oil Sender, I'd hate to see what they would charge for Cruise Control. Though I guess it can't hurt to ask..

Woot, update time! It's been a little while.
Since nothing seemed to suit, I decided to get the factory U12 bluebird cupholders. A HUGE thankyou to sicknx, who sold me the one from his front halfcut :)
The large one fits a big slurpee cup perfectly, so I can tell I am going to be using these extensivly. ;D They seem to be much less flimsy than the kind of thing you buy at supercheap, plus they look as though they were made for the car. And it'll be using what is otherwise wasted space (Under the headunit), which is great. I don't like the idea of putting those shallow things on my airvents, or the like. Plus it's got the tray, bonus!
I am having trouble installing these - as there is nothing to secure them to. Theres going to be some cutting of plastics and such, and I will need to get another headunit mounting bracket from the wreckers, I think I'll try turning one of these upside down, screwing it in, and hoping it works.

I estimate this mod will shave around 5 seconds off quater mile times .. because I'll be able to change gears again! :P

Wouldn't it fit just below your headunit, in the spare DIN pocket? after removing the original pocket that is...?
That could explain why there is nothing to mount it with, and the screw on each side would be used to hold it in there by adjusting the pressure applied to the inside of the dash, if that makes any sense.

It isn't quite that easy I'm afraid.
The Cupholder/Tray assembly is pretty much the same size as a radio. Screw holes and all in the same places, so it would fit into the same metal bracket thing which you would use to secure a HU into the car. However there is only 1 which is being used by my current cd player - not a second one underneath.
The existing black plastic is like, glued in (quite well at that) to the rest of the dash fascia panel, and differs in size (both height and width) a bit, and it isn't very deep, so it's by not means suitable to screw into.

The bluebirds have a bracket that holds the HU and the cup holder into that area with four screws further back, two on the left and two on the right (above each other like this).

I went down to the wreckers and got another HU bracket. Bashed and bent and snapped the top off it, as well as some other part. Drilled some holes in it and my orig one, and pop-rivetted them together. Threw in some screws and voila! It's a tad dodgy, but it seems to hold it firmly enough.
Pics are coming sooner or later .. but for now I'm gonna go pack up the tools and go get a slurpee :D

I hacked up a second bracket. It works alright, but a proper one would be better I imagine. It was a bit of a bitch to fit, I had to file down some of the plastic on the fasica panel, and pop out the smooth black plastic part. It doesnt fit in perfectly well, and theres exposed indash stuff around the edge of it and the HU, but otherwise it's OK.
The cupholders work bloody well. I had a large and a small slurpee in the appropriate spots. Normal and harsh acceleration, braking and cornering and the cups stayed right where I put them :) About the best cupholders I've seen yet! Very happy :)

go to wreckers and pickup hilux cupholders, they are sweet got a pair in my gl fibreglassed them under the air vent.

Lack of good cupholders gets my goose as well. Usually I just seatbelt in my larger drinks on the passenger side. Tried the ones from the G20 (I think), the ones that fit right under the H/U... just not big enough.
