Title: Custom Door Trims
Post by: BoGAn on Jun 11, 2004, 02:59PM
Ive done a bit of looking through old threads and i've decided to redo my trims in a few weeks. What im after is a supplier for the vinyl. Does anyone know a good place in SE Melb??

Go to your local automotive trimer they have the best range and best prices and all their stuff is uv protected unlike you stuff from sotlight and other stores. And they wil most likey be happy to sell it to you and give you some tips.

if it's thin vinyl go to the hobby store, look for model aircraft coverings.. they're pretty durable and pretty hard to fade under UV. Some of them comes with ironable glue backing.. basically set it on the area to be covered and use an iron at medium to low seting to activate the glue. if you use heat gun or even warm oven mitten, you can follow the panel's contour perfectly. Certain few has fabric grain, some other have carbon fibre and kevlar pattern, neat stuff. Any colour from metallic to solid, glossy to matte finish.

otherwise i just redid my door panels with some thicker vinyl from one of the girlie store, said auto grade on the label...so not expecting it to fade anytime soon. available in most interior colours.

there are a fair few down here, so there must be some in victoria :)

http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/performSearch.do?headingCode=25224&location=2&businessType=automotive+trimmers&emailOnly=false&previousCopyPoint=false&resetCopyPoint=false&saveSearch=true&serviceArea=true&suburbList=&websiteOnly=false

(dont know if that link will work as its so big, but just go to yellowpages and search for automotive trimmers in your area)

by the way spotlight didnt seem to have much colour choice and i didnt like the quality of their stuff.

also dont forget to put thin foam underneath the vinyl ;)

I did mine myself with $6 fabric from the local department store and paint. I dont suggest the paint cause it will fade out but it only cost me like a $1 so i didn't really care.

There's a place in ringwood on maroondah hwy, just past car city on the left as u're heading out towards Lilydale. It's in a group of factories Top bloke and has everything there you'll need.  Cheap too!

All doneĀ  8)

Will post picks sometime whenever i get my hands on a digi camera, or u can see em at the next melb cruise. Front doors are orange with original blacky-grey top and bottom parts put back on and rear doors are orange with original top and some mdf covered with black vinyl on the bottom up the side. Also did the ceiling in black and the surrounding trim in orange. Might do the centre console and some of the dash area sometime, but ive run out of vinyl and cant be bothered going back to vyfab in moorabbin at the moment.

Took a couple of days to do it all. Most of last weekend and a few hours here and there on nights when I wasnt working. My car reeks of glue fumes tho.

On a side note, nisscar wreckers are just around the corner from vyfab and i also picked up a new cornering lamp for $25 and the side trx plate on the rear door for $33, though i did need to get it painted ($40). This was really cheap as i had been quoted $55 for the light and $70 for the plate at other places. So if your after parts, try these blokes out. Another thing, while on the ringer a pinara-skyline specialist wrecker (not sure of name, but its obvious in the yellow pages) in bayswater said they have a whole trx bodykit. This was a couple weeks back and im not sure how reliable this info is but its worth checking out if u want a bodykit or parts of the kit.

well ill be helping a mate do his van doors sometime in the near future, so i can take some photos of that. Its really quite easy, just time consuming.

On a side note, does anyone know if any u12s came out with black sunvisors and black handle thingys for clothes above the doors?? My ceiling is now black and the grey fittings look a bit dodgy

Hey Bogan, do you think it would be possible to re-trim the top section of the front doors?  The black part that runs along the top with the door lock in it?

Budginator It is possible to retrim the top bit where the door locks are ive done mine in blue on my silver trx and done it black in the red one.

Yep sure is budge. I did one of the rear door tops in orange when I had a different colour scheme in mind. the colour setup looked crap, so i changed it back to stock. It is a slight pain in the ass as you have to take off the part that butts up to the window glass and its a bastard to get back on right. Min isnt, and the window is now hadreder to wind down, but I dont sit in the back so it doesnt worry me :P

just out of interest how did you attach the vinyl on the back of the door panels?
staples and glue or just glue?

i used spray on glue and staples to do mine.  You can buy a staple gun for around $20 at Bunnings if you havent already got one

Post by: BoGAn on Jul 22, 2004, 03:21PM
I got some wonderful smelly stuff called brush contact. comes in a paint tin, about $10 per litre. I did try staples but have a pissy little staple gun that wouldnt go into the pathetic masonite panel. I could only properly staple the roof, which I need to fix. Ill include that in the writeup ill do on trims. Expect that in the next few weeks. A staple gun would be handy if you plan to do the top of the door trims too, to put the piece that butts up to the window back. I just left mine stock.

BTW, you dont need to glue the entire piece of vinyl to the panel. Just the edges where it folds over to the back. gives it that nice smooth stretched look. The roof needs to be fully glued for obvious reasons and you can see on close inspection that the finish is nowhere near as smooth as the doors.
