How's it going guys.
Just got a general question. The other day I pulled out my thermostat, I drilled two holes in it and I tested to see if it worked by boiling water in a kettle and it opened up slightly. After putting it back into the car, I noticed the temperature gage still crept over the middle line. What I wanted to know if this is a common problem with Pintara's 2.4L? Also my Air conditioner switches off on its own when I'm driving and I rev it over 3,000 rpm, has anyone had this problem before?

The AC should be switching off at high engine loads... but not at 3000rpm I don't think.
It does in my bluebird (CA18DET) at around 4500rpm and a high throttle opening.

Do you think it has something to do with my car over heating?, yesterday i was on the freeway and i had the air con on and it was working until i had to take over someone

umm, flush your radiator until the water is resonably clear and then try again with some good coolant.

try it without a thermostat for a few days. Its summer after all. If the temperature still goes way above half when you're sitting at the lights you've got something impeding flow such as a blockage or a rooted water pump.
Next time the temperature goes up and you are sure the fans are on try revving the engine to 3000 for about 20 seconds and see if the temperature drops. Also see if the heater gets hotter, if so thats the symptoms of what I've mentioned above.

thanks heaps mate i'll give it a go next week i'll take off the thermostat see how it holds up all the parts are new, waterpump and thermo and i made sure when refilling the radiator i left it running for 45min nearly to get rid of air.

Did you remove the bleed screw out of the inlet manifold? If you don't bleed the system properly you can end up with pockets of air in the head.

As Jono has said, make sure you have bled the airpockets out properly using the bleed screw.
And... Don't run it around with no thermostat for too long. If you get a hot day, running the car with no thermostat will eventually cause your car to overheat believe it or not.

what i was thinking is getting the lowest temp thermostat and one that opens a lot more than the one i have, when i tested the one i have in there already i heated up some water in a kettle and it opened up slightly although i didn't have a thermometer. now that you brought that plug to my attention i might give it a go.
i have drained out my radiator and i screw off the top hose and ran water through until it was clear, which was straight away as my radiator is has been recod with a new top tank, and new water pump and thermostat was installed not long ago , ran the car for nearly 45min and switched the temp control inside to hot until all air bubbles were gone should this do the same thing as the plug.
I've asked everyone and no one has this problem before although everyone says that on hot days it should go over alittle when running air con.

No, you will still have to open the bleed screw to purge any air pockets out of the head.
When the car is cold, remove your radiator cap and loosen the bleed screw. Start the car and with one hand on the throttle cable in the engine bay, hold the revs up a little on your car (between 2 and 3 thousand rpm, this will get the water pump working faster) and then remove the bleed screw. whilst holding the revs up there, wait for the spluttering out of the bleed hole to stop. When you have a steady flow of coolant coming out of the hole, put the screw back in and nip it up.
Done!

hey. im a fridgey by trade and im just getting around to fixing my air con. but i cant find anything on what gas the pintara has. if anyone could let us know, much appreciation

the sticker in my engine bay says 'use R134a only' looks like a factory sticker to me too.

yer thats what in most cars these days. but theres a HR12 substitute these days so i wasnt quite sure on it. but thanks for letting us know.
if theres any air con questions just post them an ill have a dig at them.

thanks heaps my car is no longer over heating, in regards to air con i really can't help you there although before i smashed my first pinny i had it refilled with some sort of gas that gas that has been banned i tell it was the best it was like i was it a freezer, try to get your hand on that stuff this new stuff they got out is sort cheap shit these days that takes for ever to cool. if i hear anything on gas type i'll let you know

i think your thinking of the r12 gas. or something similar anyway.
Very doubtfull you'll find it anywhere, or any system to use it in. Most of them would be converted to hte new r134a

The subsitute for R12 is FR12. It has no CFC's.

yer there is an R12. but that has been phased out for a very long time. the other stuff (HR12) is in a cannister by a mob called Hychill. and yes r12 makes a lot of difference in cooling compared to 134a. but r12 was killing off our atmosphere very fast. so now that i know theres a sticker saying "R134a only" i will use that cos i have that in my work van.
