Title: It goes putt putt putt
Post by: Rintaro on Dec 14, 2006, 08:22AM
Hi Guys,

Yesterday avo, my pintara exec started farting and going putt putt putt, I'd depress teh accel and there'd little power and it would putt putt. It continued this morning on my way to work but when i was stopped at lights i revved a bit and the problem seemed to clear itself. The issue doesnt sound very bad from my description but it was making the car jolt a bit when it was putting. Any ideas on what it is?

TIA

I had this problem when I washed my engine with it turned off. :-[ (I should of left it running but wasn't thinking.)

My problem was I got water into the distributor, it stopped after it dried out ( went for a drive along the freeway). I think it was because it couldn't fire properly so maybe something wrong there.

Check your rotor button (the thingy under the distributor cap)

Check it for burnt sections between the two rings.

what does the speedo have to do with it ???

sounds like an ignition or fuel delivery problem to me...

is it leaking oil anywhere, or is there 2 much oil in it? Do the revs drop more than they should when u start it?

The revs sound the same as when i first started driving it, just the car seems to vibrate a bit more, its got fuel thank you very much! It could have too much oil but when i checked it after i filled it last it was abit over half, could be leaking oil i noticed a few specks of oil on the driveway the past month. I'll check the rotor button tonight and post tomorrow. Thanks for your help guys

If the speed sensor isn't working the computer can go into limp mode which means it'll run rough over 3500rpm or so.

i think it might be your injectors arent working properly. i used to get this problem in my other car only around corners and when i booted it though.

I had a similar problem (ka24e) basically car was running on three cylinders, hence the putt putt and in my case it was the ecu that was stuffed.

So if you can get your hands on an ecu just to make sure thats not your prob, do that.

Sorry for the late reply guys, computer was busted at home and they caught me tooling around on the net at work, so i lost my priveleges :P

Anyhoo, yeah the cars buggered again. I turn it on and it sounds like a rexy. i push the gas and it sounds like a van. ive lost some power too, overtakes like a turtle. Any ideas? (remember guys, the only thing i can really do to my car is change the spark plugs :P)

The dizzy seemed ok when i looked at it. a little oily on the underside for some reason (it looked like old oil, lots of furry crap in it) but otherwise it looked fine.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm getting shitty fuel consumption too, it was like 1/4 a tank to mac fields from blacktown which for me is crap cos when i thrash it it only takes about 1/8 the tank.

2nd EDIT: When i rev the car, it likes to back fire after i lift the accelerator, never used to do it

you're getting similiar symptoms to me... (mine only does it on start up, SOMETIMES, hasn't done it in a while but it still runs different.)

it's fucking annoying.

My car did the exact same thing, and i mean EXACT. This was after i degreased and washed my engine bay and it was because the distributor cap was cracked and let water/moisture in. Me and the old man got the compressor and sprayed high pressure air into it to make it 100% dry, and it ran like a beauty STRAIGHT AWAY. So i would definately check that.

bill..100% dry.no (compressor air is moisture rich), dry enough yes.

rintaro: check your injector clips, do it with the engine ideling, when you give em a wiggle, if your engine changes it behaviour, you know where it is.

ill check the distributer again, i remember driving through a rather large puddle on cowpasture road :P

ill look at the injector clips too, but i dont know where they are... where are they?

i can smell petrol nowadays too, a few weeks ago i reversed out of teh driveway and there was alot of smoke, like there was a bushfire in the ass of my car

between throttle body and rocker cover...there will be 4 clips inline in a row. on the mrs trx they are yellow and red

I checked the injector clips, they wer fine, engine didnt cahnge when i gave em a wiggle. i was checking my spark plugs today, they were very black and had a bit of white residue, gave em a clean (except the ones on the back side, cant fukin get em out, also one had a bit of oil on it =/). I did find however that the leads going to the far left on both sides came out of the sleeves so i think both those are fuxed and not sparking. I'm gonna go super cheap 2morro and get some more leads

try cleaning the sensor clip for the engine temp

Since its a ca, id say you have a burnt rotor buddy.

Replace both the rotor button and dizzy cap, should be less than 50 bucks for the pair. That should get you going again, me thinks.

well teh cars fixed, the inlaws (god i hate em) took it to a mech and all he found was that 2 spark leads were fcuked! I was trying to tell them... i really did, bought some new leads teh day they 'stole' it when i was at work. BASTARDS! Although the bonus is that the car runs better than when i first got it, it purrs nicely now, well for an exec anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, its very much appreciated! Now its time to start re trimming the roof when i get some bloody time, babies  like to steal mine, time that is.
