RWD KA24DE turbo setup for Datsun 1600.
« on: Jan 1, 2014, 01:42PM »
I have just purchased a 1986 Datsun 1600 project car. It came with a Ca18det in a rolling shell not finished but i would like to put a KA24DE in it and turbo it.

I've been looking at getting a d22 navara and swaping full wiring harness and transmission into it. I've been looking on Us forums about turboing the KA but it all seems to be on the 240sx KA. Does anyone know if there are any differences between the Aus delivered KA in the navara and the 240sx KA  other then the inlet manifold ?

I was thinking a gt35r with 0.63 housing on it and some BC cams some rods and pistons and Ebay inlet manifold and turbo mani for it. And possibly use Nistune for the ecu if it will work with the navara ecu.

But im open to suggestions looking to get deep into the 11s with it shouldn't be to hard it only ways 900-1000kg.

The us and aAussie ka24de are the same and Iwould assume the navara would be the same as the 240sx engine
And you should even be able to use a turbo kit for a 240 with minor modifications of the piping etc but manifolds should be the same

are you going to register it for on road use? if so you may need to check with the transport office, i know in qld theres a engine cc"s to weight scale. i think a 1000kg was just under 2000cc??? something like that.

Yeah i will be getting it registered. The rule is 2.5cc per kg for cars under 1000kg. The RTA has the 1600's weight as 952kg so it works out to be 2380cc the KA24de is 2389cc so it is 9cc over after talking to the tech people at the rta the ultimate decision comes down to the engineer signing it off. I have to wait until the end of jan for him to come back from holidays and ask him if he will pass it. He should i have used him a couple of times.

I'm guessing you have a KA24DE for cheap or accessible. A lot of guys have done SR20DETs in 1600's. Generally it would be an easier choice to do an SR20DET. More choice of parts, more knowledge on install, more tuning knowledge worldwide on the SR motors than KA24. Just a suggestion though. Just allow yourself plenty of time. Almost 3 years after I purchased Dano's car (it was maybe 90% complete on purchase to what I wanted) and I'm still working on it although I have taken a few months off. It takes a lot longer then you will estimate. Just a heads up. The body and paint look in very good condition!

No i dont have one cheap or accessible i could just keep the ca18det thats in it. But i want to have something different in it every dato show you go to every second one has an sr20. The KA is a very capable motor and it has one thing going for it that the SR is lacking Torque !
My dream would be to put a 1jz in it but i cant be regoed.

Your engineer won't have an issue mate. They would have to be a bit special to knock it back over 9cc.

S13/14 240 stuff should be fine for a 1600, from what i remember the oil pump / distributor & CAS are both in the same place on both motors.
