1997 N15 Pulsar (too many Km's?)
« on: Jun 21, 2004, 01:08PM »
Is 193,000 kilometres for a 1997 LX 1.6 Pulsar which otherwise is in good nick too much.

They want $6,250 w/out a warranty but with a 118 point inspection by motacheck or 6,750 w/ the motacheck and 3 months 5,000 km's warranty.

What should I look for to tell the thing is not going to cost me thousands in under a year (20,000 kilometres) time?

Cheers if you can help. Oh and it's South Australia where i'm buying it.

Well, those Km's are VERY high, a good guide is 20 thou a year.

Yep, make sure you sight the service records, if its been well looked after then it would be worth it...is it one owner??

You are in SA right?? whats a motocheck?? ive never heard of it, is it the Raa??
Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?

thats 27,000 a year. in all reality that isnt too much when looked at it that way. some people drive more than others, it doesnt really mean the car will fall apart. if the kms are mostly highway driving (if you can find out at all) then the engine wouldnt have been under as much stress as if it were city driving.

just get your mechanic to give it a good check over before you buy it to see what his opinion is on it. if the person/yard selling it wont let you do that, then there must be something up.

when i first got my car, i drove from melbourne to brisbane 7 times within the first 2 years and to sydney twice. i drove more than 50,000kms in my trx the first year i had it, they were mostly highway kms. these days i'm lucky to drive it 8000km a year.

As long as its been properly serviced it will be very reliable. I think the engine use a timing chain but if not try to get the cost of timing belt replacement taken off the purchase price becuase it will need doing with a year and can be a big job. One other to note is that the pulsar is an unsafe car. It only gets 1 star out of 4, with a drivers airbag it goes upto 2 out of 4.

motocheck is an independant company that do used car checking. sorta liek raa but inderpendant, cheaper and better. RAA are pricks.

Yes ur stupid not to get a motocheck on it but i dunni those kays sound way too high for me personally

why do people have a problem with kms? i dont understand it really. sure it means the car has been used longer, but it means bugger all if the car has been looked after.

It can also mean that the trips taken in the car were longer than average (ie. country driving). This means that the engine would get up to opertaing temperature most trips which is better for it.

its a relatively new car and 192k isnt that much my old man got a u12 like 3-4 years ago with 150k on it and absoulaatly nothing has gone wrong (cept g/box) its now aproaching 240k and hasnt had its belt changed once, it travels 60ks a day and most of that is done on unsealed roads so yeah a 97  mod car will be cool look for general sign of wear and use your common sense and youll be right
whats your budget? if its bothering you that much get a n14 with low k's

pulsars unsafe? compared ro what ? itd be safer than my car, if you dont crash you dont need to worry

Well no one plans to have a crash, they just happen, that is why they are called accidents.

The N15 is unsafe compared to other cars of the same age in it's class. For example the Corolla, Civic, 323/Laser and Mirage are all safer than the Pulsar.  Even the Echo gets a better score.

No offence, but that is just plain stupid.

Homer!  What have you done to the car?  I don't think it had broken axles before.

Before!  Before!  You're living in the past, Marge.  Quit living in the past.

What, I never said I didn't like it asshat! :P

At least I don't think I did... but if I did, then I'm the asshat.

I agree, your timing belt should be done every 100,000k/s at a minimum.  Timing chains in the KA24E seems to get a bit dicey around the 200,000 mark.

Mine was done at 97,000 again at 160,000 and again at 203,000 when I got the water pump replaced.

When I bought my car it had high'ish kilometres but almost all of them done on the highway out around Colac, travelling at a low rpm with alot of air being pushed through the radiator.  I think if the car has been correctly looked after all its life, you'll be fine.

The timing belts will last 150,000 km, they are designed to because of people who do not do maintinace. However it is recomended to change them every 100,000 just to be safe. When I got my car the timing belt had sliped a couple of teeth and had really old spark plugs, thus run like shit, this is how I got it for only $1000. Reaplced the timing belt, plugs, filters etc and it runs sweet.
