My new Pintara
« on: Sep 10, 2005, 11:25AM »
Hi all,  I bought a 92 Pintara GLi with 2.0 litre engine 8 days ago not because i was interested in a Pintara b ut more out of the need to get a car quickly, you see i have a Nissan Terrano (Diesel version of Pathfinder), and coming home last thursday nite week from my daughters school fathers day event and still 170km from home the trans in the Terrano died, so i got into Bunbury next morning and decided i needed a car to get me around while fixing the Terrano, i have  list of things i want to do to the Terrano so good time to get em done ,,, any way i had a budjet of up to 3 grand and thoght a commodorre would do, so looking around and couldnt find any good looking commodorres for that price but came across a Nissan Pintara for 3 grand in the Ford dealership, just traded, not detailed or anything, looked well looked after, nice clean motor, runs really well,,, and i must admit what a fun car to drive,,, and of course after driving it for a week i started to notice  a few things, so a few questions if i may cause i like this car and have decided to keep it, it has a nice straight body and nice clean interior..
I notice the diff is noisy at around 80 to 100 kph, not overly noisy but is noticeable,, how long do they go before the diff expires, hard question to ask i know without hearing it but some members would have an idea.?
I notice also that the fuel pump is noisy, the car goes well, but the pump is noisy, very noticable when the engine is running and even driving up to around 40 kph when the road noise drowns it out, i think i should be on the safe side and fit a new pump, or is this noise normal.?
I notice that when i use the indicators that the lights on the front outside of the vehicle come on ( the ones that look like park lights ), however the park lights are in the head lights so what is this for. i should add the dont flash they are just on.
And i noticed that the odo meter is not working but already find in the tech section the reason for this

So hi to all and what a great site, not mention a great car in the Pintara i have found all due to my trusty 4wd breaking down ( i say trusty because i have it for 4 years and has hi km on it and the trans was always expected by me to be the 1st thing to go)

Welcome aboard GreenBushy,

In answer to your queries, the lights that come on when your indicator is on are called "cornering lights" these only work if your main headlights are on, and are meant to help you see the corner you are turning into.

The odometer not working or 'sticking' is a fairly common problem, there isn't an easy fix short of taking the cluster out and replacing stuff.

With the pump, I can't really help you there, perhaps other members can.

Welcome Greenbushy!

The CA20s are a durable engine compared to most other cheap cars around. The driveline isn't bad either. Is yours an auto or manual and how many km has it done? Check the diff/gearbox oil if it is a manual, if it's been run with low oil the gears can get noisy from wear.

The odometer is a pretty straightforward fix, there's just a bit of work in getting the dash cluster out. I wrote the tech article on the odometer repairs, so if you have any questions about that, I'll be sure to help  :)

Thanks everone for the reply's,, The odo has 152460km on it but who knows when it stopped working.
To Jono, the trans is manual, and i changed the engine and transaxle oils the day after i purchased the car, since i changed the oils i have done aprox 1400 highway km and the engine oil is still the same level so i think i got a good one, with regards to trans noise its most noticeable mainly at 80 to 100 kph, can still just hear it at 120, its there either under load or on the overun, i think she'll last for quite a while yet, ive been averaging aprox 31 miles per gallon so i dont think there is too much wrong, very nice car to drive, has extractors fitted and pulls really well.
oh and by the way i have 3 nissans,, the Terrano, the Pintara and a 88 diesel Navara dual cab iam rebuilding, nothing like a shed full of projects lol.

Just a bit of update , ive done aprox 6000km since my original post and i think the whine i notice will be ok, the car certainly goes well and doesn't show any signs of a problem, maybe it could even be tyre related, they are kumho's and look like they would probably last a life time and the road noise they make Agghhh

An update on the whinning noise,  well i was starting to notice that the left hand wheel bearing was getting noisy, so i had the bearing assembly replaced and guess what the whining noise has gone, i figure the wheel bearing noise might have been travelling up the drive shaft and making it sound like it was coming from the transmission area.

mmm well ya see my problem was fixed by replacing the left front wheel bearing, iam a earthmoving plant mechanic and i don't take nothing to anybody,,  mainly i was posting this for anyone that might notice a slight whine that seems to be coming form the gearbox/diff,to check wheel brearings, noise can be deceptive and in this case the wheel bearing noise was travelling along the drive shaft to make it apear to come from the transaxle area,, also i found the only accurete way to check the wheel bearing is to remove the hub ass. and spin the hub on the bench.

Yes i do, do a lot of miles, a round trip to pick up and return my daughter every 2nd week is around 1100 km, then i had my mum staying and run her home, another 500km , then running around to organize my broken terrano 600km, 1 week of school hols  with my daughter staying 500km, quick trip to Perth and back, etc etc, and am sure glad i got the Pintarra to tide me over while the Terrano is down, in fact i love the Pintarra so much i intend to keep it...

Hey Greenbushy,
Just out of curiosity, what model Terrano have you got? My dad has a 1997 Terrano II, which aren't very common.

good luck finding a manual tranny for it, the terrano turbo diesel is a jap import model (they were never released in aust) so the parts are as rare as hens teeth... my dad has a 90 model turbo deisel as well, and he's been trwling import wreckers, classifieds... everywhere for the manual conversion... good luck with it...
