yeah it is a common prob. u got a ca20?
mine stuffed up a long time ago, and i got it looked at the repairer said:
"I can get a new manifold from japan for $600"

i said pfffffffffffffff and left :cwm32:
I then went to get extractors and 2 1/4" exhaust brand new cost me a bit over $500 installed. and i love it  ;)

I've got a 92 pintara (ca20) and mine cracked at 110 000km.  I got told then that it's a common problemb, and I also got extractors put on.  The way they found it was to decode the computer (I think I saw the info for that on this site somewhere).  what cued me in to something not being right was the car had way too much get up and bogie (taking off in 5th was the only way i could accelerate as slow as the rest of peak hour!)  the oxygen sensor was detecting too much oxygen in the exhaust and running rich to try to compensate.
I spent my money on sothern comfort and speeding fines, the rest I wasted.

mine have cracked twice, and both times I have done the dodgy and welded it up, if it cracks again, extractors...

but first, I have to replace my cat...

Mine seems to be ok...

Don't know if it's safe, good or anything but...

To check if it's cracked, I poured soapy water over my COLD exhaust manifold, then started the car, and waited for the bubbles.

Only do this cold, because that's how cast iron cracks - too quick a temperature change. cold water on hot manifold = not good

im guessing you have a leaking rocker cover gasket, i dont see why or how you would get oil on the heat shield from the exhaust..

yeah i reckon u is right there. coz i dont think their could be any other way it could get their. No it doesnt stink just coz my car is pov doesnt mean it smells. Does that mean i have to take the rocker cover off and replace the gasket? That sounds a bit too hard. How much are the gaskets worth?

couldnt tell you for your engine a ka24e one from noss is $26, but your probably better off using liquid gasket (loctite, silastic brand etc.)
just go to repco or autobarn for that stuff or a proper gasket

i reckon an rb30 would be just as easy as doing a ka24e's gasket, dont over tighten the bolts though :)

Alright no worries i'll put it on my to do list. Just had a thought would a faulty gasket cause a sort of blow-valve/induction sort of noise when you rapidly take your foot after revving it? It's most noticeable when the enignes cold it sounds kinda cool but not if its leaking out of something then it would be very not cool.

Our (Me+BenZor's) paddybasher R31 Pintara Wagon has extractors. But they're staying on until the car is well and truely rooted and destined for the wreckers :P

doesn't have to be a cold morning, just don't do it after you've been driving it. Any morning will be fine, or even before you start driving for the day.
