WORST car you have ever driven
« on: Dec 18, 2005, 03:52PM »
Following in the trend of "worst" threads, what is the worst car you have ever driven? I am not talking about your grandma's car that you have had a ride in, but a car you have driven. Tell us what was dodgy about it!

A few shockers I have driven:

My driving school car was a base model carolla hatch, like 2001 model or something, it was so gutless it couldn't even get up to 100km/h on Adelaide's slightly uphill freeway, I was amazed.

A close second is one of my workmates' Falcon, she asked me to move it during my break so that she would get a ticket, so I get in, and apart from physically not being able to fit between the steering wheel and the seat (it was that close) I pulled out to go around the block to our carpark, went for the brakes when the traffic light went red and got NOTHING! I ended up just going around the corner on a red light. I sinished parking it at walking pace and when I got back inside work i asked her "what the f*ck is with your brakes? They are crap!" and she goes "oh really, I thought they were just like that normally!" geeeeeez.

Not too dodgy I guess, but not cars I'd like to drive every day. I'm sure there are some real bombs that you guys have driven.

Another dodgy instructor car: Rav4 auto, those things weren't designed well at all!

Second one would be my mate's VS ute. Boat like suspension (would have been before IRS), uncomfortable seats and power steering that was stiff as shit.

Mitsubishi Lancer - worst by far.
For those who care, it was a 1998 CE Wagon. 1800cc Auto.

Engine was underpowered, gearbox was jerky, Seating position was crap (but it was straight, unlike the XE Falcon, where the wheel's left of the seat's middle)

Cruise control. BFW - it hunted and buzzed and thumped and wouldn't hold 100 up a hill. I ended up using the right boot cruise and ignored the stick.

Vision Australia's work cars. They're all in Magnas and 380's now.

fool

my worst car ever was my first car, although only because it was a bomb, not because i didnt like it, if that thing could talk.......

it was a 4cyl panel van, rwd 4 speed, the sun roof would leak when it rained, and the paint looked like someone had poured bitumen over it, the top speed was about 130kmh, but if you pulled the choke out, it would hit 140!!!, anyway, it was originally Ehh's mums car, and i [aid the handsome sum of $580 ( so that Ehh could get the headgasket fixed on his cordia), when i got it, the front bumper bar and metal body work bellow the bumper were smashed in, as well as the grill and front cross member, and the front control arm had a bend in it, this was from Lama (the one above), who had a little accident while trying to have bit of fun on a dirt road, and ended up putting it into a pine bollard on the side of the road.

This is how it came to its end:

My friend's Datsun 720 work ute. It had rust on the roof, the tray was primer and other parts of it was white. It was such a heavy thing to drive, with no power steering. It was lowered that much that the tyres scrubbed on the guards at half lock when turning and when it was carby the thing would just majorly flat spot when trying to take off.

It not only looked like crap, but it also sounded and went like crap!!!

My first car - *cough* colt *cough* - was also pretty horrible to drive when the clutch was pretty much dead!! And the shockies were absolutely shot. It looked really tidy, but mechanically the thing was shagged. Oh and it had started to blow smoke as all mitsu's do.

I accualy havent driven a bad car yet. (Well 1 i would think is terrible) But the worst so far would be my girlfreinds sisters car. A Hyundai Lantra. It was an auto that had done 220,000+km and it was gutless. Foot to the floor ment nothing to that car, just that it would still take its time to accelerate. Also it had massive speed wobbles (im talking like it felt like u were drifting sideways) at 70+ kmph.

But overall its what i expected from it so therefore i dont think it was that bad of a car.

I've driven plenty of cars that were just about dead, but miraculously still worked, but hey, it's all an experience.

For the record:

Mate's '84 Jackaroo 2.0L Turbo diesel.
Never looked after. Probably never had an oil change in its life, but still managed to get us up the top of Cape Yorke and back. Had some entertaining problems along the way, like the bonnet prop (which like many cars, the clip had broken so it just hung there) which on a particularly bumpy road managed to jump up, bridge the two battery terminals, subsequently burning a hole in both the battery and the radiator simultaneously. Naturally the battery caught fire and we only just managed to put it out. We then, having only a flat standby battery, clogged up the hole in the good battery with tissues. I don't know how it worked, but it did.
His: 2001 Audi S4 biturbo quattro 6sp, Nogaro Blue/black leather recaros, microsilver trim, bose 10sp, SSAC 2.5" twin turboback, RS4 rear sway, 25% tint

Hers: MY99.5 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro GP Edition AVANT 5-sp, phantom black, black leather buckets/walnut/sunroof, 2.5" D&T Turboback, K04-015, N75J, 710N DV

Bro driving: 1990 Nissan Pintara TRX 5sp Red, 16" Rozzis, Lukey 4-2-1 ext, 2.5" full exhaust, hi-flow cat, cone cai, stg 3 chip,  low Kings, GT Gas shocks, Urethane bushings, slotted front rotors, 398000k and still going strong; 0-100 in around 7.2-7.4 seconds

There's a few...

My first car, an '82 Celica. The windscreen and the tailgate leaked when it rained, something leaked above the seatbelt reels as well so they got wet when it rained. The wheel alignment was waay out. There were patches of primer all over it. If you dumped the clutch at high revs it took off the same as if you let it out gently. The bushes in the rear end were all buggered so it started shaking the back side to side over about 130km/h on the speedo which was over-reading about 12%. The front brakes stuck on after a few stops and the back tyres were bald retreads. And that was all before I crashed it.

That's after I crashed it.

The other one that comes to mind would be a mate's colt which for some reason a few of them decided to pull the engine apart when they were drunk. They got as far as pulling the rocker cover off and gave up. But anyway, his door opened onto his front guard, his door lock could be opened with a screwdriver. It was an auto and completely gutless.

One night after a few drinks someone bet me that it wouldn't drop a burnout... hehehe.. so I got the keys and reversed it down his street at about 30km/h, dropped it into drive and left 2 black marks a good 5 metres long, breaking 2 of the engine mounts. He sold it a few days later.

And there's a falcon panel van that shouldn't have been driving on the road.

A mates old KE50 1978 corolla, it was a shocker.

Also, a 2001 model KIA rio, that was almost as bad as the corolla.

My sisters 1997 Kia sportage. antenna makes terrable noise when it comes up, exauste heat shield rattles, clutch feels wered, steering is worse than boat like its more like cruseliner like, sounds horrable, sterio is possibly the worse factory sterio.

Now she has just got a Nissan Xtrail and all I can say is wow a great improvement, a 4wd that feels very nice to drive. :)

Iv also herd that lancers are bad to drive from a friend who owns 1. Not to mention the rice factor of all these lancers u see driving around little 1.8 leter engine and 200kg of bodykit.

I've driven a mate's CB lancer a couple of times and it didn't seem too bad, no power steering so it was a little heavy and the brakes were pretty average but all in all not too bad a car.

Oh and another guy I know has a Cortina that the gear linkage bushes are so worn that you can move the gearstick in about a 20cm diameter circle while it's in gear :o

I've driven a lancer and i think they are pretty good. My only fault is when you drop the gas to the floor. You get nothing....then BANG the acceleration hits ya. Almost a sadistic form of NA lag  :o.Thats in an auto though so it may be the same with all auto's  ;D

a bad car was my old mazda cappela, vynel seats that would burn you when it was hot and they were freezing when ity was cold, it had a hole in the floor were the accelerator is that the heel of my foot would keep falling into (on wet days water would splash up and wet the carpet). couldnt open the boot cause it leaked and the smell was like something died in there. on windy day it felt like it would blow away. and to start it i had to get out and give the starter motor a beating.

but the worst car ever is my mums VN station wagon. it stinks so rank in that car its not funny, she went shopping one day and the lid came off the milk and spilt all over the carpet. the drivers door lock doesnt work, the paint is peeling, the power steerning is non existant, the rubber seals on the doors come off when you open the doors, the diff makes the worst winding noise, the radio is fuzzy, it burns so much oil, and to top it off there is a dead fly sitting right near the speedo, god only knows how that got in there.

Would have to be a mates Mitsubishi Sigma, shit brown in colour, 3 speed auto that would not kick down and would scream itself silly at 80-100 clicks until second changed to third, had no roof lining, no carpet, a hole in the floor around the gear selector thing (we could throw rubbish right onto the road through that hole), and an unusual petrol smell seeping in through the boot.

We fixed the fuel smell by using an old bike inner tube to seal the boot.  It also had a hole in the exhaust that we fixed with a beer can and a coat hanger.

Someone stole it and dumped it at the end of his street, even thieves did not want this thing.

i think its a toss up between a base model single cam excel with no power steering and my mates mazda 929.. before i drove the 929 i was telling my mate to mod it to get the extra oomph he wanted, drove it on the weekend to gauge what we had to do to improve it, you plant your foot, it kicks down, the revs fly up to 5000rpm in an isntant, there is a lot of noise and you're going nowhere. otherwise it has all the creature comforts you'd ever want and is quite a nice car to get around in, but performance is ordianry.

the excel, well what can i say, it was my old bosses, it was out of alignment, no power steering, it had never been washed, there was a thick greasy film all over the windscreen which made it difficult to see, just terrible, simply terrible. it would be the perfect car if you wanted to drive a straight line slowly, but because of the poor alignment, it was a struggle to even do that.

I drove an old Kombi van at work today that had a custom 'T' bar shifter in a manual, but I couldn't find first because the linkages were so bad. And the steering wheel was HUGE! It was beautifully restored though. If you could change gears in it it'd be a great party bus :D

They're not that bad!

Mine:
- my car when i first got it, man it was a sack of shit, boat suspension, no power.....i drove it all of 5k's with the stock suspension. Wait...it still doesn't have any power :(
- VZ Exec. They might have a new quad cam V6, but they suck ass. Luckily it's being replaced with an SV8. ;D

when bagging out the Lancer, I forgot about the work Bus at Enhance IT computer recyclers.

Mitsubishi express. No guts.

Everything was shot to bits. I only ever drove it the once. Refused to drive after that.... Gearbox was so shagged you had to wait about 2 seconds before putting it in the next gear - otherwise the gate wouldn't let it in.

Brakes - shitful
steering - vague
Motor... It was a 2 litre trying to lug a van full of computers... it wasn't ever going to be a fireball.

I assume you mean cars that have somehow had the grace of god to pass inspection and be deemed 'Roadworthy'?

In that case it would actually have to go to a 1987 Toyota HiAce can that is currently owned by a friend of mine.

  • It is a rambling, rumbling pile of rust being held together via newspapers and crazy prices spray paint.
  • The motor starts on when IT wants too which is generally after the 7th attempt.
  • The lights work only when they want too, which is disconcerting as they not only turn themselves off, but on as well
  • The steering wheel may not actually be connected in any way to anything that is imitating the steering rack and front end.
  • If a front end does exist, i doubt it is anything that couldn't be repaired by a group of kindegarten kids with Paddle Pop Sticks and Clag Paste
  • At 50kmh it is not possible to stay on one course as the van has a propensity to use two lanes, with little chance of correction.
  • At 80km/h it is not possible to stay on course as you are too busy curled up in a foetal position in the back seat praying for a quick and painless death.
  • A combination of 4.5:1 Diff and water crackers masquerading as tyres make it ludicrously effective at spinning the wheels. At 1.8m high and with a centre-of-gravity somewhere near the interior lights, this makes cornering fun.
  • The brake pads, if they're there, are made of Wood, while the callipers are midgets trying really hard to slow down the disc (which, i presume is a CD of some sort) by pressing the bits of wood together over said CD.
  • The gear stick needs a passport to get from one side of the gearbox to the other.
  • The clutch works at 25% pedal but will grind with 100% pedal
  • The motor is a 2 litre Carby Fed monster with a HiClone. I doubt whether it would pull the skin off a pudding but this may also be that if you attempted said pudding skin pulling, the towbar would fall off the van.
  • The body may not actually be connected to the chassis as it seems that while cornering the body may tilt anything up to 45degrees. If connected, I doubt whether it is held down by anything more solid that rubber bands.
  • The steering wobbles, the brakes shudder and the engine ticks. this combined with the gentle sound of rusting and disintergration makes for quite a racket and passengers often wonder whether God can hear their prayers over this 'Matt Black Deathtrap Symphony'
Thats all i can think of for now. I have nicknamed the thing the Van'o'Death. it is the worst car i have ever driven and I have had paddock bashers that you had to pressurise the petrol tank by blowing into it, holding a seal and breathing through you nose, otherwise the engine would cut out.

Cheers,
Brendan

1970-ish Renault 2, which my cousin and i coverted into a convertible.   we got it for 25 euro, and got it as a birthday gag.  it had no seats, missing 1 floorboard, no front brakes, no windsheild........... so ofcourse we had to have fun.  we chopped the top, gave the fenders bmw Z3 style flares, took off all the exhaust, welded on an office chair, and wired the windshield washer fluid to the brake lights... so when you hit the brakes, the washer fluid gave straight at you past the windshield.     fun car, lasted about 3 hours, but was a hilarious gift. cheaper than a nice shirt!

Had to drive a 1996? holden barina, the roundish ones. And mad it handled like a sack of shit. Seriously, was auto so had no power as the 1.3 or what even engine it was in there couldnt move the 900kg odd car. And the worst was cornering. Had shitty cookie tires on there that had no grip and made cornering impossible. And i swear that when taking a corner the whole side of the car would hit the ground, thats how much it leaned. It was like driving a boat.

Yep I looked at barinas as a possible small car. But service costs were too high with regular maintience issues surrounding critical parts of the engine and drivetrain (timing belt at 60,000km, wtf is that?) and i also found the build quality to be sub par, interior was shocking and lacked anything resembling ergonomics, engines were just woeful, suspension would have required $2000 whiteline overhaul to make it acceptable, etc etc. The list of negatives just kept on growing. Their reliability leaves alot to be desired as well.

I found the exact same issues with the Astra a few years ago, funnily enough. Interior was much better and the car actually drove OK, but everything else was just unreasonable and pathetic compared to their Japanese competition.

when bagging out the Lancer, I forgot about the work Bus at Enhance IT computer recyclers.

Oooh did I just miss something?

I think I did, they're all mitsubishis!! lol

my brothers gen1 honda integra.  whether its because he doesn't care about it, or because he's a crap driver, this car in particular gives me the shits.

its got absolutely no guts in it watsoever, and wat doesn't help is that the auto box is fucked, and changes gears at like 1800rpm in every gear, so going up a hill without momentum, forget about it. at it clunks like a bitch.  i was sitting in the car once at a set of lights, and the car was just idling.  when it idles, the revs fluctuate between 800-1500, without touching the acclerater.  on this occasion, the gears were shifting themselves while at a stand still because the revs were fluctuating up to 1800.  thats scary when you're sitting at the lights and your car is clunking.  not to mention trying to take off in overdrive.

the steering reminds me of a daytona machine with the force-feedback thats rooted.  ie loose.  so loose, absolutely zero resistance.

he's got these crappy sheepswool seat covers which were on the car since 1988, so the whole car smells terrible, and its full of his tennis crap, so the smell is goddamn awful.  sitting in the car is hella uncomfortable (only cos i think my brother drives like a stiff), but it was obviously a j-spec, because i get a sore neck from having to stoop while sitting down.

the rearviewmirror blocks out like 1/3 of total vision, making a hugeass blindspot. massively dangerous

i hate it so much.

worst car ever driven for me was definately my friends plymouth horizon, its this little four door hatchback thing from 1988, prolly still has its original tires or something too because it likes to slide all over the road,  if the tires aren't original i know for damn sure the shocks are, because when driving on normal roads it has so much bound it bottoms out, lets not even get into going over speedbumps and dips in the road.  the only thing worse than the car itself is the fact that my friend just started driving and he sucks!  the thing probably doesn't have a heater and if it does it definately doesn't work.  the car only has highbeams, but they suck so bad they might as well be headlights.  anyway yah bad car, ...

my civic dies a lot though so yah on certain occasions my b16 swapped civic has been worse to drive, particularly when my camber kit was coming loose and my rim almost came off.  and when it decides to idle at 2 1/2 thousand rpm, or when i was driving with a broken transmission mount and my transmission dropped and exploded my brand new axle.
I have a sunroof!

1979 Mazda 323 Station Wagon... Kermit Green.

It was my first car, and worth all $500 I paid for it.

For a 1.4L motor... it could pull the car to 140..... shaking so badly it felt like it was gunna fall apart... but only downhill. Anything greater than 20degrees, and slap it in low (AUTO btw) floor it, and rocket upto 15km/h.

Steering wheel was so loose you could turn it 40degrees each way and not feel anything happen to the wheels!

Had tires on it thinner than a motor bike... never drive in the wet! I was trying to turn when it was raining off a roundabout, the car aqua-planed for about 10meters.... had to give it some serious gas to correct.... Scared the shit out of me the first time. The second and following times, i had a little fun with it!

Handbrake never really worked...

Body Rolled like it was an amusement park ride... on the straights....

So many things i dont wanna mention.

But it was my baby... and i loved it!

Ahhh i Miss you kermit, you and ur green and purple colour scheme!

The Nissubishda will live....

The worst cari  have driven, well there has been a few but one of them would be a nissan.... yes i know it pains a lot of people to say it but it was!

Its ok though, it was a Urvan.... the idol changed so frequently it was criminal!

The worst part is the Van is one of the cars that is used by car dealership, what is the deal with mechanics and having shit cars (no offence its true though...)

Well it might not be the case with all but it certainly seems to be a trend !
