Intake set up
« on: Sep 15, 2009, 10:05PM »
I dont have much of an idea of how all the intake system works, im just after people opinions and info on weither or not what ive done is suitable and if there are going to be any issues wid wat ive done... the picture will explain it all basically

ive done all this to my spare car, as i will be using it to test different things and ideas that i come up wid.

only things ive noticed thus far is the pod is a lot louder and the car isnt as keen to idle anymore
not to sure if its got a bit more go
or if fuel econ is any better havent tested them

all imput is appreciated
cheers

Mate, you do need a bit of pipe length to reduce turbulence around the MAF element, that's probably why you have a crappy idle.

would crappy idle have anything to do wid all the hoses that join up to the old intake not being connected to anything anymore???

mmmmm...

The AFM would be going mental with this setup. You need distance away from the throttle body, it's too abrupt changes for the AFM to react to.

The vacuum lines either need to be tee'd up with another vacuum source depending what is or re-installed. Pull off the vacuum line for the brake booster and try stop the car, see what happens. (no don't) Certain items are operated via engine vacuum and this can cause a mozza of shit if the vacuum is out, brake efficiency (you don't want that now do you boy? :) - brake fetish kid) is lost due to a booster barely working, FPR works off vacuum, etc.

I'd say an overall length of roughly 1m is good.

With that setup you will probably notice better throttle response and not so much torque at higher RPM.

The hose thats off looks like a crankcase vent. Basically the airflow meter is measuring an amount of air going into the engine and some is leaking out via the rings. Ive seen a certain engine idling and when removing the oil filler cap actually stall.

Really?

How does that work?

Sorry, but I just understand it as one big breather for the motor, don't see how it would cause the motor to stall.

edit:

Is this with a setup as above with the vent routing back into the intake arm before the AFM? So the intake will draw out atmospheric pressure due to the cap being off resulting in unmetered air causing the motor to stall? I still find it odd!

Crankcase blowby is not metered by the MAF, on an OE engine it is hooked up to the intake to burn any oil vapour in the blowby gases in the combustion chamber.

3" is perfect size eh.  I got some pipe from the exhaust shop and drilled in the fitting which is just a plumbing fitting from bunnings.  Probably causes a bit of turbulence just before the throttle because its a bit lumpy inside, but its got to be better than the old rubber one which self destructed.
