sr20det cam gear/timing question
« on: Aug 22, 2009, 06:43PM »
i have just got my block back from the engine shop,
now with the head and or block surfaced (depending on how much)
would cam gears be a good idea?

with less material in the gap, the crank and cams are closer together,
will this mess with the timing enough to justify installing cam gears?

with an older sr the chain dose stretch and the chain guides wear and
the tensioner takes up the slack, not to mention a hot chain will be longer than a
cold one... ;) so with that in mind.. what sort of tolerance is there?
i have a new tensioner and a chain and guides are on the way.

Dozer, i put NA cams in mine, now it is only 1.35 mm more lift but it did liven up the mid range and top end a bit made it a bit puncher out of the corners and stronger in the top, and i only paid $50 for the pair and it was good, i did also get gears, and they mainly work on the exhaust as there is more to be had there, my head is no goodthey said it will cost 400 to fix the one spot.

was chatting to a mechanic today out at the track, and yeah as i kinda thought
it is not really worth doing adjustable cam gears at this stage.

NA cams are a good way to go and they are cheap.

the cam gears would be worth while to put in now as you have the chance. you will get to the point in tuning the car that a little bit here and there on the cams may be valuable to get what you want

you just gotta know the right people and have something to barter with them.

since im a chippy and love my cars, i got to know him fairly well, he asked me to do some work for him, and havent stopped over the passed year, so in between other work i go there to extend and reno. in return i get all work on the bluey done for nothing
