Title: has anyone ever done the 'r32 rack' mod?
Post by: SleepaTi on Dec 10, 2008, 08:15PM
the r31 boys have done this to get more positive steering but yet to see anything done on the u12 so just wondering if it's worth looking into or not

Its probly gunna be the cv joints that are going to limit your steering lock. It you fit a rack to give it more travel you might shag out the cv's. Thats what rwd cars turn sharper than fwd cars, normally.

Anyone got tech pics (the dissected ones) of the steering rack/ cv assembly?

I like the idea
its very very interesting

At a glance, it looks prohibitively expensive.

R31/32 RWD
U12 FWD

R32 engine North/South
U12 engine East/West

There is a very big difference between R31 and U12 Pintaras. R31 is Skyline series based, U12 is Bluebird series based. I'm not saying that it can't be done. The difficult can be done, the impossible just takes a bit longer.

Silly question, but why exactly do you want more rack travel? You need a quicker ratio to make use of it ideally.

So you can drift longer and get bigger angle in the FWD silly

the r32 rack has a 'quicker' ratio than the u12/r31 rack hence why i'm asking

the limiter bolt on the front hub/knuckle will stop it from going beyond so i can't see the cv's getting any problems

Cheers. Don't know why i was thinking why you'd want more rack travel on a FWD!
Biggest thing would be to work out who manufactured both racks, if it's the same company, chances are you've got a good shot at interchangeability.

wtf lol, sleep do you know why people get more steering angle on the front end? for drifting.

i think you're confused with "quick-racks" such as circuit cars, who have a 180 deg lock to lock ratio. There is a company actually called qwikrack or something, they make alot of these racks for race cars. I can't see it being very useful on the street though.

i had a mate who used a quick rack in his s14 drifter, (ex rally/race driver) thuoght it would be a good idea, did not work for him.

by the look of the setup it would be a bit of work to install one as well, thats if you have the space.
our rack is on the firewall, rwd nissans it is on the front subframe.

Just a thought with Skyline racks .. RWD arguement is valid (and can allow further travel than FWDs) with regards to CVs etc, but how about the AWD skylines? They'd experience the same obstacles..

lol you guys are way off what i'm thinking about!! :o

u12 Turns of steering wheel (Lock to lock) 2.82
r32 Turns of steering wheel (Lock to lock) pretty sure it's 2.50

& yeah theres a steering lock limiter on the front hubs stopping the hub/d'shafts from
binding/rack maxing out so i dunno what u guys are smokin talking about d'shafts & shit lol
also the R31/32 racks & U12 racks bolt up the same, i have a 31 rack in mine!
