New clutch - Aftermarket HD, Nissan or 3rd party?
« on: Mar 31, 2008, 10:20AM »
Hi guys,

I want to get a new clutch for my Aussie U13 Bluey. It's pretty stock apart from a short shifter, exhaust and a POD. Apart from normal driving, I may do a couple of hillclimb in the future. Here's my question:

- Is it worth getting a HD clutch, Nissan or 3rd party clutch for the car?

- How much would the clutch cost?

Please comment based on your experience with the various clutch you've used, grip and durability. Thanks guys for the feedback.  ;D

Hey Thomas,

I had the clutch replaced in NIZ #2 when i had the engine transplant done in Dec. The mechanic told me that it was either an exedy or a 'something' industries clutch (they couldn't remember)  ::). It's just a standard clutch as my bluey is stock as a rock. Sorry i can't remember the proper name of it (care factor was nil at the time with all the hassles i was having with the engine), but i'm presuming the 'something' industry clutch is the one that i had put in. (Hoping someone else can help shed light on the name). I'm pretty sure the clutch cost me $250-270, through my mechanic, but they didn't charge any extra for fitting it as the engine was already out of the car. I think machining the flywheel was an extra $100 or so. Will check my receipt tonight.

I haven't had any problems at all with the new clutch. It is very, very light, which is great in traffic. But then again i have only had it in for 4 months, so can't really say how durable as such.

I would have let you have a drive to test it, except i have just had a deposit put on my bluey, so hopefully it will be gone by midweek.

Wow, you're really selling your Bluey. :) Thanks for the information. I'll probably give a few calls and check out the pricing of clutches.  ;D

Yep, i'm over it after having spent all this money on rebuilding the damn thing, it's time to try to recoup some of my losses. Especially now that i've got a house and the associated mortgage, it's a bit hard paying two lots of rego, insurance and maintenance.
Still deciding whether to keep the 34 or sell her and get something a lil more practical.  :-\

Does $550 sounds good for a PBR clutch fully installed? Haven't heard of them doing clutches but I assume it should be decent :)? What do you guys think?

PBR are fairly OEM spec. Is that for a standard or heavy duty?

I don't think much companies do HD clutches for U13. Hence, I'll probably go OEM but with a heavier plate, given that U13 has a hydraulic clutch, it should be able to handle it and my foot should not be sore too.  ;D

Since the car hasn't got much work done, the above mention clutch combo should grip pretty well, any comments on that? Thanks. :)

Pity the group buy didn't go well, mechanic is wanting 470 for the RPM clutch (HD) and 389 for the OEM ones.

No offence but I'm not quite sure how good or lasting the clutch is...... I don't believe that manufacture the whole clutch. They probably gets various parts from different manufacturers.

I did some research and from the number of mechanics using Exedy/Daikin clutches, I'm kind of leaning towards Daikin (Exedy) clutches as the various parts that make up the clutch seems to be from Japan (Exedy/Daikin itself). If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. It's better to be wrong now than the next 20000km on the wrong clutch.  :P

AFAIK they make the clutches there. I had a clutch custom built from them. The only thing that might not be "their" part would be the throw out bearing.

And Noss has been running one of their clutches for a very long time with no issues at all.
