My Bluey Drowned in flood
« on: Jun 11, 2007, 12:39PM »
Hey Guys.  Massive floods here in Newcastle over the weekend.  Anyways, there was some pretty deep water around when I was trying to drive home.  Did alright, the Bluebird was driving through water which had Falcons and magnas etc drowned.

Then a truck sped past me and washed me into some fairly deep water.  Bout 30cm below the mirrors.  The interior of course began to flood and the water was < 1 degree.  Guy in a 4wd offered me a tow so I swam under the front end hooked up a tow cable and got her out of there.

problem is that water got sucked into the engine through the exhaust definitely and possibly through the Air filter.  Spent yesterday on the side of the highway.  Changed the oil twice, drilled some holes in the exhaust, and got it running.  Got some oil coloured oil again (instead of chocolate milk) and the water which had been sitting on one of the pistons during some test startups is now gone.  managed to drive it home but it has a ticking noise which increases in speed as the engine revs up, dad thinks it's a tappet.  Also the car lost power a few times on my way home.  And the interior is pretty wet (read soaked from the the top of the seat where my ass is to the floor).  And I'm not that mechanically adept.

I might be able to claim on insurance but I don't want to lose my no claim bonus or spend $900 for excess or lose my beloved Bluebird.  What do people think?  Can it be fixed?  For how much do we think?  What do I need to do?  Anyone around Newcastle willing to lend a hand?

Well I'm going out to change my filters and oil (again)

I would be claiming on insurance... the car would be wrecked, I mean the interior must stink.

Electrics will be shot (in parts) and has been full of water!

take all spark plugs out and crank.
that should get water out of block
Your looking at electrics which are shot.
if there is water up to the seat bottome then your ECU has spent the night in water

I agree with these guys. Call your insurance company straight away!!!!
The engine ticking could be a number of nasty things, and bluebirds don't have 'tappets' as such, so tappet noise isn't a possibility. It may be noise from the hydraulic lifters on the valves, But....
If your engine sucked in water like you think it did, you may be staring down the barrel at rooted big end bearings / small end bearings / pistons. Water doesn't compress in the cylinders, so something has to give. Either way it will probably be a very expensive repair....
Sorry to hear this news about your car anyway mate. Not a nice situation to be in but i guess you can't really blame anyone. No-one has control over mother nature...

Well, that's pretty much what I came up with after spending yesterday trying to get her going again.  Looks like it's a futile venture.  Hopefully my insurance company will write her off.  Sure am going to miss it.

Looks like i'll get about $5000 back if they do, and with my wedding this year I think that's about all I'll be able to spend.  Any suggestions guys?

If you read brent's thread, you'll see he figured that one out yesterday  :P  or were you just trying to push the sale along?

Abaddon, I think you should buy a red TRX and put gold wheels on it just to make jecks jellous.

At least you've got wheels mate.
Don't knock the little Mazda. They are great cars and are almost completely bullet proof if looked after.
Is it a manual? If so, they go really really well! Great little cars.

Certainly am not knocking the Mazda.  I absolutely love the car, was going to get one before I got the Bluey (Price killed it last time around).  It's been given some testing already and it certainly goes, put it up against a Wollongong local on their ocean road the other week, they were driving a Subaru WRx and i kept up with them just fine.  Mazda handles brilliantly.  I certainly won't miss the body roll in the old Bluey lol
