Better than a front mount inter-cooler!
« on: Mar 17, 2007, 09:29PM »
Ok so i have been looking at various ways to cool my z32 300zx, given that it has VARY limited engine bay space and i want max (cold) airflow still going to the radiator, a big FMIC is out of the question, so i found my way towards looking at the Water - Air IC.

At the moment with the limited number of options for cooling this looks perfect for my car. Also they are supposed to be more efficient, produce less turbo lagg, and be lighter than a air to air IC, the only real problem is that the price is about twice as much for a Water to air IC kit, than for and air to air FMIC.

But i guess thats the price i'm gonna have to pay to keep my car happy, oh well, heres some info for you guys...

Any PWR supplier should have them. Or can order them.

Guys like,

Rocket industries (www.rocket.com.au)

or

VPW (www.vpw.com.au)

They have them. Or performance engine suppliers like Roccos Performance, Race Solutions, or Advan Performance etc should be able to get them.

Check here for a rough guide for prices

pull a water cooler off a subaru? think the liberties use them dont they?  although the one in that link did look pretty sweet... but so much more expensive than I would have thought.

Someone mentioned just buying the barrel and connecting your own radiator to it, sounded like a good idea, and cheaper too.

The problem with air/water intercoolers from celicas or subarus is that

1) they are very small....
2) They are always top mounted
3) They have convoluted shapes, with complex ducting and piping
4) They usually arent very efficient
5) They are rare....
6) Which means they are expensive.

:P

I just read in an Autospeed article that the Subie Liberty coolers are good for 210kw at the flywheel.

The stock cooler on my wrx is good for 160kw atw and its a P.O.S theirs a reason why subaru didnt continue with the air to water cause their not that great.

And why they have been using water spray setups for a while now... instead of switching to an EVO style FMIC design.

I wouldnt say that. Id dare say its due mainly to its complicated and expensive design. Plus, its high maintenence, and prone to much more problems than a standard Air-Air coolers.

We all should know by now companies dont do anything purely because its the best design. They do things because they are the cheapest.

water spray makes a decent difference, i'd say they leave them top mount due to the fact there is less lag to begin with and the STI's use water spray i think.. they might have a bigger core IC too, im not sure.

Yeah, i agree Jono...
Water to Air intercoolers definately have their advantages. The best thing is that they can provide a very stable and consistent inlet temperature, unlike a top mount which when sitting in traffic acts like more of an inter-heater than an inter-cooler!

They are cheap, easy to setup on cars that are generally designed in N/A form and turbo...

But yes, they suck total ass.  Especially with integral bonnet ducting.  I'm checked out the mazda setups up close, they aren't too bad due all the sheilding and large size of the TMIC.
