go to a TV repair shop and ask to have a socket soldered in...
I'm sick of my knob going all floppy and loose in my hand  :P
I've been on probation for 21 years, can't make a decision without consulting the wife first  ::)

Agree with jecks, TV repair shop is your friend here, get a socket in. If the last one didn't want to touch it, try another. If you don't want to, then pay the $170 and go to whatever shop quoted you.

Not sure where you're coming from with the shops 'bullshiting' you about how it's going to change your fuel, because that's the purpose of the chip.

Is it SMC or discreet?

the circuit board is triple layer, its a 28 pin eprom mounted in a through-hole method. the chip is essentially glued to the board with waterproofing lacquer.

the only way i have seen this done by anyone i have ever had an ecu chipped by without damaging the board is to cut the legs of the stock chip and desolder the legs individually.

No special tools required then. If you have a decent variable temp soldering iron you should be in business with a little experience. In the right hands it can be sone with your average iron too but you gotta be quick. What you said is the go if the old chip is scarificial. cut legs and remove one at a time. Otherwise a solder sucker and copper braid primed with flux will get the old one out in one piece.

90% of the laquors are designed to break down with isopropanol alcohol or acetone, can get it from local chemest. Tandy will sell the laquor and its a good idea to replace it after the job is finished. It provides vibration damping and environmental resistance. I don't understand why any decent lecky wouldn't have a go at it? They must be minders.

If it was SMC it would be a dif story, You need special tools and techniques to properly mount SMC.

If you ever find yourself comming through nowra i could more then likely solder it in for you. would have to look at the job first so no 100% guarentees, depends on risk. but i have an aerospace multi level circuit repair cert so you could say i know how to wave a soldering iron. Plus my own solder lab in the study.
I could do it for say..... a 6 pack of highland scotch n' coke, soldering makes me thirsty =P
Just make sure you bring an IC socket to suit if you want the chip removable and it's safer for the chip and faster to solder in. but not necessary. can pick these up for cheaps at your local J Car
