new engine
« on: Oct 23, 2008, 06:50PM »
Gday..

my u13's KA engine has suffered a bit of damage and now my mechanic reckons i need a new one. However im not entirely sure what i can put in. Im a green P plater so turbos are out of the question for now and ive heard that sr20's go pretty good. My maximum budget is about 5k (labour included) and the worst part is that its an automatic. But i so badly want to convert it to a manual. Ive heard thats pretty pricey too. I dont want to get another bluebird or another car.. so what should i do? and can anyone help me :(?? ??? ??? :'( :'(

For a fair bit less than $5K you would surely be able to pay a mechanic to source you a good condition second hand engine and gearbox and do the manual conversion for you.
But for $5K, you would also be able to go and buy another manual U13 SSS in reasonable condition..... Then use your old car to swap over all the good / better bits and make 1 good car out of the 2.
decisions, decisions.....

mm true true. But im just really attached to my one u know? And do u know any specific engines i could get put in on an auto and their prices. Because i have no idea where to look and my dad might just drop in the KA24 again. Im really keen on putting in an sr20de but can the auto transmission handle it? what else would i have to change?

Out of curiosity why the SR?? Not having a go just wanting to know. I don't think the Auto will have problems with a NA SR20DE as the Auto Boxes seem to hold up with the KA well... I would personally save up and manual/KA it but that's me... :)
Ill fight you. May even throw a bar of soap your way. Maybe a few wax strips and some clip on brembo brake calipers for your fooly sic civic.

I agree with getting another KA... or even reco your existing.
You'll get out of there for about $2k-3K no probs.
No point in going for an SR unless you get the turbo model... otherwise you are just going backwards in power.

Why touch the SR20DE?

KA24DE makes more power and more torque...

what?? the Ka is better? thats so weird... im so confused now. I was under the impression that the sr would be much better in terms of performance and reliability? can i put turbos on the ka's? man im so noob. So if i just reco'd my KA what other  modifications could i do for it?

check out this forum on KA24DE vs SR20DE    http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?t=1645    im pretty confused

it's pretty simple maths mate.

2.4L > 2.0L

So if i just reco'd my KA what other  modifications could i do for it?

simply put... every mod an sr20 can take (though obviously not the exact same part). There's quite a few turbo KA's getting around these days.

unless you are planning on making it a track car, the KA is cheaper and just as effective on the road. (and probably better on fuel 'cause you won't be revving the tits off it all the time)

Both have pros and cons.  Search, it has been covered before. Try also kat-t.org and look at the crazy 240sxs and Altimas they have.

240sx is just an 180sx and 200sx with KA24E/DEs and Altimas are basically Bluebirds.

i see i see. No im not looking for a track car lol. I think ill stick with the KA because apparently it can handle a lot of boost and its pretty tough (like a truck engine?). Man i didnt realise the KA vs SR20 debate was so huge. jeez. So in the next couple of days im gettin a new KA dropped in. Ive heard theres a Greddy kit for it, is that true? oh and what are some basic  things i could do to maintain my engine (besides changing the oil and stuff like that)?  and the guy rekns he can fit in a new ka plus labour for about 640. Is that too expensive or just about right?

New or low km used? The Greddy kit maybe for the 240sx so being RWD, the manifold may not fit.

If you want a near bolt on, Altima kits are the way as they should be near bolt on.

Proper oil changes, plugs/leads etc will help maintain the engine. Mods wise, search as a few of the U13 Boys have exhausts and other goodies. :)

the greddy kit wont fit. For a turbo kit have a look on ka-t.org theres generally parts and altimas being parted out so you can get a KA24 turbo kit already made up.

My suspension costs bout $1200, from memory. thats coz i got parts frieghted form USA. which i love. If you buy in australia then the price is considerable less. Also depending on how much and far you go, ie; new shocks+coils+swaybars+endlinks

Mod wise all i have is suspension and to the engine is a CAI filter setup. Lookin into exhaust or something else if im keeping the car.

right i see i see. And so is there any particular difference with the US parts or is it just preference? Would a manual conversion be costly?

www.ebay.com

search ka24de altima...

there are manifolds/turbs/waist-gates, intercooler kits, injectors, pistons etc etc and they will all bolt onto the u13 as the earlier altimas are blueys

yea, i know where theres cheap KA's im sure ive mentioned here somewhere before! anyway turbo manifold... this is what im getting and im pritty sure that bloke whos building the turbo de ti has this maifold too

if you want something bigger then a t25 t28 (there pritty tiny, standard sr20det turbs) you can always get the a new plate to suite which ever turbo you want to put on and im sure an exhaust joint would be able to do it!
