Leaglities of removing 'cornering light' on U12 >:)
« on: Aug 10, 2006, 03:31PM »
Hi again,

is it legal to remove the passenger side cornering light ? (i think its what they are called)

(_[____\=====/____]_)  <-----this one!

Is it required by law to have them? (I am conjuring up a creative/evil intake port, hopefully completed by the dyno day...)

I could make the headlights work fine ( low/high beam) and the foggies ( with blue AND normal globes in them)

so yeh..... any answers will be greatly appriciated

Thanks guys...

well... i guess it depends wat you're doing... if you leave it open and exposed, its probably not illegal so much as it is hazardous (having things fly into your engine bay).

the cornering light doesn't really do anything, because its the indicators which indicate that you're turning.

but ultimately, a cop may defect you because he feels like being a bastard, and saying its hazardous.

but if you shape something to replace the cornering light, that doesn't leave your bay exposed, like a grill or something.. then i can't see why it'd be a problem... and cops probably wouldn't be able to tell if it looks stock enough

I agree.... they are not legally required by Australian design regulations.  So you do not need them to function, or even be in place.  If you make a mould/scoup of some sort to keep the general shape then I see no problem with it.

However i personally find them very useful to light up around corners, our head lights are terrible for peripheral light.

mmm.... thought so.

thanks colby and stu!

Im prob making the light removeable, as well as the 'grille'. so i am able to swap them around easily  if needed, i.e. driving on dark windy roads
so i will keep the light/grille in the boot or something....

or making the grille  with a driving light integrated  into half of it
like this----> [oEE/

 or---> [EEo/

 (E is grille, 0 is driving light)

i hope it works out well!

thanks for the replys dudes!

i like where you're going with the conversion into an intake :)  very sensible, if i can picture wat you're thinking.

but i'm a big fan of symmetry.  don't have one as a grill, the other as a cornering light.  even if the drivers side is non functional, at least make it look similar :)

symmetry, i understand.....

it could work useing both as air intakes, with the drivers side used for cooling the engine bay....

i will make 1 just to see if it can be done... if not realy feasable then i'll just return it to stock, maybe even tint it or something....

this feels like it could work pretty well.....

i recently went for a drive without my grill/bumper/ headlights/cornering lights just to see what it was like when i had them all off and it suprisingly made a big difference to performance with the cold air on the pod and the lighter weight :P was fun really

I thought it was a parking light, not a cornering light, and I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have them...

I may be wrong, however.
Current mods:
ANTRX.com KA24E Stage 2 ECU chip (5kW)
ANTRX.com sticker (30kW) ;D

... that's about all.

On my U13 the light that you are talking about does both. It has a dual filament globe - one for the parking light, the other for the corner lamp.
If your U12 is the same, i'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to legally remove your parking light.

The intake idea using the cornering light has been done... in a very ugly way by the japs.

See these pics I found many moons ago.

EWWWW... that is an ugly way!  Definately more streamlined would be an aim.

You can remove it, but you will have to place a parking light on the front corners of your car some how... weather it be a globe in the main lights like the nissan U12's or some other method such as in front bar like 80's pulsars.
Coarsairs have the lights acting as parkers from memory, but its such a dicky little hole that you wouldnt get much air anyway.

it would be a neato place to mount a camera for track days or a touge chase vehicle..

in any case, if you do the drivers side, i'd recommend just making it a cool air vent.  can't hurt.
