Title: Strong Gearboxes
Post by: nissanman on May 16, 2004, 06:41PM
Hey guyz,
Ive got a S12 Silvia/Gazelle, with a CA20E Manuel,
I got the Massive manuel for it the other day , and it says that S12'z have the one gearbox for all of the engines,
Eg, FJ20ET, CA18ET, CA18DET, CA20E.
Now that means that the CA20E RWD gearbox must be pretty damn strong! As it has to take the power of the FJ20ET and CA18ET!

What Diff's do R31 Pintara's come with?
S12'z are suppose to come with a R200 (found in all S13-S15, skylines RWD Skylines etc)
or a H190. Or a R180.
Do u guyz have any of these diff's or are u z runnin diferent ones, as S12'z are an import??

the r31 pintara has the borg warner m78 series
the ratio is 4.111:1

r31 skyline and vl drivers use the pintara dif for better acceleration.

the ca18et isnt exactly powerful, it only makes 100kw stock. but the fj20 turbo has pretty decent power.

u could modify a ba falcon 9inch lock diff and put it in a r31. that would be mad

Except that the BA doesn't come with a 9" Diff, its something like a Dana M62 special import from the states. Thats on the sedans, the utes still run a Borg-Warner because they have a live rear-axle.

You can get kits with "Any Legnth Axles and any Wheel Stud Spacings" but they very expensive, I think around $1,000 for an open 9" with common axle and studs.

I don't think the Falcon has run a 9" since 1985 at the latest, when they phased out the V8's on the XE, though it was probably earlier.

As a side note, does any body know if they're is an "off the shelf" Nissan RWD box that will fit (and take the torque of) a KA24, to make it RWD obviously, or would you need to stuff around with specials bell housings etc?

meh just throw in a hilux diff. Its just a rebadged for 9 incher yet cheaper.

There is meant to be a guy who can fit basically any diff into any car for alot of money in adelaide. might look into it abit more.

btw with  the gearbox. Just get the stock gearbox and strengthen it. i.e. larger cogs stronger syncros etc. I had it done to my gearbox and it hasnt skipped abeat

browny how much did it cost to strengthen your box? is this the first box u havent broken? wouldnt somethin like a VL turbo box be cheaper than strengthening (if it actually fits)

hmm all up i payed 600 bucks to get it strengthened but thats also because the box was blown. before my gearboxes last year i blew a few gearboxes so i had this one strengthened in december and it hasnt slipped abit and i drive harder now. Example i blew a r31 stock gearbox in 3 weeks through just giving it shit (alot of hills runs) and i dirve like that now and i have had this gearbox nearly 6 months

600 bucks! thats cheap isnt it? i need new bearing plus got chipped of tooths. Does 600 include labour for strengthening, or labour of putting gearbox out and in? If its only 600 bucks i is doing that i was thinking like 2000 for new gearbox+labour+clutch.

hmm cltuch not included i took out and put the gearbox in myself. I just took the gearbox in the back of the 4wd and the guy did it all. took about 2 days for him to finish then i payed him 600 (i think it was 670 actually) and got the bearbox and put it back in my car

i am getting that done after suspension for sure. My mechanic said it would cost 600-700 for a secondhand non-reconditioned stock box stuff that. 670 is quite reasonable even if i have to pay a bit more for bearings and some labour.

S13's have a r200 diff.
There is a guy in nz running a datto 1600 with fj20 turbo power and he has a r180 centre out of the rear in a u12 awd sr20det - He also has a 10 second s12 fj20et with stock internals and suspension :D

the r200 diffs are the most common diff to put in a datto if ur engien has got good power.

They are hard to blow.

isnt r200 lsd and r180 single spinner?

also the only R31s that came with R180/200 are the two door coupes and import passages(4door pillarless) coz theyre IRS equipped.
