HUD!
« on: Sep 12, 2005, 06:16PM »
When I chose to by a Bluebird and get rid of my old car (91 Camry, yuck) I really wanted the HUD feature. Unfortunately at the time, I could not find a decent U13 AUS SSS in Queensland :(
I'd love to install a HUD in my Bluebird, then i'd probably end up keeping it longer. Now from what i've heard, you can't rip the HUD out of a SSS and install it in a HUDless model but i'm wondering why (or if you can infact do it sucessfully).
I"ve heard that if your HUD dies or windscreen breaks, then it's pretty costly to fix but i've heard mention of aftermarket solutions.
If anyone has any info to add about the U13 HUD, that'd be great.
Cheers

I found some info on another forum, apparently to install the HUD you need the display unit and windshield, you need the HUD control module, harness, and gauge cluster.
I'm wondering why you would need the entire windscreen, why can't you just peel off the sticker and stick it on your current windscreen?

I dont know what you need to go thru to have a HUD but as for the windscreen bit, no you dont need the whole thing.
Just get some mirror tint, cut out a small square, stick it to the inside of the window and you have a display for the HUD.
But if you wanna buy the windscreen they cost around $1300, mine got replaced and the guy told me how much the insurance had to pay.

Yeah, I heard on another forum about installing a HUD in a non HUD model U13 and the guy sucessfully did it and he said he didn't even need the sticker (but it was a bit lighter than normal).
Here's the thread by the guy that successfully did it...

If I can get the HUD parts cheaply, i'd be very tempted to do it.
Anyone willing to give me a hand?
Cheers.

Cheers mate.
I've PMed the guy that did it asking for a more comprehensive guide (if he has one).
If he does, i'll check the prices wreckers are asking for all the parts I need.

Seen the HUD unit for about 200 bucks (about 1 year plus ago).  May know a wreckers who may have the part.  (will do a quick check for you)

He has warned me that it is prone to failure so it was not really recommended.  (which was the main reason why I didnt bother at the end cos I wanted one initally)

Anyway will let you know how I go (the search for the unit).

chaserone: Decided to get a Defi VSD Basic HUD, better than the stock SSS HUD in my opinion, and only $278 including freight brand new :)
