Been on a while so

David Hitch   Australian living in the uk
1991 bluebird sss manual
sr20det  standard
Surprisingly slow compared to the other cars that I have and also impossible to get parts for or insured on here in the uk
also hard to get things like window switches on the net mainly due to being mucked around unlike getting parts for other cars.

Oh, I have one of these now as well!

Budgie, Vic Australia
1997 Bluebird SSS (5spd)
KA24DE stock as a rock, 118,500km

Car is 100% factory, stock radio, etc etc.  Been smooth as silk since I got it, no issues other than a leaking taillight filling the boot with water.  Great car to drive and got enough get up and go for me.  My daily drive :)  Always returns under 8 litres to 100km as well, most of the time 7.5 or less :)

just search nissan altima 93. However keep in mind that these headlights are configured to be used in nissan altimas which is the american version of the nissan bluebird. Just take them to your autoelectrician and they can rewire your headlights so they fit :D  CHEERS !!!!

Hi, I'm new here and I like Nissans, am I at the right place?

So, I'm finally out of my last ride and into my new ride, my much loved Attesa.
Introduction:

Name: Matt
Car: 1991 Bluebird U13 SSS Attesa
Colour: Dark Green
Trans: Manual
Owned Since: March 2011
KM: 190km
Occupation: Market Researcher
ASL: 29 / M / Adelaide
Mods: Yeah, she be stock. Know her last 7year history personally - no mods, just maintenance. Previous history - No idea, she was still in Japan... looks stock as though in every regard, minus the kimono. She makes a good cup of coffee... spill all down your front. Am yet to name her. She needs a little TLC and I'm just the bowerbird.
Mods to come: First - tend to anything that isn't working correctly like the tacho amongst other things.
Then:
 - I always like to know that I can stop before I get the get go - so a brake upgrade is in order.
 - Upgrade security system coz when I'm done you'd be stupid not to want it.
 - Suspension & sway bars.
 - Cooling system & air intake.
 - Mandrel bent exhaust & strut brace.
 - Upgrade turbo & gauges (tastefully), and anything else you need to do at this time.
 - Wheels and tyres.
 - cosmetics such as window tinting, fluffy dice(Nawt!) etc.
 - paint job eventually(not a priority).

Of course any suggestions on any, or all of these proposed upgrade/mods would be appreciated as I am keen to expand my knowledge of all things SSS Attesa, as sadly I am a noob!

Respect,
Matt

Name: Richard
Car: 1991 Bluebird U13 SSS Attesa
Colour: Metallic charcoal
Trans: Manual
Extras: Factory electric sunroof. No HUD
Owned for a couple of years
ASL:34/M/Dandenong, Melbourne

Mods:
Tinted windows, boost guage
Hi-flowed stock turbo, larger compressor wheel, 15psi
EMS Dual Sport ECU, standalone, I think. Maps, no AFM, XF Ghia idle control
TX5 intercooler
CES Racing ceramic coated twin dump pipe, 3” exhaust all the way, good cat
GFB atomic boost controller
Hi-flowed injectors
K&N pod filter, custom piping, isolated in engine bay
Malpassi regulator, Walbro in-tank pump, oil catch can
Sports suspension, rear sway bar, camber kit
Exeddy HD Clutch
Alpine head unit, mb Quart splits, Pioneer 69's. Amps n Subs plug n play in boot.

Future mods:
Turbo: Something like a 2871 with external actuator but actually designed for the housing it's in, like the equivalent billet turbo.
ECU: maybe go Nistune, if current set-up piggy-backing. If not, maybe go all out on a standalone. EMS, if it saves wiring hassles.
Cams: wouldn't mind getting a custom grind based on all my mods. Otherwise HKS, Tomei or JWT drop-ins.
Brakes: biggest possible.
Gearbox: maybe something from a skyline. A PPG job would be nice, but then again, so would a Tomei Genesis/Derive complete engine.
Suspension: Lowrider/Hydraulic adjustable. strut brace.
Body:Bi-Xenon headlights, maybe rear suicide doors for something different. Remove spoiler?
Tyres: Hi-performance wet weather tyres.
And maybe a low-HP NOS kit.
Media: Double DIN navigation/entertainment centre. Eclipse, Kenwood. And SQ speaker set-up.
Paint: If i had to, would prob go a shade of non-metallic grey, high gloss. like on some lambos.
Interior: Um, baby blue velour/suede, thick carpets, sound deadening. Steering wheel, gearknob.
Greddy Intake plenum?
Tow bar.

lol my RB26DETT transplant sits longitudinally...

but seriously, it seems that my correspondent at PPG is as familiar with my car as i am. i'm passing him the buck anyway. perhaps he is talking about the internals?

basically, he was recommending looking at skyline gearboxes as a cheaper alternative to PPG/PAR sets as a next-step-up strengthening mod.

not sure if this idea is worthy of it's own thread as i have not heard anyone else mention this, nor read about it online.

so far, my research in this department has peaked at "SR20DET ATTESA 'boxes are model no. 50A" and "Nissan doesn't over-engineer their gearboxes so large power increases may cause the box to be labeled 'Achilles heel' ".

so when this 'skyline box' spanner is thrown in the works by a gearbox professional, i don't even think about the logistics, just start dreaming about how one day i can advertise the car as having a GTR gearbox!

Luke thanks for pinching me, but please tell me it's not just a dream!

My best advice is:

One day you will come to realise your driving around in a 20 year old Nissan that was never designed to be fast. I Strongly suggest you don't waste your money on it. 15 years ago, these cars would have been a cool project, not any more.

Yeh. Hate to say it but I'm with Luke. I've got the PAR gearset. And while it is freaking awesome, I'm at a stage now where I kind of regret spending the cash on it.

That being said if I was loaded and not a struggling 22 year old student I would probably go crazy on it and make it a track car.

As for the 'skyline box' I can't see that ever working. While it's still the attesa system it's a totally different setup. It may be easier to say you have a pulsar GTiR (which uses the same gearbox as the u13) as most people are a lot more familiar with them.

Thanks Luke and JelloBello

Yes, true, no car should be over-invested in, even though this model is rare and quirky.

And the gearbox, yeah, the bluebirds have a 'fwd-based' 4wd system as far as i know. shame there are no common or easy 'in-between' stages as far as gearbox improvements are concerned. I wonder if people sell second-hand PAR/PPG gearsets/boxes... might be the solution.

Before I stop over-investing in the ATTESA, I really want to see what it's like with a nice turbo and ECU. But I can tell that could be dangerous, when I see products from DTAfast that would make me want to take full advantage of all features, thus further investing in crazy things like a row of secondary injectors etc.

I think your missing the point. Why the hell would you need a second row of injectors? If you want a quick bluebird, buy mine... I'll save you the trouble of finding out the hard way.

These cars have a very limited potential. Everything needs to upgraded on them. Have a look at Evo's and STi's. They have all the suspension and brake setups on them, and their engines and gearboxes can take the punishment. If you want something different that is actually a high performance car... have a look at the Mazda MPS cars... lots of potential.

i like the sr20DET's reported potential and that of turbo cars in general.
the ABS, traction control and 4wd of the attesa give the impression of control, safety and 'harness-ability', further enhancing 'potential' appeal.

if i did ever have the money and necessity to purchase a newer car, then given my likes, the evo X might be a goer, but so might a nissan juke. normally, there would be a slight bit of shame in going the direction of the evo/sti (for a number of reasons), however i love that 'galant' look, which looks best on vr4/legnum: another car i would go for before going brand new. the legnum especially, as i can sleep in the back if i'm in the city and intoxicated or tired.

the attesa has everything i need, plus a conservative guise. it's certainly fast enough (but hey, who doesn't like a bit of extra g-force?).
i'm using it to learn about about cars and engines - come from a family of mechanics and engineers and still don't even do my own oil changes, yet day dreams of the ultimate rebuild get me through the day.

the mazda mps is awesome. i am keeping a lookout for newer cars in the 4 cyl turbo category. for a while i thought the configuration was becoming obsolete or unappealing to manufacturers, and that vvt and electricity were taking over. until the golf r arrived.

still, for less money, i can experience the x-trail gt. it might be getting old, it might be expensive to repair, but 'sr20vet' just sounds like fun. and again, in a weird or unlikely body.

for now it's attesa ftw. maybe an x-trail gt next. and, i'm sure that by the time i can afford a new car, there will be so many amazing options available. there already are and they're only gonna get better. i have the meanwhile to catch up with technology by practicing on the outdated type. the potential of my car and any other car have the exact same limit on potential at the moment, that being my funds!

a turbo here and a cam there are relatively small outlays requiring no loans so for now, i'll be continuing to spread the gospels of 'don't judge a book' and 'it's what's on the inside that counts', in my granny-mobile!

one question: if everything DOES get upgraded on one of these, doesn't that make it kind of like a new, improved car? extending the lifespan and lowering its rate of deterioration? especially given that there is no current intention of ever selling the vehicle

Hi
Mine is a '94 SSS SR20det Blacktop Attesa. I've invested in upgrades over the past 2yrs and it had its first car show entry last weekend. It's also being showed in Street Car Magazine.

I upgraded the turbo to a G28, along with other mechanical upgrades. A new paint job. It still has the original ECU which was recently re-tuned to stream-line performance. It goes like a shower-of-shit. They are eye-candy cars, lots of fun and very rewarding.

Enjoy your new Attesa.  :)

Well done.  You should have said something, i would have gone for a look, although i did not remember until the Sunday arvo that it was on.  You know you will have to show some pics now.  Who did you end up getting to work on it?

Hi Bruce

I haven't been on here for a long time. The car show was quiet compared to Ingham in the past years.

All the mods and paint etc were done by John...All Paint & Body Kit Solutions.

I'd add some pics but can't remember how to do that here.

Cheers

Hey Luke....limited potential?

Yeah okay, manual gearbox sus. Mine's auto. Same trans as behind RB25. Strong as! 2500stall. Rest of mods make them go. Don't cost much, but mine's been dumped 2" with larger dia coils, big front/rear bars. As far as stop-power....slotted rotors all round with bendix comp pads. Corners and stops as well as goes. 13sec flat. STI & Evo...hmmmm   :)
