Manual gearbox conversion
« on: Dec 13, 2003, 12:12PM »
Hi everyone...

finally, finally...it has happened. I have found a TRX in Adelaide! Only problem is its a auto. Now here is the thing. The guy I might be buying it from is in a jap import business and he reckons he can get a Pintara manual gearbox and convert it for me. Cost is not an issue as the buying price and the price he is offering for the gearbox sound pretty reasonable.

More to the point HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THIS BEFORE? I;m hoping someone has so that they can tell me if they had any further problems with it or no.

If noone has done it....what do you guys reckon? Is it worthwhile....because the rest of the car is extremely nice, rest of the engine looks okay and the body is good, just a few bulbs have blown in the lights.

I'd really like to get it done because its the first TRX that i have seen for sale in 3 months or so....

Thanks

Chadza

What are they asking for the conversion/buying price? Evenflow would be the man to ask for performance in regards to auto equipped TRX's, 99% of us are manual.
I think it would be beneficial to swap to a LSD TRX box.

Good price actually...find out if it is a LSD box he is installing, and make sure you get a good stong clutch.

Anyone else have any input regarding this? (thanks for the help sss),
What is peoples general thoughts on whether this is sensible or not, or if I should just wait for a manual to come along?

I'm taking it for a test drive tomorow morning so I will talk to the guy about those things you mentioned sss.

Took it for a drive this morning, and couldn't fault it. I spoke to the guy about the manual arrangements and he said he would get me a TRX box with LSD.....it might be next year though because he hasn't had time to look for one yet (and people are on holidays).

I'm taking it for a morning tomorrow (in the 39 degree heat..should be a good test), then it has to be registered and detailed and then I will have an auto gunmetal grey TRX!!  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for your input noss and sss, I drove it this morning and it went perfectly, the car scrubbed up really well after a clean inside and out from the owner and he said today that he will get a TRX manual with LSD gearbox. At this stage I am going to get a new clutch for him to install it with the gearbox labour free.

So.....tomorrow morning I'll be visiting my furutre car again for another test drive and then at the end of that I will put down a deposit on it!!  ;D ;D

It still needs rego-ing and a few bulbs replaced here and there, not to mention a good engine detailing.

future mods (sort of) already planned......!
antrx sticker,
heat shield for the pod..then in a few months I'll go the whole cai hog.
resprayed front bumber (lots of stone chips)
stock TRX rims (atm it has bluebird ones)
and FANC's steering wheel! (sorry not the mags though!)

Thanks again guys, I'll have some pics up when I get it in a week or two maybe,

Yep..I am going to do that AS SOON AS I FIND A TRX GEARBOX! I've just gotten home and rung every wrecker in adelaide almost and they have KA24 gearboxes but not TRX LSD ones :'(

So it will be an auto for a while before I can find a gearbox! If there is anyone out there who wants to sell their manual box.....I'll HAVE IT PLEASE!

Anyway, I put a deposit on it this morning and will get it on Friday....yayyy  ;D

Yeah...he was but he changed that this morning, he knocked a bit off the price so that I could get my own.....he's a genuine guy I think, he's still going to install it for next to nothing I just have to find one....I have rung around to some contacts he suggested AND MORE and there just isn't one in Adelaide I don't think.

I'm happy enough to have it Auto for a while....just have to wait for a gearbox to pop up.

If it has U13 Bluebird 5 spoke rims, keep them. they are 15" whereas the TRX rims are only 14".

Hey guys....got it yesterday! And after a morning of fixing the damn thing up it looks great.....I had to get some putty stuff to cover over a radiator crack at the top that was weeping fluid....when I got her home yesterday my poor baby had hardly any fluid left in her....also the bracing for the pod filter had broken so it was just resting on whatever was below it....now thats fixed some more air can get to the engine.....now I just have to take it to get a big service and a replaced timing belt.

Re the wheels....yeah I just realised today that they are U13 ones...15 inches sure do look nice on the TRX! Especially cause they are a dull chrome they suit the gunmetal grey of the TRX.....I just need to get matching tyres for em now, would you believe out of 5 tyres I have 4 different types of rubber!!! Only the back two are the same. The front two are fine but they are different size...one is a 205/55 and the other is a 195/60.....so I will have to get em the same or this will stuff my steering or alignment or something won't it?

Anyway, I haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face that the Grey TRX outside my house IS MINE!!

Okay time to answer some questions....yes it is my local mechanic who kinda knows my uncle so that might have something to do with it...he does own an RAA approved workshop though so its not like he's doin it in his back shed or something!

The car has just ticked over 203000 and I asked the guy if he knew when it was last replaced....it had been in his family for a bit over two and a half years and they hadn't done it. Seeing how they recommend every 100000 to be replaced I am doing it just to be sure.

The tension of the chain is adjusted via oil pressure chucky, picture this, one side of the chain guide is fixed (the straight guide), the other is allowed to pivot at the crankshaft end (the curved guide).

Chadza, when you get it done, MAKE SURE that your mechanic changes ALL the timing gear, the tensioner, both guides and their bolts, not to mention the chain. All these parts have to be bought as OEM equipment from Nissan.

Not to rain on your parade or anything beefy, but apart from costing more i don't see how they'd be any better then the parts currently available from Nissan. The tensioner maybe set for slighty higher pressure....
